They face difficulties in recognizing English words, phrases, pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence complexity, compounded by the rapid speech rate of native speakers. Addressing these challenges, this study explores the use of digital materials that require students to analyse, evaluate and make informed judgments based on listening content, thereby nurturing higher order thinking skills. A qualitative case study was conducted, involving the collection of comprehensive data from course syllabi, lecturers and students. A total of sixty-one university students enrolled intermediate listening course, along with two listening lecturers, were actively engaged to enrich the data. The results shows that the use of digital materials, particularly the e-module, has proven to be effective. Students’ responses indicate that the e-module effectively facilitates critical thinking, improves reflective ability, and encourages motivation. Moreover, the e-module features, including well-defined learning outcomes, authentic materials, scaffolded learning activities, engaging multimedia elements, collaborative features, and opportunities for reflection and self-assessment, collectively contribute to foster critical thinking skills and motivation among students

Abstracts are essential components of academic research articles, providing a concise summary of the study's purpose, methods, results, and conclusions. This qualitative evidence synthesis examines the quality, structure, and content of abstracts in the fields of English Language Teaching (ELT) and Literature. A systematic search of relevant databases identified 15 peer-reviewed articles published in English with a focus on abstract writing. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the studies for their research findings, methodologies, and recommendations related to abstract writing. The findings reveal that abstracts tend to be descriptive, with a focus on presenting the research problem, methodology, and main findings. However, there is a lack of consistency in structure and content across journals, and the quality of abstracts varies widely. Based on the analysis, several key recommendations for improving abstract writing in ELT and Literature journals are proposed, including greater consistency and standardization across journals, and improved training for authors and reviewers. This qualitative evidence synthesis offers a thorough overview of the body of knowledge on the subject of writing effective abstracts for ELT and literature journals and makes suggestions for further study and practice in this field. The study highlights the need for greater attention to abstract writing quality, structure, and content, and provides practical recommendations for improving the quality of abstracts in ELT and Literature research articles using thematic analysis as a data analysis technique

    Get PDF
The adoption of the 2022 Emancipated Curriculum in Indonesia has prompted a need for pre-service English teachers to acquire new skill sets. These skill sets entail the integration of technology and pedagogy, aligning with UNESCO's transformative pedagogy approach to learning, which emphasizes a new paradigm of learning with a focus on essential elements of language learning. This qualitative study aims to investigate the perspectives and experiences of pre-service English teachers in Indonesia in developing digital learning resources for English learners that resonate well with the nature of the Emancipated Curriculum.  A phenomenological research approach was adopted, and data were collected through a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with 16 pre-service English teachers who had completed their final research project on the development of digital learning resources that promote a holistic English language learning. The data was analysed using both corpus analysis and thematic analysis techniques. The findings reveal that pre-service English teachers in Indonesia encounter substantial obstacles when it comes to developing and utilizing digital resources. These challenges include limited access to technology, resistance from schools to embrace digital learning, and students' inadequate English proficiency levels. Despite these constraints, the pre-service teachers generally express satisfaction and confidence in creating their digital learning materials. They also view digital technology as a valuable resource that can enrich the teaching and learning experience. In conclusion, the paper emphasizes the need to equip preservice English teachers in Indonesia with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the digital age and work as curriculum engineers effectively. This study suggests that by integrating digital pedagogy and providing access to digital resources, preservice English teachers can become competent curriculum engineers who can deliver quality English language instruction in the 21st century. Ultimately, this will enhance the quality of English language instruction in Indonesia and ensure that preservice teachers are well-prepared to navigate the digital age and provide quality education to their students.
