Open Innovation Practices in Strategic Partnerships of Cloud Computing Providers
The open innovation states that companies can and must use the available resources outside their boundaries. This combination of ideas aligned to the internal and external technologies are crucial to reach a leadership position. The present study aims to identify the practices of open innovation along the partnerships between providers of Cloud Computing. Social Network Analysis were used in the research. Data was collected through questionnaires secondary sources. The companies were asked to identify their strategic partnerships and to identify and characterize the practices of Open Innovation they actually use. Of the 26 strategic partnerships mentioned, only 11 were characterized as practices of the Open Innovation
Semantic test of a technology management model in family business
This paper assembles family business conceptions from the innovation and technology management perspective, and tests them in the case of a Mexican sugarcane producer. Literature indicates that non-financial objectives, risk aversion and strong controls negatively influence family firms’ innovation outcomes. Based on semantic network analysis, we collected transversal information on the firm’s technology activities, innovation values and organizational flows, which allowed for the identification of an organizational management profile that shapes an innovation style. Although we acknowledge literature consistency in aspects such as family direct influence and control, or the importance of STI partnerships and external knowledge, our findings didn’t identify any concerns about losing control in parts of the family business. This research contributes to the understanding of technology management and organizational elements in an emerging economy’s family firm from a relational perspective. Implications for theory endorsement and characterization of family business innovation and technology management in developing countries are discussed
Percepciones de académicos sobre las dificultades para el fomento de la innovación y el emprendimiento: el caso de la FCFM* de la Universidad de Chile
El objetivo de la presente investigación es describir y analizar la percepción de los profesores sobre las dificultades para fomentar la innovación y el emprendimiento en una institución de educación superior tradicional como lo es la Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas de la Universidad de Chile. El estudio, de carácter cualitativo, busca mejorar la toma de decisiones por parte de las instituciones involucradas. Se llevaron a cabo entrevistas semiestructuradas con los profesores de la Facultad. Los resultados señalan que mientras el término innovación no genera resistencia entre el profesorado, emprendimiento no produce el mismo consenso, ya que para algunos se relaciona con habilidades distintas a las que debieran ser formadas en la Universidad de Chile, dado su sello de alto prestigio y calidad. Esto a su vez implica que la exigencia y carga académica para los estudiantes sea muy alta, lo cual desincentiva la realización de proyectos extracurriculares de innovación y emprendimiento. Por otro lado, se reconoce un carácter extremadamente academicista, enfocado en el desarrollo de investigación no aplicada, altamente específica y desconectada de problemáticas del medio, que responde en gran medida a los incentivos establecidos para el quehacer académico. Esta cultura academicista se permea a los estudiantes, quienes encuentran pocas instancias de conexión con la realidad en su formación, de trabajo en equipo y de relación con otras disciplinas.
Innovación como campo de estudio en Latinoamérica 2010-2017: Brasil, Chile y México
Es objetivo de este trabajo explorar a la innovación como tema de estudio en Brasil, Chile y México, durante 2010-2017. Se recurre a la búsqueda de innovation y algunas variantes como tema de búsqueda en la base de datos Scopus. A partir de esa recopilación se ofrecen cuatro indicadores: se identifican áreas de conocimiento que concentran las publicaciones; algún grado de interdisciplinariedad del tema por país, que da una noción de difusión del tema y clústeres de conceptos asociados a la innovación que son relevantes para cada país. Se encuentran diferencias entre países: el tema es más interdisciplinario en México, pero en Brasil se aborda con mayor profusión y sistematicidad con respecto a Chile y México
La Política de Compra Pública como Estímulo a la Innovación y el Emprendimiento
RESUMEN: En los últimos años se ha produciendo una creciente tendencia hacia la incorporación de instrumentos de articulación de la demanda. Uno de los instrumentos que mayor atención ha recibido es el de la compra pública. En este artículo tratamos de ilustrar cómo el sector público puede comportarse de una manera estratégica, considerando la innovación como uno de los principios fundamentales a la hora de realizar dichas compras. Todo ello queda reflejado por medio de cuatro iniciativas de compras públicas como estímulo a la innovación. Además de ello, ofrecemos un marco conceptual en el que se relaciona la innovación con el emprendimiento y se analiza el potencial de la compra pública para estimular ambos fenómenos.Palabras clave: compra pública, innovación, emprendimiento.ABSTRACT: In recent years a major use of demand side instruments to innovation policy has been witnessed, one of this instruments being public procurement. This article aims at providing some evidence on how the public sector can adopt a strategic behavior, considering innovation as one of the main rationales in their public procurement processes. We illustrate this role by analyzing four cases that shed some light on how public procurement for innovation can take place. In addition, we also introduce a conceptual framework relating innovation to entrepreneurship, and the potential role of public procurement as an effective instrument fostering both activities is analysed.Keywords: public procurement, innovation, entrepreneurship
Proposal of a Modelling of the Innovation Process in an International Manufacturing Company
Nowadays, to cope with the competition, and to ensure the durability of their activities, companies have to be able to innovate. Manufacturing companies operating in a B2B market often perceive innovation as a technological result. However, innovation is often more characterized as a process. The needs of the users, and not only the technology, can achieve innovation. In this context, our paper intends to determine how to involve better the users in the innovation process of an international manufacturing company, which is, according to us, representative of the current manufacturing companies. The aim of our research paper is to help manufacturing companies to manage innovation led by users, and to implement their innovation process so that they will be able to set up specific tools for each action of the process. The study proposes a diagram-based language Structured Analysis and Design Technique (SADT) that is based on the normative guide FD X50-271 of the French national organization for standardization (AFNOR). The SADT model we propose usefully complements this guide, to make the innovation process more understandable, practical and operational, for manufacturing companies, which are often helpless when faced with the subject. A critical analysis of the model we propose completed in a manufacturing company through semi-structured interviews of the innovation team and questionnaire for all the employees shows the application of the model in the company
Vectors of Innovation Definition for Application During Conceptual Design Stage of Product Development Process
The quest for product with unique attributes and added value, along with the shortening of product life cycle are directly related to the degree of competitiveness of organizations. The identification of innovation opportunities in the early stages of the product development process is seen as a means for increasing competitiveness. Among those stages that have relevant impacts during the design process, is conceptual design, when many important decisions related to the degree of novelty of a design solution are taken. This study aims at identifying elements connected to innovation issues that can contribute to the selection of conceptual proposals that have potential to be transformed into novel and successful products. To map these elements, a literature review was conducted in parallel with a reverse analysis of a set of so called innovative products. From the recognition and grouping of these elements that can induce innovation, a field research was conducted with professional designers in order to identify if they recognized the set of elements as representing vectors of innovation, as well as, their relative importance. Next, a descriptive application was run, considering a real design situation extracted from literature, illustrating how to select a conceptual design solution that presents the greater potential for innovation, from the set of elements identified. Thus, this study provides the identification and determination of degrees of importance for inducing elements innovation in order to demonstrate the possibility of assessing potential for innovation in the early stages of the product development process
Global Organization of Innovation and Cooperability in Brazilian Multinationals
Understanding the dissipation of innovations is necessary to develop them, as a company on its own does not have all the capabilities that it needs. On the contrary, they are increasingly spread over internal and external contexts, and are not developed in isolation. Most of the time, they depend on interactive, innovative processes in a global context. The aim of this study is to evaluate how the global organizational structure of innovation affects the dynamic capability of cooperation (cooperability) in Brazilian multinationals (BMNs). To achieve this goal, we conducted a survey of BMNs, and a final sample of 60 companies answered a structured questionnaire. We performed statistical tests such as Factor Analysis, Cronbach\u27s Alpha, Multiple Regression and Hierarchical Cluster, and cross-analysis of quantitative results that enabled us to create a Cooperability Model, that is, a model of local, international and global development for a dynamic capability of cooperation in BMNs. The results show that technological strengths of foreign subsidiaries and the reverse transfer of their capabilities to the parent company and technology partners affect the dynamics of cooperation in BMNs (inputs and results of cooperability). Furthermore, we detected an inverse relationship between the autonomy of foreign subsidiaries and the dynamic of cooperation in BMNs
University industry links and product innovation: cooperate or contract?
The role of universities in product innovation has received considerable attention over the past decade. However, little is known about how the type of formal university-firm interaction predicts innovative performance and the degree of novelty of new products. This research differentiates two forms of firm high-relational interaction with universities: R&D contracting and cooperation. We exploit the panel structure of a dataset of 5,858 Spanish manufacturing firms with fixed-effects models. The empirical analysis finds that, although both contracting and cooperation predict product innovative performance, the two activities differ in the degree of novelty of new product outcomes. The implications are that the codified nature and asymmetric scope of R&D contracting is more suitable for exploitative innovation, resulting in product innovation that is incremental in nature. On the other hand, the possibility to exchange and create tacit knowledge and the explorative nature of R&D cooperation provide firms with the opportunity to better access the broad knowledge base of universities, leading to product innovations with a higher degree of novelt
Cooperation for innovation in developing countries and its effects: evidence from Ecuador
This paper evaluates the impact of the most common innovation linkages by type of innovation activity on firms’ innovation inputs and outputs. In order to estimate the casual effects, we employ Inverse Probability Weighting, while focusing on exclusive cooperative agreements to prevent our results from being affected by the presence of additional relationships in other activities or with other types of partners. Results indicate that cooperation in non-R&D innovation activities positively affects the introduction of new-to-the-firm product, marketing and organizational innovations, while cooperation in both R&D and non-R&D activities also affects R&D intensity and new-to-the-market product innovation. Furthermore, firms that cooperate exclusively in obtaining information, which is mainly carried out with suppliers and customers, are more likely to introduce new-to-the-firm product and organizational innovations
