    The Farmworker Health Landscape: Barriers to improving health and safety in U.S. agriculture

    Abstract: Farm labor is one of the most grueling jobs in the United States with high fatality rates and poor health outcomes for workers. Through the development of a conceptual framework titled the Farmworker Health Landscape and a survey with 132 farmers and dairy producers in the Northeast United States, this thesis presents a theoretical and empirical explanation of the barriers to improving health and safety for farmworkers. Certain political, sociocultural and economic factors act as structural barriers through the way that they shape the determinants of health for this largely immigrant farmworker population. Determinants of health are broadly classified as working conditions, access to health care and housing conditions.     Resedimented Nile Silty Clay (RNSC): Characterization and Soil Behavior Comparison

    Abstract: A geotechnical laboratory test program was performed to evaluate the engineering properties of resedimented Nile Silty Clay. A bulk sample of Nile Silty Clay was collected from a construction site in Cairo, Egypt and shipped to Tufts University in Somerville, Massachusetts. The sample was characterized by index property tests and prepared for the resedimentation specimen reconstitution method. Three Constant Rate of Strain (CRS) tests were conducted to observe the compression behavior of RNSC. Sixteen triaxial tests were performed to determine the stress-strength-strain behavior of RNSC. From the testing program the compression ratio, effective friction angle, undrained shear strength, lateral stress ratio and undrained secant Young's modulus for at low stress (<1 Mpa) was quantified.     A qualifying paper submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education. Abstract: Researchers have investigated how students may represent indeterminate (i.e., variable or fixed unknown) quantities using expressions in natural language, non-numerical symbols, and external representations, implicitly treating indeterminate quantities much as if they were known quantities (Radford, 2011). The present study aims to address the role of gestures in the development of student’s algebraic thinking; specifically their use of variables and expressions. This is an underexplored area on which I focus by addressing the following research question: How do sixth graders’ gestures reflect their work with indeterminate quantities and the ways in which they operate on those quantities? Specifically, the present study provides evidence that sixth grade students used gestures as embodiments of indeterminate quantities, covariation, and doubling, and that they combined gestures into embodied forms of expressions

    Inflammation and glucose homeostasis are associated with specific structural features among adults without knee osteoarthritis: a cross-sectional study from the osteoarthritis initiative.

    Background: Greater age and body mass index are strong risk factors for osteoarthritis (OA). Older and overweight individuals may be more susceptible to OA because these factors alter tissue turnover in menisci, articular cartilage, and bone via altered glucose homeostasis and inflammation. Understanding the role of inflammation and glucose homeostasis on structural features of early-stage OA may help identify therapeutic targets to delay or prevent the onset of OA among subsets of adults with these features. We examined if serum concentrations of glucose homeostasis (glucose, glycated serum protein [GSP]) or inflammation (C-reactive protein [CRP]) were associated with prevalent knee bone marrow lesions (BMLs) or effusion among adults without knee OA.Keywords: Bone marrow lesions, Effusion, Magnetic resonance imaging, Osteoarthritis.Springer Open

    Prevention of disease progression in Leishmania infantum-infected dogs with dietary nucleotides and active hexose correlated compound.

    Background: The prevalence of Leishmania infantum infection in clinically healthy dogs can be several times higher than that of clinical disease in endemic areas. Although treatment is not recommended in dogs with subclinical infection, these animals should be managed to prevent disease progression and parasite transmission to human beings or to other dogs. Dietary nucleotides and active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) have been shown to modulate the immune response. A recent study in dogs with clinical leishmaniosis receiving an initial 28-day course of methylglucamine antimoniate showed that six-month administration of a dietary supplement containing nucleotides plus AHCC achieves similar efficacy to allopurinol. Since the type of immune response plays a key role in the evolution of patients with leishmaniosis, the present study was aimed at evaluating the preventive effect of this supplement in avoiding or delaying disease progression in clinically healthy Leishmania-infected dogs.Keywords: Leishmania infantum infection, Disease progression, Canine leishmaniosis, Dietary nucleotides, AHCC, Clinically healthy infected dogs, Disease control.Springer Open
