    Get PDF
lingual illustrated children's stories are excellent tools for teaching English to beginners, particularly children. Translating such stories requires the use of simple and easily understandable language to aid children's growth and development. Thus, it is crucial that translation shifts in children's stories effectively convey meaning and are suitable for young learners. This study focuses on the translation shifts in the illustrated bilingual children's story "The Mouse and the Frog," which is rich in moral values and character development. The urgency of this research lies in identifying and analyzing the types and forms of translation shifts in noun phrases within the story. The objective is to develop models and provide empirical evidence on these shifts, enhancing understanding of translation practices, particularly in the context of noun phrases. The research employs document analysis and data triangulation methods, with media sourced from a YouTube channel. Results indicate that translation shifts in noun phrases predominantly occur in the form of unit shifts. This study aims to contribute a new model to the field of English translation, improving and expanding knowledge in this area. The findings are expected to enhance readers' understanding of translation, particularly for beginners in English, and provide insights for translators working with children's literature.

ENHANCING INTRINSIC MOTIVATION AND LISTENING SKILLS THROUGH INTEGRATING AUTHENTIC LEARNING MATERIALS

    Get PDF
Authentic learning materials (ALM) are recognized for providing meaningful and engaging educational experiences. However, there is a lack of extensive research examining the relationship between authentic learning materials, students’ intrinsic motivation, and their listening skills. This study addresses this gap by employing a quantitative method through the distribution of a 35-item Likert scale questionnaire to junior high school students in Batam. The questionnaire aimed to assess students’ attitudes and perceptions regarding the use of authentic materials in their English classes. The results from 30 students indicated that authentic learning materials positively influence student engagement, intrinsic motivation, and cultural awareness. These materials were found to enhance students' interest and participation in learning activities by making the content more relatable and applicable to real-life situations. The study also highlighted some challenges, such as difficulties in comprehension and issues with classroom dynamics, which could impact the overall effectiveness of these materials. Despite these challenges, the data suggest that authentic learning materials effectively bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world language use. This connection fosters a sense of achievement and satisfaction among students, as they can see the practical application of their language skills. Thus, incorporating authentic materials into the curriculum can provide significant benefits, enhancing the overall learning experience and motivation of students in the English classroom

    Get PDF
Phonetic symbols play a crucial role in linguistics by providing a systematic means to represent the phonological attributes of words, encompassing both pronunciation and orthographic manifestations. Their primary function is to enhance the identification and comprehension of words in spoken and written language contexts. In the realm of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), this study explores the utilization of phonetic symbols to enhance students’ clarity and understanding when engaging with the English lexicon. This application is integrated into the framework of the lexical approach, a pedagogical paradigm that underscores the significance of mastering vocabulary and language components such as collocations, phrases, and idiomatic expressions. The participants were 46 students enrolled in phonetics and phonology courses at the English Language Education Department, Bandar Lampung University, Indonesia. The research design follows a classroom action research model, aiming to enhance students’ listening skills through the strategic incorporation of phonetic symbols within the lexical approach framework. Based on observations and assessments, the study reveals that proficiency in recognizing and differentiating phonetic symbols contributes to students’ comprehension of words embedded in spoken texts. Furthermore, the results from the testing phase indicate that 36 out of 46 students achieved a passing score of 75 or higher, reflecting a success rate of 78%. This achievement aligns with the predetermined research success criteria, highlighting the positive impact of incorporating phonetic symbols within the lexical approach for improving students’ language skills. The implications suggest that incorporating phonetic symbols within the lexical approach framework can serve as a valuable pedagogical strategy for educators aiming to enhance students listening skills and overall language proficiency in an EFL context

This study investigates the portrayal of women in the Indonesian film “Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap” movie through a sociolinguistics study. The research aims to explore how language and dialogue in the movie reflect and reinforce societal attitudes towards women, examining the representation of female characters and their interactions within the narrative. The collected data are analyzed by applying qualitative and descriptive method. The dialogues undergo thematic analysis to identify recurring themes related to gender roles, power dynamics, and language use. This approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of how women’s speech in the film reflects or diverges from established sociolinguistic patterns. Triangulation is employed by comparing the film's portrayal of women with existing literature on gender roles in Indonesian society and media, ensuring the validity of the findings (Baxter, 2019; Sunderland, 2020). The results indicate that the portrayal of women in Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap is shaped by cultural influences and prominent themes such as 5 Gender Roles as a woman, 5 Emotional Attachment, and 10 Gender Conflict and Tension. However in the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap by comparing woman image and man image it can be found that woman are often portrayed as inferior, weak, and marginalized, while men appear as superior, strong, and dominant. There are some symbolic resistances, but man’s power still cannot be fully seized by woman. As an obedient being, Sarma always does whatever her parents told her to do and feels she must obey completely. Never in her life does she disobey her parents. She then compared what her life to her brothers’. The result come to the fact that the brothers were able to do something freely and disobey their arents because they are men, not a woman like Sarma. The film portrays women as individuals expected to obey men’s commands. Women are also portrayed as being of lower status than men. The patriarchy in this movie is also very noticeable. This portrayal reflects and potentially reinforces societal views of patriarchy and gender hierarchy in Indonesian medi

Furthermore, learners reported that AI tools effectively identify missed errors and enhance their understanding of grammar rules. Despite the positive perceptions, a portion of participants still values traditional feedback, suggesting a potential benefit in a blended approach that combines AI and human interaction. This research underscores the growing importance of integrating AI-driven tools in language education, highlighting their role in enhancing learner engagement and grammar proficiency. Future studies should investigate the long-term effects of AI feedback on language learning outcomes and explore specific features that maximize its effectiveness

HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS’ CHALLENGES IN WRITING JOURNAL ARTICLES: CHARACTERISTICS AND PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

    Get PDF
This qualitative study aimed to identify the challenges faced by final semester students in Indonesian tertiary institutions when writing journal articles, and propose potential solutions to these challenges. The study analyzed 32 articles published in Timor University e-journals, selected purposively from 16 study programs. Results showed that the majority of articles (59%) scored 75, indicating a need for improvement. The most significant challenges faced by students were related to introduction and method (13%), results (13%), and discussion (13%). These findings were consistent with the results of a questionnaire analysis, which identified method and abstract (22%), discussion (30%), and all parts (26%) as problematic areas for students. To address these issues, the study proposes a formal mandate requiring all lecturers to accompany their students in writing journal articles. This mandate would provide students with necessary support and guidance to improve their writing skills and meet the acceptable journal template requirements. The proposed solutions aim to alleviate the academic burden faced by thesis advisors, editors, and reviewers, while also improving the quality of articles produced by students
