    The aim of this article was to carry out a study of the life cycles of three products of Colombian companies; based on a logistic model of population growth as a life cycles measurement tool. We found that the products life cycles have a similar behavior to the population growth, according to an S curve. The inflection points of the curves were obtained by a nonlinear regression. These points might be used as a tool for strategic decision making in products, in terms of identifying key instants for launching technological innovations, investments and execute marketing strategies

    The growing concerns regarding the future of global energy supplies have encouraged R&D in alternative sources to complement the global energy matrix. Brazil has earned notoriety as one of the largest producers of ethanol and biomass. This has aroused other countries’ interest in Brazil’s capabilities. However, the technologies for converting biomass into ethanol are not sufficiently mature, and have been developed in a decentralized manner. The lignocellulosic ethanol technologies can be divided into the following three groups: pretreatment, enzymes and ethanol production. One of the most efficient methods for mapping such technologies is through patent applications because the applications provide important information on trends in long-term technological development. Among all the patent applications deposited in the Brazilian database, pretreatment technologies were the most exploited followed by enzymes and ethanol production. The large number of documents from USA and European countries efforts the importance of Brazil in this technological scenario

However, only some of the current biofuel programs are feasible, and most involve high social costs and environmental ironically. The economic, environmental and social impacts of biofuels are widely debated and needs to be carefully assessed before extending public support to programs of biofuels on a large scale.The country strategy on biofuels should be based on a thorough assessment of these opportunities and costs in the medium and long term. One factor to consider is that oil reserves will run out, experts say, in fifty years. It is as a technical tool for decision-making mainly institutions that support entrepreneurship. The method uses as a basis a model of how a system is formed around an enterprise, model that systematically relates Entrepreneur, Customers, Suppliers, Competition and the Sociaty, each of these elements together under rated a sum of 50 variables that describe them. The variables are prioritized using AHP method to get their contexts.     Technological Capability\u27s Predictor Variables

    The aim of this study was to identify the factors that influence in configuration of the technological capability of companies in sectors with medium-low technological intensity. To achieve the goal proposed in this article a survey was carried out. Based on the framework developed by Lall (1992) which classifies firms in basic, intermediate and advanced level of technological capability; it was found that the predominant technological capability is intermediate, with 83.7% of respondent companies (plastics companies in Brazil). It is believed that the main contribution of this study is the finding that the dependent variable named “Technological Capability” can be explained at a rate of 65% by six variables: development of new processes; selection of the best equipment supplier; sales of internally developed new technology to third parties; design and manufacture of equipment; study of the work methods and perform inventory control; and improvement of product quality

    Este estudio comprende un análisis estadístico sobre los resultados del diagnóstico de estrategia de innovación en 52 grupos de investigación de una Universidad en Medellín – Colombia, para validar el estado actual de los grupos frente a la innovación, sus estrategias, estructuras de equipos de desarrollo y otros temas relevantes. La metodología fue diseñada por el Grupo de Investigación de Política y Gestión Tecnológica, fundamentada en diferentes modelos: Metodología de Gestión Tecnológica por proyectos, diagnósticos de innovación de Albacete, Cataluña y metodología de estrategia de innovación de Melissa Schilling. Los resultados ofrecen una base para la formulación e implementación de estrategias de innovación en grupos que permitan mejorar la generación de innovación en productos, servicios, procesos, mercados y mejorar su competitividad

    Innovative Characteristics of Small and Medium Enterprises

    The purpose of the paper is to investigate the technological innovative characteristics in the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) belonging to the Italian manufacturing sector. A survey based on e-mail and fax questionnaire of 285 SMEs was conducted with a response rate of about 45%. On the basis of this survey, the innovative profile of SMEs has been highlighted as well as the factors and problems of innovative process analyzed. The methodology consisted in a descriptive analysis on general data and in a discriminant analysis on data related to the innovative activity and aimed at determine the factors distinguishing more and less innovative companies. The results show that innovative firms are market anticipation and customer focus, point to product enrichment in terms of different characteristics in respect to competitors’ products in order to obtain a superior product in terms of quality. Innovation results to be part of their business strategy and is based more around developing new ways of working than new product innovations
