La vida social de la innovación: una mirada pragmática a las prácticas de producción de conocimiento en el mundo de la consultoría

This article unpacks the different practices and modes of knowledge that constitutes innovation consultancy.  By relying on recent debates in economic sociology, it argues that innovation consulting work can be understood as the fabrication of types of situations that help to evoke non yet existing objects as a potential form of economic value. We call these situations as "innovation atmospheres". This theoretical argument is empirically deployed by presenting material from a six-month ethnographic case study consisting of attending innovation workshops developed for companies. We identify that different types of innovation atmospheres arise from the work involved in of mobilizing affects, devices, and metaphors to induce indeterminate situations. We describe how these atmospheres involve evaluating and prioritizing reality in specific ways.  Finally, we conclude by discussing the similarities and differences between the constitutive operations of innovation consulting and other social practices oriented to produce the new, such as the art world.

Performance implications of organizational and interorganizational ambidexterity

In the pursuit of higher performance, firms often complement their exploitation- and exploration-based innovations with activities of co-exploitation and co-exploration with other organizations. Previous studies have examined organizational and interorganizational implications of ambidexterity in a separate way. However, we combine internal and external contributions of exploitation and exploration by analyzing the moderating role of interorganizational ambidexterity in the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and firm performance. Data are collected from a sample of 245 manufacturing companies that developed exploitation- and exploration-based innovations. A regression model is estimated to test the hypothesis. The results suggest that firms reach superior performance by developing a balance between high levels of organizational and interorganizational ambidexterity simultaneously

Use of crowdfunding in Chile: an exploratory approach

The FinTech industry includes crowdfunding companies, which consist of collaborative financing platforms. The potential use of crowdfunding among Chilean undergraduate students is empirically analyzed. An ordered probit model is used to test the determinants of the probability that a student will use a crowdfunding platform in the future. Also, a qualitative analysis containing arguments by which students would or would not use crowdfunding in the future is presented. The results indicate that trust in financial institutions and prior crowdfunding knowledge have a positive and significant effect on the probability of using these platforms. This paper constitutes one of the first to explore the growing crowdfunding market in Chile from the demand perspective

High-growth firms’ behavior in Latam: the case of ICT sector in Ecuador

The work aims to study the High-Growth Companies (HGF) of the ICT sector in Quito-Ecuador and contribute to improve the understanding of the behavior of HGFs in the LATAM region by presenting empirical evidence. A tripod approach is used focusing on the Resource-based view with the test of 7 hypotheses over a case study. In addition, a contextualized survey for the case was carried out to cover both the Institution and the Industrial based view. A multivariate analysis was performed to explore what factors allow us to understand the high-growth behavior. The results show that 4 of the 7 hypotheses were accepted. The correlations between profitability, leverage, liquidity, innovation, and sales growth are relatively "low" but "statistically significant." An explanation is given according to the theoretical framework built. Otherwise, factors such as: solvency, infrastructure (machinery and equipment), exports “did not present statistically significant correlation”

Networks, obstacles, and resources for innovative performance: An analysis via neural networks for prediction in the manufacturing industry

This document aims to predict the level of innovation in manufacturing companies in Colombia between 2017-2018. A forecasting mechanism for innovation performance has been constructed using Neural Networks (NNs). This model considers the objectives of innovation, obstacles to innovation, knowledge networks, and technical information of each one of the firms. Results show that demand push, vertical sources, financial obstacles, and qualified personnel are the most important variables in predicting innovative performance. Our empirical analysis uses firm-level innovation survey data from the EDIT (Encuesta de Desarrollo e Innovación Tecnológica in Spanish, Technological Development, and Innovation Survey in English) for Colombia for the years 2017-2018

The use of electronic resources to conduct payments in increasing. This scenario indicates the relevance of new studies to understand the determinants and the potential effects of Digital Financial Services (DFS) adoption. In this paper, we test the effect of DFS adoption on the satisfaction with business performance, considering a sample comprised of responses from entrepreneurs that are also mothers (mompreneurs). The database includes 177 questionnaires that presented complete responses for the items analyzed in this paper; these questionnaires were collected during the period from April, 2020 to June, 2020 (which involves the COVID-19 related crisis). Using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation model, the main results suggest that attitude towards Information and Communication Technologies has a positive effect on DFS adoption. Moreover, the use of DFS presented a positive effect on the satisfaction with business performance, which means that the use of technologies to make electronic payments, to manage business bank account, and to provide electronic payment alternative for customers can improve the business performance satisfaction of women entrepreneurs

Unpacking the Precision Technologies for Adaptation of the Chilean Dairy Sector. A Structural-functional Innovation System Analysis.

Precision technologies and smart farming practices are spreading globally. However, there are still limited insights into how these technologies develop in newly adopted countries and adapt to different local systems, especially in emergent economies. This article aims to diagnose the technological innovation system of precision technologies within Chile\u27s dairy sector, focusing on the possibilities of development and co-evolution. A structural-functional innovation system analysis is performed, based upon 41 semi-structured interviews. The main results indicate that precision technologies are in the implementation phase in the Chilean dairy sector, with scarce experience and undeveloped knowledge of their benefits. Moreover, there are insufficient interactions between different actors with limited information sharing due to the lack of trust as a cultural issue, affecting the development of smart farming practices. Some strategies to develop and co-evolve the technological systems are discussed, as is the need to increase trust and cooperation between the actors of the dairy sector

The cooperation process between university and industry is complex . It presents a set of factors that motivate and interfere building these relationships. The aim of this paper is to compare the main cooperation process’ motivations and barriers between university and industry in Brazil and Ireland. This is a study of multiple cases and configures itself as exploratory, with a qualitative approach . Data collection was executed by conducting a questionnaire with six technology transfer offices from Brazilian universities and three from Irish universities. The results show that the main motivations of Brazilian offices stem from financial issues and the possibility of being recognized whilst the Irish offices derived from social aspects. Regarding barriers, for the Brazilian offices these are mainly cultural and for the Irish offices the lack of entrepreneurial culture and the focus on basic science are the more common aspects, however, both experience excessive or rigid regulations

The goal of this study is to assess the relationships between the country’s regulatory institutions and the relational capability and performance of strategic clinical trials alliances. The country’s regulation is made up of a set of formal institutions, i. e. codified rules, which aim to determine social actors’ practices. Strategic alliances are long-term cooperative relationships voluntarily established between two or more autonomous companies with shared interests and goals to create competitive advantage. Clinical-trial strategic alliances are organized according to the contractual relationship and parties’ relational capabilities that aim to overcome difficulties in the partnership activities and ensure intercompany cooperation, reflecting on organizational efficiency and effectiveness, and impacting on alliance performance.  This work developed a critical review of the literature and expanded it through the establishment of novel relational propositions regarding the relationship between formal regulatory institution of countries and strategic alliances for clinical trials of new medicines
