    Shaped and filled by the Rhine Glacier: the overdeepened Tannwald Basin in southwestern Germany

    The Alpine region was shaped by repeated glaciations during the Quaternary, which led to the for- mation of overdeepened valleys and basins. These features today, hidden below the present-day land surface, host multiple stacked and nested glacial sequences and offer valuable insight into the environmental history and geomorphological evolution of the region. The project Drilling Overdeepened Alpine Valleys (DOVE) of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) is dedicated to investigating such overdeepened structures around the Alps. Within DOVE, we here focus on the Tannwald Basin in southern Germany. Situ- ated distally within the area formerly occupied by the Rhine Glacier piedmont lobe; it was shaped by multiple glaciations, yet it is located outside the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) ice extent. Previous seismic imaging and the presence of interglacial pollen sequences indicate a multi-phase infill history. The complex sedimentary architecture observed in a newly drilled core allows for comparison with seismic data and lithological evidence from other sites. On the basis of a lithofacies model that introduces 17 lithotypes, we propose that the basin fill is composed of three lithostratigraphic units that reflect the glacial history of the basin. After the erosion of the Tannwald Basin, a cold-climate, stacked basin-infill sequence recorded sedimentation of two glacial advances, before it was covered by LGM outwash. The sedimentary record includes an extensive basal glacial shear zone with deformed bedrock and several overlying diamict horizons. Further upcore, deformation structures under- score the role of gravitational processes as well as profound glaciotectonics, deforming the sediment deep within the subsurface. While the sedimentary record indicates a rather rapid infill of the depression, further age con- straints and detailed investigations of ice-contact sediments will clarify open questions regarding the temporal classification of the deposits

    Drought intensity and duration effects on morphological root traits vary across trait type and plant functional groups: a meta-analysis.

    The increasing severity and frequency of drought pose serious threats to plant species worldwide. Yet, we lack a general understanding of how various intensities of droughts affect plant traits, in particular root traits. Here, using a meta-analysis of drought experiments (997 effect sizes from 76 papers), we investigate the effects of various intensities of droughts on some of the key morphological root traits. Our results show that root length, root mean diameter, and root area decline when drought is of severe or extreme intensity, whereas severe drought increases root tissue density. These patterns are most pronounced in trees compared to other plant functional groups. Moreover, the long duration of severe drought decreases root length in grasses and root mean diameter in legumes. The decline in root length and root diameter due to severe drought in trees was independent of drought duration. Our results suggest that morphological root traits respond strongly to increasing intensity of drought, which further depends on drought duration and may vary among plant functional groups. Our meta-analysis highlights the need for future studies to consider the interactive effects of drought intensity and drought duration for a better understanding of variable plant responses to drought

    Perspectives from the 2nd International Post-Tuberculosis Symposium: mobilising advocacy and research for improved outcomes.

    In 2020, it was estimated that there were 155 million survivors of TB alive, all at risk of possible post TB disability. The 2nd International Post-Tuberculosis Symposium (Stellenbosch, South Africa) was held to increase global awareness and empower TB-affected communities to play an active role in driving the agenda. We aimed to update knowledge on post-TB life and illness, identify research priorities, build research collaborations and highlight the need to embed lung health outcomes in clinical TB trials and programmatic TB care services. The symposium was a multidisciplinary meeting that included clinicians, researchers, TB survivors, funders and policy makers. Ten academic working groups set their own goals and covered the following thematic areas: 1) patient engagement and perspectives; 2) epidemiology and modelling; 3) pathogenesis of post-TB sequelae; 4) post-TB lung disease; 5) cardiovascular and pulmonary vascular complications; 6) neuromuscular & skeletal complications; 7) paediatric complications; 8) economic-social and psychological (ESP) consequences; 9) prevention, treatment and management; 10) advocacy, policy and stakeholder engagement. The working groups provided important updates for their respective fields, highlighted research priorities, and made progress towards the standardisation and alignment of post-TB outcomes and definitions

    Neuronal current imaging of epileptic activity: An MRI study in patients with a first unprovoked epileptic seizure.

    OBJECTIVE This study evaluates the performance of the novel MRI sequence stimulus-induced rotary saturation (SIRS) to map responses to interictal epileptic activity in the human cortex. Spin-lock pulses have been applied to indirectly detect neuronal activity through magnetic field perturbations. Following initial reports about the feasibility of the method in humans and animals with epilepsy, we aimed to investigate the diagnostic yield of spin-lock MR pulses in comparison with scalp-EEG in first seizure patients. METHODS We employed a novel method for measurements of neuronal activity through the detection of a resonant oscillating field, stimulus-induced rotary saturation contrast (SIRS) at spin-lock frequencies of 120 and 240 Hz acquired at a single 3T MRI system. Within a prospective observational study, we conducted SIRS experiments in 55 patients within 7 days after a suspected first unprovoked epileptic seizure and 61 healthy control subjects. In this study, we report on the analysis of data from a single 3T MRI system, encompassing 35 first seizure patients and 31 controls. RESULTS The SIRS method was applicable in all patients and healthy controls at frequencies of 120 and 240 Hz. We did not observe any significant age- or sex-related differences. Specificity of SIRS at 120 Hz was 90.3% and 93.5% at 240 Hz. Sensitivity was 17.1% at 120 Hz and 40.0% at 240 Hz. SIGNIFICANCE SIRS targets neuronal oscillating magnetic fields in patients with epilepsy. The coupling of presaturated spins to epilepsy-related magnetic field perturbations may serve as a-at this stage experimental-diagnostic test in first seizure patients to complement EEG findings as a standard screening test. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY Routine diagnostic tests carry several limitations when applied after a suspected first seizure. SIRS is a noninvasive MRI method to enable time-sensitive diagnosis of image correlates of epileptic activity with increased sensitivity compared to routine EEG

    Unser Zugang zur Wirklichkeit wird zunehmend durch Computer geprägt. Denn mit Hilfe von Computersimulationen lässt sich virtuelle Realität (VR) erzeugen. VR hilft in der Forschung, das Wissen zu erweitern. Sie wird in der Ausbildung eingesetzt, um medizinische Eingriffe oder das Lenken eines Flugzeugs zu üben. Schließlich verschafft sie uns in Spielen Erlebnisse, die in der bekannten Realität kaum zu haben sind. Letztlich können wir aber nur dann von VR profitieren, wenn wir wirklich verstehen, was sie ist und wie sie entsteht. Und wir müssen uns ebenso darüber klarwerden, ob der Aufenthalt in ihr unser Leben wirklich besser macht. Denn von virtuellem Brot allein können wir nicht leben. Müssen wir also auch der Original Reality (OR) treu bleiben

    Since the publication of his seminal monograph "The scientific image", Bas van Fraassen is a key figure in philosophy of science. In this book, other philosophers with various outlooks critically discuss his work on theories, empiricism and philosophical stances. The book starts with a new article by van Fraassen on his preferred account of theories, the so-called semantic view. This account is now 50 years old, and van Fraassen takes this anniversary as an opportunity to review the account, its history and the philosophical discussion about it. In the main part of the book, Nancy Cartwright, Finnur Dellsén, Matthias Egg, Steven French, Michael Friedman, Milena Ivanova and Michela Massimi discuss van Fraassen's contributions to philosophy. Three chapters focus on his engagement with realism (French, Friedman, Ivanova). Others study his voluntarism (Cartwright) and his view on representation (Massimi). Finally, there are contributions about his elaboration of empiricism (Dellsén) and his proposal to consider philosophical positions as stances (Egg). The volume includes a laudatio written by Steven French and finishes with a reply by van Fraassen to his critics
