ISLAMIST PARTY, ELECTORAL POLITICS AND DA’WAH MOBILIZATION AMONG YOUTH: The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) in Indonesia

    Get PDF
The involvement of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS, Partai Keadilan Sejahtera) in the electoral democratic system in Indonesia raises a question whether it is possible for a political party with a deeply religious ideology to liberalize and entertain democracy. The decision to enter politics does not infrequently entail an abandonment of ideological purity. It represents an acceptance of the political order and power sharing-based politics. While identity and ideology are instrumental in political mobilization for PKS, it has no choice but to negotiate and interact with other political actors through coalitions and parliamentary politics. A modern party involved in a competitive and rule-based system, it is also required to broaden its electorate and reach out to non-Islamist voters. It is intriguing in this context to explore the party’s strategy to maintain its Islamist platforms and the base of support while allying itself with distinctly non-Islamist ruling elites, and engage in the pragmatic ruling coalition. Understanding the paradoxical roles of an Islamist party when involved in the on-going electoral democratic process, this paper also looks at the future of political Islam in Indonesia

    Get PDF
Religious views on gender and man-woman relation in Indonesia is significant in shaping how the people including the survivors of the domestic violence perceive it. These views seem to be more intact than state initiative regulations, such as Law No. 23/2004 on the Elimination of domestic Violence. This paper tries to explore several things related to the domestic violence in Makassar, Indoneisa. The first is the correlation between the perception of  survivors about domestic violence with their gender awareness. The second is the way  that the constructed gender views are also influenced by religious interpretations. The last is the variety of interpretations on verses in the Qur’an related to gender and domestic violence. Most importantly, the paper also analyses the Qur’anic text in relation to the understanding of domestic violence justification and offer a new reading of the Qur’an using Hadith perspective

GENDERED CAREER PRODUCTIVITY AND SUCCESS IN ACADEMIA IN INDONESIA’S ISLAMIC HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

    Get PDF
Career advancement in Indonesian academia is nationally regulated. It, theoretically, provides equal opportunities for men and women to be productive and successful. The purpose of this study is to analyze gender effects on academic career productivity and success. Seven-hundred and fifty questionnaires were distributed randomly to eight Islamic Higher Education Institutions in seven provinces, from which 220 (Men = 57.7%, and Women = 42.3%) respondents returned the questionnaires with an analyzable quality. Descriptive and multivariate analyses are employed for analyzing and presenting the results. The paper argues that women in Islamic Higher Education Institutions are less productive in terms of publications, hold lower academic rank and leadership positions, and earn significantly less than men. It further argues that Islamic Higher Education Institutions should provide specific empowerment for women by, for example, providing support for their continuing education, professional development, and career opportunities

This article deals with Metode Terjemah Gandul (MTG, literally “hanging translation method”) or popularly known as utawi iki iku translation method. It presents two points about the method that has been widely used for translating Arabic-Islamic books to local languages in Indonesian pesantrens. First, it denies the prevailing opinion that MTG is unique only to Javanese pesantrens. The paper shows some similar translation methods in other local languages such as Sundanese, Maduranese, and Malay. Second, the researcher promotes three main agendas concerning the MTG history. Although the method is widely used in Indonesia pesantrens and is regarded one of the most valuable pesantrens intellectual properties, its history has not clearly uncovered yet. The three research agendas include: (1) who was the creator of the MTG; (2) what language was initially used; and (3) when was the MTG created. The research gives the limited answer for each question which could lead to further and deeper researches and studies

THE NAHDLATUL ULAMA: Its Early History and Contribution to the Establishment of Indonesian State

    Get PDF
Established on 31 January 1926 in Surabaya, East Java, by some prominent kyais like K.H. Abdul Wahab Hasbullah and K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari, the Nahdlatul Ulama was born in the culture of pesantren where ‘traditional Islam’ has been rooted and preserved. In this context, the Nahdlatul Ulama declared its religious ideology as ‘ahl al-sunnah wa al-jama’ah.’ This religious ideology has become important characteristics of the Nahdlatul Ulama that differentiate itself from Muslim ‘modernist’ organizations. In its early movements, the Nahdlatul Ulama plyed a pivotal role by, for example, banning the Muslim youths from entering the Dutch military service, prohibiting the Muslims from supporting the Dutch army, and rejecting the Dutch aid which was offered to the Nahdlatul Ulama’s madrasas. Furthermore, together with other nationalist movements, the Nahdlatul Ulama actively took part in the process of establishing the Indonesian State and in the war to defend the Indonesian independence against the Dutch who tried to re-establish their colonial rule in Indonesia. These facts, undoubtedly, proved that the Nahdlatul Ulama made a great contribution to the nation and state of Indonesia

This paper deals with the idea of reforming an Islamic education in Indonesia through the educational system of pesantren by referring particularly to the thought of Imam Zarkasyi, the founder and leader of Pesantren Gontor. The paper argues that Gontor symbolizes not only the courage of people formerly regarded as educationally marginalized, offering what is best for their fellow country-men, but also the very quality of Islam itself as well as its ability to deal with ever-present social problems. Delving into the depth of Imam Zarkasyi’s thinking, the paper identifies that there are several areas in which he tried his utmost to renew the outlook of his pesantren: (1) the method of Arabic-teaching as a foreign language, (2) the development of pesantren curriculum which integrates both Islamic and non-Islamic sciences, (3) the integration of intra-curricular, extra-curricular, and co-curricular subject-matters, (4) the combination between moral, intellectual, spiritual-religious, and physical education and education in self-management, leadership, and life-skill, (5) managerial base for the endowment system so as to strengthen the institutional aspect of the pesantren. The paper argues that the success of the pesantren lies not only in its ability to produce men of excellence but also its systematic efforts to accumulate wealth

ISLAMIC MICROFINANCE INITIATIVES TO ENHANCE SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES IN INDONESIA: From Historical Overview to Contemporary Situation

    Get PDF
This paper highlights the policies and institutional setting of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) development in Indonesia, followed by a discussion on the players in Islamic microfinance. Emphasis has been given to the potential role of Baitul Mal wa Tamwil (BMT, Islamic cooperative) as a strategic community-based micro lending initiative. The importance of Islamic microfinance initiatives as part of national program for the development of SMEs in Indonesia is also discussed. This paper argues that Islamic microfinance initiatives in Indonesia could represent an alternative source of finance for SMEs. The role of SMEs, especially after the Asian monetary crisis, was considered a safety valve for the national economic recovery both in enhancing economic growth as well as in reducing the unemployment rate. Credit distributed to SMEs has minimum risk and has sounder and better performance compared to larger enterprises. However, although having a significant role, SMEs actually have serious problems particularly as related to their capability in accessing formal financial institutions. This paper concludes by identifying the potential linkages between players in Islamic microfinance and highlights some critical points in their activities

This paper is concerned with exploring the dissemination and politization of radical Islamic ideology in Makassar. Little has been done to study this important issue. How did radical ideology develop from time to time in Makassar and how has it evolved to become the political power in the region have gone unnoticed. This paper tries to fill this gap. It assumes that radical ideology is a form of discourse, going through a paradigmatic test in which it was criticized, deconstructed, constructed and reconstructed. The paper is part of the attempts to deconstruct radical ideology by means of dismantling two main factors that have caused it to flourish, the actors and organizations of the ideology. A particular attention is give to the following two issues, in what way the ideology may be regarded as a discourse, and how this discourse is being translated into an ideology. These two specific problems becomes the centre of the analysis together with the process in which they intermingle
