E-Mentoring: An Innovative Twist to Traditional Mentoring
Many organizations have established and implemented traditional mentoring programs. Both qualitative and quantitative research studies have found that successful mentoring programs enhance productivity, job satisfaction and may ultimately lead to protégé advancement. Traditional methods of mentoring are created through the means of one on one relationships established between the mentor and the protégé. E-mentoring through the use of synchronous and asynchronous computer-mediated communication is a new means for establishing mentor protégé relationships by creating virtual teams. This paper seeks to compare and contrast traditional mentoring with e-mentoring and propose new innovative ways to use e-mentoring in an organizational setting
A New Method of Creating Technology/Function Matrix for Systematic Innovation without Expert
The technology/function matrix is comprised by specific technologies and functions, and through the technology/function matrix we can known what the technologies with functions have opportunities for innovation of product or technology. However, the technology/function matrix is very difficult to create, because the patents need to be read, analyzed and categorized into the technology/function matrix always more than hundreds or thousands. In this research, I propose a method to create a technology/function matrix just need to execute patent search without reading and analyzing patents. Through the proposed method anyone can create a technology/function matrix in a short time without experts’ help even if there are thousands of thousands of patents need to be read and analyzed
Open Innovation and Stakeholder Engagement
The paradox of open innovation lies in the conflict between the practical desire to reap the benefits of open innovation and concern over the risk that others will misappropriate those benefits. Stakeholder theory and recent developments in value creation through stakeholder engagement can assist with reconciliation of this inherent structural risk. The limitations of existing open innovation typologies are identified, and a process-based model of open innovation is proposed. The model is then expanded to include stakeholder engagement. When integrated with stakeholder engagement, open innovation processes can be understood to generate benefits beyond the acquisition of specific information sought from external experts. The addition of stakeholder engagement to the open innovation model allows for greater understanding and easier acceptance of the risks inherent in the open innovation process
Technology Innovation - Electronic Game in the Brazilian Higher Education
The Information and Communication Technologies provide a world of discoveries, relations and leanings, presenting possibilities that can help the teaching and learning process to adapt to the new social dynamics introduced by its use. The electronic games (video games), in particular, for its playful nature and because they are familiar to the young people, may provide a great assistant in this adaptation. The research presented here takes a theoretical framework based on Brazilian and international reference authors, to through action research, implement video games about financial mathematics, in a discipline of a higher education course of a public university in Brazil. The results confirm that the use of electronic games is well received by the students, showing that they perceived them as a motivating practice and as an introductory agent of a new process of teaching and learning for higher educatio
Call for papers: Fostering an Entrepreneurial Environment in an Emerging Nation: Lessons and Challenges from Chile
The level of entrepreneurial activity is related to several factors such as the educational level of the local population, the business environment, and the legal conditions (Grilo and Thurik 2005; van Stel et al 2005; Bowen and De Clercq 2008). Some of these macro level factors can explain not only the entrepreneurial capabilities, but also the type of entrepreneurial activity that occurs.
Transaction Costs and Organizational Competences: Explaining the Governance Structure for Manufacturing Stage
This article deals with the influence of transaction costs and organizational competences on the choice of governance structure for manufacturing stage in a productive system. The objective is to develop a conceptual model that explains the choice of supplier for manufacturing through transaction costs and organizational competences. Following earlier studies, the model proposes competences of the product´s owner influence the vertical scope in a relation moderated by transaction costs. The constructs in the model are: "governance structure", the dependent variable categorized as internal or external supplier, "transaction costs", measured by asset specificity of the product and bargain power of the firm in the manufacturing stage, and "competences on operations”, measured by experience and diversification of the firm. The study presents some methodological implications for applying the model in Brazilian pharmaceutical industry, through searching for secondary data on drugs and firms in a public database of the federal regulatory agency
Technological Capabilities of Brazilian Shipbuilding Suppliers
Technological capabilities (TC) play a key role in the competitiveness of firms in industrial sectors. Suppliers in emerging economies often acquire technological capabilities by operating and mastering technologies developed by others and then leveraging this learning to develop indigenous technologies. By reviewing research on firm specific technological capabilities, the development of global value chains and industrial clusters in emerging markets we discuss local suppliers’ insertion and upgrading in the supply chains of new large industrial enterprises. Using the Brazilian shipbuilding industry as context, we investigate and develop propositions related to the ability of local suppliers to develop technological capabilities that permit eventual insertion into the local supply chain. This research has applications for managers and policy makers from other emerging market countries seeking to increase local sourcing through development of local suppliers
Innovation with High Social Benefits and Corporate Financial Performance
This article analyzes the effect that innovation with high social benefit has on financial performance, and to improve our understanding of this effect we extend our research by analyzing the effect of being an innovation leader has on financial performance. We intend to give insight about which innovation strategy impacts with more intensity on financial performance. To support this analysis we will make use of the resource-based view theory and the institutional theory. Our research used the panel data technique. The final sample contains 2025 observations for 418 firms. The results of this research demonstrate that there is a negative and significant effect between innovation with high social benefit and financial performance, highlighting the importance of the involvement of governmental and non-governmental institutions to create an incentive for firms to incur in innovative activities that produce social benefits
Infrastructure Development: Public Private Partnership Path for Developing Rural Telecommunications in Africa
It is the quest of every government to achieve universal Access and service of telecommunication services and ICTs. Unfortunately due to the high cost of deploying infrastructure in rural areas of developing countries due to non-significant or no economic activity, this dream of achieving Universal access and service of telecommunications/ICTs have been stalled. This paper throws light on a possible Public Private Partnership framework as a development path that will enable affordable network technologies to be deployed in rural areas at a cost that will translate to what the rural dweller in a developing country in Africa can afford. The paper is a conceptual pape
