    Technological Innovation for China’s Logistics Industry

    China’s logistics industry has started to pay attention to adopt more efficient logistics technologies to provide better services for their customers. This paper employes the questionnaire survey to study the factors influencing the adoption of technological innovations by logistics service providers in China as well as the influences of technological innovation on supply chain performance. Technological innovations are categorized into data acquisition technologies, information technologies, warehousing technologies, and transportation technologies. The results show that the adoption of technological innovations is significantly influenced by technological, organizational and environmental factors, and adopting innovative technologies will increase supply chain performance for the logistics industry in China.China’s logistics industry has started to pay attention to adopt more efficient logistics technologies to provide better services for their customers.     Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has generated a lot of attention in recent years as a method of replacing the barcode. This paper will begin by examining some of the origins of RFID technology. From there it will look at several applications of RFID technology within the health care industry. Next, privacy and legal issues will be examined.     This paper explores the main elements that influence innovation and the relationships among them. It is pointed out that innovation results from an entrepreneurial action inside an established institutional context, sustained by resources, abilities and competences and with the support of the necessary financial capital. Therefore, it is proposed that innovation is a function (just as the microeconomic production function) composed of entrepreneurship, institutions, capabilities and capital. Each one of these elements is explored individually, so that later the relationships among them can be analyzed. It is still suggested that the size of the firm is a moderator in the relationship between these elements and innovation. The study’s contribution it is the development of a conceptual model.Este artículo explora los principales elementos que influencian la generación de innovaciones y las relaciones existentes entre ellos. La generación de innovaciones es el resultado de un acto emprendedor dentro de un cuadro institucional establecido, sustentada por recursos, habilidades y competencias, y con el soporte del capital financiero necesario. Luego, se propone que la innovación es una función (así como la función producción en microeconomía) de espíritu emprendedor, instituciones, capacidades y capital. Cada uno de estos elementos es explorado individualmente, para después analizar las relaciones entre ellos. Se sugiere, también, que el tamaño de la firma sería un moderador en la relación entre estos elementos y la innovación. Como contribución se busca el desarrollo de un modelo conceptual.Este artigo explora os principais elementos que influenciam a geração de inovações e as relações existentes entre eles. A geração de inovações é resultado de um ato empreendedor dentro de um quadro institucional estabelecido, sustentada por recursos, habilidades e competências e com o suporte do capital financeiro necessário. Logo, propõe-se que a inovação é uma função (assim como a função produção na microeconomia) de empreendedorismo, instituições, capabilidades e capital. Cada um destes elementos é explorado individualmente, para que depois sejam analisadas relações entre eles.     The Impact of Financial Support System on Technology Innovation: A Case of Technology Guarantee System in Korea

    We analyzed the impact of financial support system on technological innovation of small and medium manufacturing firms in Korea, with a special interest in technology guarantee system. This was done using a sample of 1,014 Korean manufacturing firms of which 43% were venture companies. Our study provides two important conclusions. First, the result of empirical analysis indicates that financial support systems have a significant influence on both product innovation and process innovation of SMEs in Korea. Second, a more important conclusion of this research is that technology guarantee system impacts on product innovation; however not on process innovation.     The Knowledge society is based on the growing importance of the service sector in the whole economy. Knowledge intensity and technology intensity variables make up a range of services showing differential characteristics such as the geographic concentration level of these sectors. In the present article we analyse the concentration trends in knowledge and high technology intensive sectors, taking into account variables such as the number of companies, employment and wages and salaries.La sociedad del conocimiento se basa en la creciente importancia del sector servicios. Las variables de intensidad de conocimiento e intensidad tecnológica conforman una serie de servicios que presentan unas características diferenciales, como es el grado de concentración de estos sectores a nivel geográfico.     Assessment of Impacts of the Forest Incentive Program based on Eucalyptus Monoculture with the ‘INOVA-Tec System’

    The paper and cellulose industry uses as a source of raw material wood only from harvested forests, either in one’s own lands or in other people’s cultivated land, through land lease agreement or forest development programs. The present work suggests the use of a method created to evaluate the impacts of technological innovations, the Inova-tec System with modifications, to evaluate the impacts of the ‘Forest Incentive Program (Programa de Fomento Florestal) based on a Eucalyptus monoculture’. The method ‘INOVA-Tec System’ is a system that allows the analysis of: i) the scenario to develop the program, and ii) the performance evaluation of the program, through the analysis of indicators performance. Este trabalho propõe o emprego de uma metodologia destinada a avaliação dos impactos de inovações tecnológicas, o Inova-tec System, com modificações, para avaliar os impactos do ‘Programa de Fomento Florestal a partir da Monocultura do Eucalipto’. O método ‘INOVA-Tec System’ consiste de um sistema que permite a análise: i) do cenário para desenvolvimento do programa, e ii) da avaliação do desempenho do programa a partir do eucalipto, pela análise dos indicadores de desempenho. De posse destes dados, fica mais fácil para o avaliador elaborar a sua lista de recomendações para garantir o adequado manejo da cultura e o melhor gerenciamento dos impactos, de modo a mitigar a característica potencialmente problemática para o meio ambiente e para a sociedade

    Proyectos de Innovación: Formulación desde el Enfoque de Procesos

    An original proposal for the formulation of innovation projects is presented based on a process approach. The method consists on identifying the key components from the innovative idea and the corresponding processes. On each process it is determined the inputs, the change operators or main activities and the outputs or products. The strategy of the project is formulated from the relationships existing among the strategic processes. The proposal is backed up by a set of tables that contribute to develop the main components of the project. It is shown that the proposed methodology is consistent and easy to apply.Se presenta una propuesta original para la formulación de proyectos de innovación basada en el enfoque de procesos. El método consiste en ubicar los componentes fundamentales de la idea de innovación y establecer los procesos correspondientes, explicitando para cada proceso las entradas o insumos, los operadores de cambio o actividades sustanciales del proyecto y las salidas o productos del proyecto. La estrategia del proyecto se formula a partir de las relaciones existentes entre los procesos identificados. Tal propuesta está respaldada por un conjunto de fichas que contribuyen a facilitar el desarrollo de los principales componentes del proyecto.     Dynamics of Reverse Salience as Technological Performance Gap: An Empirical Study of the Personal Computer Technology System

    The evolution of technological systems is hindered by systemic components, referred to as reverse salients, which fail to deliver the necessary level of technological performance thereby inhibiting the performance delivery of the system as a whole. This paper develops a performance gap measure of reverse salience and applies this measurement in the study of the PC (personal computer) technological system, focusing on the evolutions of firstly the CPU (central processing unit) and PC game sub-systems, and secondly the GPU (graphics processing unit) and PC game sub-systems. The measurement of the temporal behavior of reverse salience indicates that the PC game sub-system is the reverse salient, continuously trailing behind the technological performance of the CPU and GPU sub-systems from 1996 through 2006. The technological performance of the PC game sub-system as a reverse salient trails that of the CPU sub-system by up to 2300 MHz with a gradually decreasing performance disparity in recent years. In contrast, the dynamics of the PC game sub-system as a reverse salient trails the GPU sub-system with an ever increasing performance gap throughout the timeframe of analysis.     Analysis of Patent Examination Effort Distribution based on the Queuing Theory

    In this paper, we present a mathematical model based on the queuing theory that simulates the examination process in a patent office, including its relation with the applicants. Through this statistical model, this study aims at evaluating the examination effort distribution among all examination stages, in order to establish the optimal examination condition, which means that a patent application would be granted, denied or withdrawn in the shortest period of time and the backlog of patent offices would be reduced, meeting the society demand in a more efficient way. This study also aims at evaluating the performance of a specific patent examiner based on the optimal condition.In this paper, we present a mathematical model based on the queuing theory that simulates the examination process in a patent office, including its relation with the applicants.
