Data Release: Parental Investment in Children’s Education. A TREE2 mixed methods study. Technical Report. Version 2.
PICE is an in-depth study of TREE that deals with the educational pathways of young adults and is particularly interested in how they are accompanied by their families on their way to working life: PICE analyses what educational aspirations young people in Switzerland have and how they are supported by their parents. This technical report provides an overview of the theoretical framework of PICE, the research questions, and the study design of the mixed method study PICE. It also documents the data collection and processing, the structure of the data, and the relationship to the TREE study (Transitions from Education to Employment)
Reliability between the two-colour chewing gum and the gummy-jelly tests used for the assessment of masticatory performance.
OBJECTIVE
This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of two methods used to assess masticatory performance and attempt to correlate them to achieve interchangeability between the methods.
METHODS
Twelve healthy dentate volunteers (men = 6, women = 6; mean age = 28.3 ± 4.1) with no known dental or medical pathologies were requested to participate in this study. Each participant completed three masticatory performance assessments, including two two-colour mixing-ability tests using chewing-gums (CG: gum#1 and gum#2) and the gummy-jelly (GJ) test. For each method, participants created five samples each (total = 15 measurements per participant, gum#1 = 5, gum#2 = 5, GJ = 5). For the gum#1 and gum#2 methods, the predetermined chewing cycles were fixed at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 cycles, and for the GJ method, the time duration was fixed at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 s. The parameter measures were submitted to Z-score transformation, and Bland-Altman plots were generated to graphically compare the differences between two techniques against their means. Additionally, mountain plot was used to assess the cumulative distribution of measurement error between the methods.
RESULTS
A total of 180 measurements were recorded. There were significant correlations between the number of chewing cycles/chewing time and masticatory performance using the gum#1 (r = -.753; p < .001), gum#2 (r = -.838; p < .001) and GJ (r = .730). When all tests were considered together for each method, significant correlations were found (p < .001). A descriptive range of mean values aiming to produce reference value ranges for predictive purposes was achieved considering the interchangeably among the methods [CG = GJ (VoH-mg = dL): 10 cycle = 10 s: 0.329 = 110; 15 cycles = 15 s: 0.177 = 164; 20 cycles = 20 s: 0.130 = 205; 25 cycles = 25 s: 0.086 = 200; 30 cycles = 30 s: 0.077 = 267].
CONCLUSION
The strong correlations and high consistency between the two masticatory performance methods found in this study conclude that the two assessment methods are reliable and interchangeable. Further evaluations are warranted to arrive at a conversion formula for translation of the results between the two methods
IELSG38: phase II trial of front-line chlorambucil plus subcutaneous rituximab induction and maintenance in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma.
The IELSG38 trial was conducted to investigate the effects of subcutaneous (SC) rituximab on the complete remission (CR) rate and the benefits of SC maintenance in patients with extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) who received frontline treatment with chlorambucil plus rituximab. Study treatment comprised an induction phase with chlorambucil 6 mg/m2/day orally on weeks 1-6, 9-10, 13-14, 17-18, and 21-22, and rituximab 375 mg/m2 intravenously on day 1 of weeks 1-4, and 1400 mg SC on weeks 9, 13, 17, and 21. Then, a maintenance phase followed with rituximab administered at 1400 mg SC every two months for two years. Of the 112 patients enrolled, 109 were evaluated for efficacy. The CR rates increased from 52% at the end of the induction phase to 70% upon completion of the maintenance phase. With a median follow-up of 5.8 years, the 5-year event-free, progression-free, and overall survival rates were 87% (95% CI, 78-92), 84% (95% CI, 75-89), and 93% (95% CI, 86-96), respectively. The most common grade ≥3 toxicities were neutropenia (33%) and lymphocytopenia (16%). Six patients experienced treatment-related serious adverse events, including fever of unknown origin, sepsis, pneumonia, respiratory failure, severe cerebellar ataxia, and fatal acute myeloid leukemia. The trial showed that subcutaneous rituximab did not improve the complete remission rate at the conclusion of the induction phase, which was the main endpoint. Nevertheless, SC maintenance might have facilitated long-term disease control, potentially contributing to enhanced event-free and progression-free survival
Zoonotic nematode in the city of La Plata, Argentina: Report of a case of Calodium hepaticum in Rattus rattus
This study describes a case of Calodium hepaticum (Trichinellida: Capillariidae) infection in an adult rat (Rattus
rattus) from the periurban area of the city of La Plata in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The rat was
found with neurological signs (ataxia, lethargy, and episodes of unresponsiveness) in the food storage of a goat
production facility. The liver was observed with hepatomegaly and diffuse and irregular yellowish-white spots
appearing in striae or small nodules on the external surface and inside the liver. Subsequent microscopic and
histopathological studies were performed. Eggs were observed by direct microscopy of the impression smear of
liver tissue. A multifocal granulomatous tissue reaction with different stages of fibrocellular tissue was observed
in the liver parenchyma. The granulomas contained adults and degenerated eggs delimited by an intense infiltrate
of mononuclear cells. Macro and microscopic observations and histopathological liver lesions were
compatible with C. hepaticum infection. To our knowledge, this is the first confirmation of C. hepaticum infection
in R. rattus in Argentina, increasing the host record of this parasite and a new record of distribution in goat
production systems in the country
Clinical Associations and Prognostic Value of MRI-Visible Perivascular Spaces in Patients With Ischemic Stroke or TIA.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
Visible perivascular spaces are an MRI marker of cerebral small vessel disease and might predict future stroke. However, results from existing studies vary. We aimed to clarify this through a large collaborative multicenter analysis.
METHODS
We pooled individual patient data from a consortium of prospective cohort studies. Participants had recent ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), underwent baseline MRI, and were followed up for ischemic stroke and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). Perivascular spaces in the basal ganglia (BGPVS) and perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale (CSOPVS) were rated locally using a validated visual scale. We investigated clinical and radiologic associations cross-sectionally using multinomial logistic regression and prospective associations with ischemic stroke and ICH using Cox regression.
RESULTS
We included 7,778 participants (mean age 70.6 years; 42.7% female) from 16 studies, followed up for a median of 1.44 years. Eighty ICH and 424 ischemic strokes occurred. BGPVS were associated with increasing age, hypertension, previous ischemic stroke, previous ICH, lacunes, cerebral microbleeds, and white matter hyperintensities. CSOPVS showed consistently weaker associations. Prospectively, after adjusting for potential confounders including cerebral microbleeds, increasing BGPVS burden was independently associated with future ischemic stroke (versus 0-10 BGPVS, 11-20 BGPVS: HR 1.19, 95% CI 0.93-1.53; 21+ BGPVS: HR 1.50, 95% CI 1.10-2.06; p = 0.040). Higher BGPVS burden was associated with increased ICH risk in univariable analysis, but not in adjusted analyses. CSOPVS were not significantly associated with either outcome.
DISCUSSION
In patients with ischemic stroke or TIA, increasing BGPVS burden is associated with more severe cerebral small vessel disease and higher ischemic stroke risk. Neither BGPVS nor CSOPVS were independently associated with future ICH
How loneliness increased among different age groups during COVID-19: a longitudinal analysis.
The COVID-19 pandemic entailed restrictions that hampered face-to-face interactions and social gatherings. In this paper, we examine whether loneliness increased to different extents among age groups due to these restrictions, and if these differences were mediated by specific life course conditions. Based on longitudinal data from the Swiss Household Panel, our results show that loneliness increased disproportionately among younger individuals during the pandemic. This finding aligns with the social convoy model and the socioemotional selectivity theory, which postulate a decline of social network size over the life course. It also corresponds to findings indicating a decrease in contact frequency with increasing age. Individuals aged 30 years and above experienced a lower increase in loneliness when they lived in shared households; however, this protective effect was not observed for younger individuals. Living together with a partner, being male, and not anticipating health complications in case of a COVID-19 infection moderated the increases of loneliness, but they were independent of age

DEXA-based Fat Mass with the Risk of Worsening Insulin Resistance in Adolescents: A 9-Year Temporal and Mediation Study.
CONTEXT
Surrogate measures of childhood and adolescent obesity have impaired the understanding of body composition's relationship with insulin resistance in the young population.
OBJECTIVES
We aim to examine the longitudinal associations of directly measured total fat mass, trunk fat mass, and lean mass with the risk of hyperglycaemia, hyperinsulinemia, and insulin resistance from ages 15-24 years, the mediation path through which lipids and inflammation influence insulin resistance and whether increased fat mass temporally precede insulin resistance.
METHODS
We studied 3160 adolescents from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), UK birth cohort, who had complete dual-energy Xray absorptiometry measure and fasting blood samples at age 15 years and repeated measures at ages 17- and 24-years clinic visit. Fasting glucose >6.1 mmol/L, insulin >11.78 mU/L, and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) ≥75th percentile were categorized as hyperglycaemia, hyperinsulinemia, and high insulin resistance, respectively. Longitudinal associations were examined with generalized logit-mixed effect models, whilst mediation and temporal path analyses were examined using structural equation models, adjusting for cardiometabolic and other lifestyle factors.
RESULTS
Among 3160 participants (51% female), fat mass and lean mass increased linearly in both males and females while glucose, insulin, and HOMA-IR had a U-shaped course from age 15 through 24 years. After full adjustment, each 1 kg cumulative increase in total fat mass [odds ratio 1.12 (95% confidence interval 1.11-1.13)] and trunk fat mass [1.21 (1.19-1.23)] from ages 15 through 24 years were associated with a progressively worsening risk of high insulin resistance as well as hyperglycaemia and hyperinsulinemia. The association of increased total fat mass with increased insulin resistance was partly mediated by triglycerides (9% mediation). In the temporal path analysis, higher total fat mass at age 15 years was associated with higher insulin resistance at 17 years, but not vice versa. Higher total fat mass at 17 years was bi-directionally associated with higher insulin resistance at 24 years.
CONCLUSION
Mid-adolescence may be an optimal time for interrupting the worsening fat mass-insulin resistance pathologic cycle and attenuating the risk of progressively worsening metabolic dysfunction before young adulthood
