The goal of this study is to improve EFL students' exposure to English language acquisition while preventing boredom. In order to get insight into the teaching-learning environment of the classroom and the speaking abilities of EFL students, the researcher used classroom action research. She conducted interviews with the English teacher and students as well as performed observations and administered assessments. With deliberate sampling, this method enables the collection of both qualitative and quantitative data. The pre-test, cycle 1 post-test, and cycle 2 post-test results all showed that EFL students' comprehension of idiomatic speech had significantly increased after using role-playing techniques, as recommended by the study. EFL students performed poorly in the first cycle, as evidenced by their average theoretical score of 62.57 and their 28.57% success rate on the practical test. The EFL mean score on the theoretical test increased to 80.00 in the second cycle with modifications, while the practical test success rate increased to 85.71%. This illustrates how the role-playing technique affects idiomatic speech in EFL. The study also discovered that learners prioritize specific word meanings over metaphorical interpretations, in contrast to native speakers. In the end, the study emphasizes how important it is to take perceptions into account while assessing idiom learning and processing

This study investigates the language learning strategies (LLSs) employed by high-achieving students in the TOEFL Junior Test within the context of an Indonesia Islamic boarding school. Motivated by Indonesia's lower rankings in literacy, particularly in English, as highlighted by the 2022 PISA results, this study aims to address the gap in understanding how students in this specialized educational setting approach LLSs. This study focuses on six high-achieving female ninth-grade students from SMP Al Izzah Islamic Boarding School Batu, identified as high achievers based on their superior TOEFL Junior Test scores and exceptional performance on the school’s English final test. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) 7.0, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that high achievers predominantly employ metacognitive strategies, such as goal setting and self-monitoring, as well as compensation strategies to overcome language barriers. Cognitive strategies, particularly engaging with English media, play a significant role in their language acquisition, while memory strategies are moderately used for vocabulary retention. This research highlights the importance of self-discipline, time management, and a supportive learning environment with its accessible teachers and nurturing community, significantly enhances continuous learning and overall students’ well-being. The study recommends for future research to expand the sample size to other Islamic boarding schools from various regions with more samples and explore the long-term impact of these strategies on academic and professional achievements

Education in Indonesia has developed a lot over time. Differentiated learning in the independent curriculum allows teachers to adjust instruction to meet the diverse needs of students. This approach acknowledges that students have varied learning styles, strengths, and interests. This study aimed to uncover the needs of senior high school students for developing differentiated instruction-based e-worksheet in English subjects for 10th Grade students. This study was conducted at MAN 3 Palembang to explore the perspectives of 30 tenth-grade students and their English teacher. Full text link
This research aims to investigate the relationship between critical reading abilities and critical discourse analysis (CDA) competencies among future 21st century educators, emphasizing the critical necessity for these educators to possess such skills in today's demanding educational landscape. A sample of 70 prospective teachers was analyzed to determine the interconnection between their abilities in critical reading abilities and CDA, with an exploration into how one skill may influence the other. Additionally, the study examines the role of cognitive style—specifically, field-independent and field-dependent thinking—as a moderating factor in this relationship. Findings indicate a significant positive impact of CDA capabilities on critical reading abilities, suggesting that proficiency in analyzing discourse critically enhances one's ability to read with a critical eye. Furthermore, the study reveals no significant difference in CDA and critical reading abilities between participants categorized as field-independent thinkers versus those identified as field-dependent thinkers. These outcomes highlight the need for further research to explore additional factors that may affect the development of critical reading and discourse analysis skills. The study concludes with a call for educational strategies that integrate both critical reading and CDA competencies, considering the varied cognitive styles of learners.

THE IMPACT OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING AND PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING ON WRITING SKILLS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON EXTROVERTED AND INTROVERTED INDONESIAN EFL STUDENTS

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on enhancing the writing skills of students, considering their extroverted or introverted personality traits. The objective was to explore how different teaching strategies might yield varying results depending on the students' personalities. Employing a quasi-experimental design with a time-series approach, the research methodology included pre-and-post assessments, classroom observations, self-assessment tools for evaluating students' writing competencies, and questionnaires to determine their preferences. The research utilized three distinct forms of tests, revealing that the significance (Sig.) value stood at 0.005, which is below the 0.05 threshold for significance. This indicates a differential impact of PjBL and PBL on the writing abilities of introverted students. Conversely, for extroverted students, the significance value derived from the data was 0.300, exceeding the 0.05 level. This outcome suggests acceptance of the null hypothesis (Ho) and rejection of the alternative hypothesis (Ha), meaning there was no discernible difference in the effectiveness of the two strategies for extroverted students. Participants in the study were fourth-semester English Department students at the University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (Untirta). The findings revealed that introverted students experienced variations in their writing skills when exposed to both PjBL and PBL, with these methods significantly influencing their writing abilities. In contrast, extroverted students did not show notable differences in their writing skills under the same teaching strategies, indicating that both PjBL and PBL were equally effective for them. This study underscores that the choice of teaching method can have varying impacts on the writing skills of students, particularly when considering their introverted or extroverted nature. It highlights that extroversion and introversion may play a role in how students respond to different educational approaches in the context of enhancing their writing skills
