    Makanan, Ingatan, dan Identitas: Kajian Kuliner Pecel dalam Novel Rahasia Salinem

    Makanan dalam budaya Jawa tidak hanya dipandang sebagai kebutuhan fisik, tetapi juga sebagai sarana pewarisan nilai dan identitas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi pecel sebagai simbol ingatan dan identitas budaya Jawa dalam novel Rahasia Salinem karya Brilliant Yotenega dan Wisnu Suryaning Adji. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan kajian budaya, yang didukung oleh teori representasi Stuart Hall, konsep cultural memory Jan Assmann, teori gastronomy and identity Sidney Mintz, dan semiotika makanan. Data utama diperoleh dari analisis mendalam terhadap narasi dalam novel, dengan fokus pada deskripsi makanan dan nilai-nilai yang menyertainya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pecel dalam novel tidak hanya hadir sebagai latar budaya, tetapi juga menjadi artefak kultural yang memuat memori kolektif, nilai spiritualitas, dan simbol identitas gender. Praktik kuliner yang diwariskan tokoh Salinem mencerminkan hubungan antara makanan, keluarga, dan pengalaman migrasi. Pecel menjadi medium komunikasi antargenerasi serta bentuk resistensi terhadap keterputusan budaya akibat modernitas. Melalui proses memasak dan penyajian, makanan dikonstruksikan sebagai simbol cinta, kesederhanaan, dan keberlanjutan tradisi Jawa. Dengan demikian, novel Rahasia Salinem memperlihatkan bahwa makanan tradisional juga berfungsi sebagai pusat makna dalam narasi sastra, sekaligus memperkuat posisi kuliner lokal sebagai mekanisme pelestarian budaya dan ekspresi identitas kolektif masyarakat Jawa

    This study explores the transformation of the protagonist in Wes Anderson's short film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023), through the lens of Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic arc. The film narrates the spiritual and existential journey of Henry Sugar, a wealthy man who shifts from materialism to altruism after discovering a meditative technique that allows him to see without using his eyes. Initially motivated by greed and self-interest, Henry experiences a profound internal transformation that leads him to use his abilities for philanthropic purposes. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on narrative analysis supported by Ricoeur’s three-phase interpretative framework: explication, understanding, and appropriation. Findings suggest that Henry’s transformation embodies a significant ethical and existential shift, highlighting the film's critique of consumerism and spiritual emptiness. Moreover, Anderson’s distinctive aesthetic—marked by symmetrical compositions, pastel palettes, and theatrical mise-en-scène—reinforces the symbolic depth and moral trajectory of the narrative. This research underscores how cinema can be interpreted as a reflective medium that facilitates ethical contemplation and personal meaning-making through character development. Ultimately, the study affirms that The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar functions not only as artistic storytelling but also as a philosophical exploration of purpose, morality, and the transformative potential of self-discovery

    Toward a Refined Understanding of Cluster Reduction: Phonotactic Innovation and Elision in Bangkalanese Madurese

    This article examines the phenomenon of elision in the vocabulary of the Bangkalan dialect of Madurese, a feature that reveals both systematic regularities and sporadic irregularities in its phonological structure. The investigation addresses the principles underlying elision that occur in a patterned manner as well as those that emerge unpredictably, thus pointing to deeper complexities in the dialect’s phonetic/phonemic system. The data were elicited from two native speakers of the Bangkalan dialect through structured interviews using an instrument originally designed by Nothofer and later refined by Laksono and Savitri (2009). The recordings were transcribed phonetically to facilitate analysis, after which the forms were closely examined to classify their elision status and taxonomy. The analysis identified seven types of elision-based phonological processes: apheresis, syncope, vowel cluster reduction, initial syllable reduction, apocope, final syllable reduction, and double syllable reduction. Among these, syncope emerges as the most influential, contributing to the proliferation of consonant clusters that distinguish Bangkalan Madurese from other dialects. Furthermore, the three reduction processes, initial, final, and double syllable reduction, play a role in shortening lexical items, thereby shaping a vocabulary that is characteristically more compact than that of other Madurese varieties. These findings underscore the interaction between systematic phonological tendencies and irregular developments, positioning Bangkalan Madurese as a dialect that simultaneously preserves, reshapes, and mystifies the broader landscape of Madurese phonolog

    Cultural translation is a complex process that involves transferring messages between two linguistic codes while considering the sociocultural contexts of both the source and target languages. It requires a holistic approach to navigate various challenges and ensure meaning equivalence. One key perspective in translation studies is the examination of translation through the lens of specific cultural concepts. This study explores the dynamic relationship between translators, the translation of culturally specific expressions, and the quality of the translated work. Understanding cultural nuances is essential, as language is deeply intertwined with the values, traditions, and worldviews of a community. Translators must not only have linguistic proficiency but also possess cultural awareness to convey meaning accurately. Inadequate cultural adaptation may lead to misinterpretation, loss of meaning, or even offense in the target language. Thus, cultural translation requires strategies that balance fidelity to the source text with the naturalness and clarity needed for target readers.This article presents findings from research analyzing the translation of Madurese cultural expressions into English. The study examines distinctive cultural expressions found in Madura, the strategies translators employ to convey these expressions, and the impact of these strategies on message transfer and translation quality. The research draws data from translators working in local government, private sectors, and educational institutions, as well as from official and unofficial documents containing Madurese cultural expressions. Data collection methods include document analysis, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews, analyzed using an interactive model

    Tari Pecut is a traditional dance that is part of the Karapan Sapi performing arts in Madura Island. This dance symbolizes courage, warrior spirit, and the uniqueness of Madurese culture. This study aims to explore the symbolic meanings of costumes and props in Tari Pecut and analyze how the dance represents Madurese culture using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed based on the concepts of sign, object, and interpretant. The findings are expected to provide a deeper understanding of Tari Pecut as a manifestation of Madurese culture and reveal the values, norms, and cultural experiences embedded in its elements

    Interview with the Stutterers: How Do They Manage the Conversation? (an Analysis on Turn-taking Strategies)

    Stutterers are people with disfluencies in talking. They have problems maintaining their turn in a conversation. For that reason, they need to find some strategies to manage the conversation well. This study aims to find out what types of turn-taking strategies were used by stuttering people and why they tend to use them. The theories used in this research are from Stenstrom and Bloodstein. The data for this research are taken from three interview YouTube videos with stuttering people. The video was then analyzed based on Stenstrom's turn-taking strategy theory as well as Bloodstein's stuttering theory. The results of the analysis showed that the strategy most often used by the stuttering people is filled pause/verbal filler which is part of the holding the turn strategy. The purpose of this most commonly used strategy is to maintain the stutterer’s turns to speak so that there is no interruption by the interlocutor and it becomes part of the disfluencies suffered by people with stuttering, as a thought process in expressing words

    The purpose of the study was to determine the types of code switching and code mixing as well as the factors that cause code switching and code mixing in Ushul Fiqh Learning at Kulliyatul Mu'allimin Al-Islamiyah Islamic Boarding School Ibadurrohman Baleendah. This research uses descriptive qualitative method, data collected through listening and recording techniques on data sourced from recordings of the learning process of Ushul Fiqh learning at Kulliyatul Mu'allimin Al-Islamiyah Islamic Booarding School Ibadurrohman Baleendah. Data in the form of conversations between teachers and students in learning Ushul Fiqh at Kulliyatul Mu'allimin Al-Islamiyah Islamic Boarding School Ibadurrohman Baleendah. The results of this study indicate that code switching contained in Ushul Fiqh learning at Kulliyatul Mu'allimin Al-Islamiyah Ibadurrohman Islamic Boarding School Baleendah is external code switching. Code switching is in the form of switching from Arabic to Indonesian or from Indonesian to Arabic. The main cause of code switching is the speaker's desire to explain the material in a way that is easier for students to understand, and so that interlocutors who are familiar with the term can understand. While the code mix contained in Ushul Fiqh learning at Kulliyatul Mu'allimin Al-Islamiyah Ibadurrohman Islamic Boarding School Baleendah is code mixing outer. In the form of Arabic mixed with Indonesian or vice versa Indonesian mixed with Arabic. The factor that causes this code mix is because of the speaker’s habits in daily communication.

    This research reviews the concepts of liminality and ambivalence in the novel Burung-Burung Manyar by Y.B. Mangunwijaya using a qualitative descriptive approach. The analysis describes how the two concepts are reflected in the narrative, characters, and themes of the novel. The results of the analysis show that the characters in the novel experience liminality, being on the verge of transition between two different identities or cultures, as well as ambivalence, with mixed feelings between emotions and beliefs. The novel depicts the complexity of the relationship between colonials and colonists and the individual's experience of self-discovery in the midst of cultural and social conflict

    This research aims to express the portrait of women in the novel Manusia Bebas by analyzing the feminist literary criticism approach that provides another space in literary appreciation and criticism. The analysis conducted by examining the novel Manusia Bebas by Suwarsih Djojopoespito uses the repeated reading method and the qualitative descriptive method so that it is possible to open up space for interpretation regarding female characters and their position in the novel. The qualitative research method is also known as the interpretative method because the research data is more related to the interpretation of the data found in the field. The results of the research on the novel "Manusia Bebas" by Suwarsih Djojopoespito found Sulastri's role as a child, Sulastri's role in society, and Sulastri's role as a wife. The most basic role for a child is to respect their parents. But this obedience is not always absolute. Sulastri is committed to fighting for the right to education for the community by establishing folk schools or private schools and choosing freedom outside the lines. In order to support and achieve her goal, she supported Sudarmo even though she had to live with hardship. Even so, Sulastri was still a critical woman who also criticized her own husband to also urge him to prosper her as his wife and child
