The Swiss Patrician Families between Decline and Persistence: Power Positions and Kinship Ties (1890–1957)
Contemporary educational methods in periodontology.
AIM
The 1st European Workshop on Periodontal Education in 2009 made recommendations regarding the scope of periodontal education at undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) and continuing professional development (CPD) levels, defining competencies and learning outcomes that were instrumental at the time in helping to define periodontal teaching curricula. The 19th European Workshop on Periodontology and 2nd European Consensus Workshop on Education in Periodontology (Education in Periodontology in Europe) was held in 2023 to identify changes and future developments in periodontal education (including those informed by the COVID-19 pandemic) and embracing methods and formats of periodontal teaching and training. The aim of this review was to assess current knowledge regarding education methods in periodontology, including traditional face-to-face (F2F) teaching and the move to student-centred methods, virtual learning methods and use of digital technology, as well as blended teaching and learning (including teaching delivery and assessment) at UG, PG and CPD levels.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Systematic searches were conducted to identify relevant studies from the literature. Data were extracted and descriptive summaries collated.
RESULTS
The pandemic was a major disruptor of traditional F2F teaching but provided opportunities for rapid implementation of alternative and supplementary teaching methods. Although online learning has become an integral part of periodontal education, teachers and learners alike favour some form of F2F teaching. Blended teaching and learning are feasible in many areas of periodontal education, both for knowledge and skills acquisition as well as in assessment. Student-centred methods and blended approaches such as the flipped classroom seem highly effective, and online/virtual classrooms with both synchronous and asynchronous lectures are highly valued. Learning with haptic methods and virtual reality (VR) enhances the educational experience, especially when VR is integrated with traditional methods. The quality of the teacher continues to be decisive for the best knowledge transfer in all its forms.
CONCLUSIONS
Live F2F teaching continues to be highly trusted; however, all types of student-centred and interactive forms of knowledge transfer are embraced as enhancements. While digital methods offer innovation in education, blended approaches integrating both virtual and traditional methods appear optimal to maximize the achievement of learning outcomes. All areas of periodontal education (UG, PG and CPD) can benefit from such approaches; however, more research is needed to evaluate their benefits, both for knowledge transfer and skills development, as well as in assessment
Empagliflozin for treating neutropenia and neutrophil dysfunction in 21 infants with glycogen storage disease 1b.
Empagliflozin has been successfully repurposed for treating neutropenia and neutrophil dysfunction in patients with glycogen storage disease type 1b (GSD 1b), however, data in infants are missing. We report on efficacy and safety of empagliflozin in infants with GSD 1b. This is an international retrospective case series on 21 GSD 1b infants treated with empagliflozin (total treatment time 20.6 years). Before starting empagliflozin (at a median age of 8.1 months with a median dose of 0.3 mg/kg/day) 12 patients had clinical signs and symptoms of neutrophil dysfunction. Six of these previously symptomatic patients had no further neutropenia/neutrophil dysfunction-associated findings on empagliflozin. Eight patients had no signs and symptoms of neutropenia/neutrophil dysfunction before start and during empagliflozin treatment. One previously asymptomatic individual with a horseshoe kidney developed a central line infection with pyelonephritis and urosepsis during empagliflozin treatment. Of the 10 patients who were treated with G-CSF before starting empagliflozin, this was stopped in four and decreased in another four. Eleven individuals were never treated with G-CSF. While in 17 patients glucose homeostasis remained stable on empagliflozin, four showed glucose homeostasis instability in the introductory phase. In 17 patients, no other side effects were reported, while genital (n = 2) or oral (n = 1) candidiasis and skin infection (n = 1) were reported in the remaining four. Empagliflozin had a good effect on neutropenia/neutrophil dysfunction-related signs and symptoms and a favourable safety profile in infants with GSD 1b and therefore qualifies for further exploration as first line treatment
Test-retest reliability of resting-state cerebral blood flow quantification using pulsed Arterial Spin Labeling (PASL) over 3 weeks vs 8 weeks in healthy controls.
Arterial Spin Labeling is a valuable functional imaging tool for both clinical and research purposes. However, little is known about the test-retest reliability of cerebral blood flow measurements over longer periods. In this study, we investigated the reliability of pulsed Arterial Spin Labeling in assessing cerebral blood flow over a 3 (n = 28) vs 8 (n = 19) weeks interscan interval in 47 healthy participants. As a measure of cerebral blood flow reliability, we calculated voxel-wise, whole-brain, and regions of interest intraclass correlation coefficients. The whole-brain mean resting-state cerebral blood flow showed good to excellent reliability over time for both periods (intraclass correlation coefficients = 0.85 for the 3-week delay, intraclass correlation coefficients = 0.53 for the 8-week delay). However, the voxel-wise and regions of interest intraclass correlation coefficients fluctuated at 8-week compared to the 3-week interval, especially within cortical areas. These results confirmed previous findings that Arterial Spin Labeling could be used as a reliable method to assess brain perfusion. However, as the reliability seemed to decrease over time, caution is warranted when performing correlations with other variables, especially in clinical populations

The project European Religious Peace Agreements – A Digital Edition (EuReD) is a long-term project in the Academies’ Program of the Union of German Academies, which focuses on the period after the European religious wars and is based on various already existing editions. It aims to lay the foundation for further research in religious studies, cultural studies, linguistics, and history. By reprocessing and re-using data and tools from previous projects, the long-term project represents a remarkable FAIR Data use case. Through solid editorial craftsmanship and the avoidance of visual or technical novelties, the project itself is geared toward long-term usability. By making the worked-upon documents accessible from the early funding phase, the project embraces openness and provides insight into the editorial process. Expectedly, there are gaps and ambiguities, which – at this early stage – are unavoidable and are mentioned by the reviewers in favor of the project’s further development rather than to point out definite weaknesses
Social determinants of antidepressant continuation during pregnancy in the USA: findings from the ABCD cohort study.
PURPOSE
Patients and healthcare professionals overestimate the risks of using antidepressants during pregnancy. According to current literature, approximately half of people stop taking an anti-depressant medication when they become pregnant. Discontinuing antidepressants during pregnancy increases risks of postnatal relapses. Factors like socioeconomic status, education, and planned pregnancies play a role in the decision to continue antidepressant medication, which can worsen disparities in maternal and child health. Our aim was to identify the sociodemographic factors associated with antidepressant continuation after awareness of pregnancy.
METHODS
We used representative data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study that captures maternal medication during pregnancy. We identified women who used antidepressants before awareness of their pregnancy. We calculated crude and adjusted associations between sociodemographic factors and continuation of antidepressant medication during pregnancy. Our model included age, education, ethnicity, first language, household income, living with a partner, having planned the pregnancy, pregnancy duration and smoking during pregnancy.
RESULTS
In total, 199 women continued antidepressants and 100 discontinued. The logistic regressions resulted in only one significant factor: first language. Native English speakers were more likely to continue medication than other mothers (adjusted OR = 14.94, 95% CI = [2.40; 291.45], p = .015).
CONCLUSIONS
Language differences were associated with continuation of antidepressants. Non-native English speakers were more likely to discontinue antidepressants, which may lead to health inequities. This finding should be taken into account to reinforce information about the limited risks of antidepressants among people with non-English speaking backgrounds in the USA

Commoning the compact city: The role of old and new commons in urban development
Although densification is generally seen to contribute to more sustainable urban development, it is often linked to market-oriented and for-profit development, contributing to the enclosure of urban space. We analyse how densification can take a different path through processes of commoning. We particularly aim to understand how commoning initiatives can contribute to new institutional arrangements that counteract enclosure and commodification in densification. We furthermore aim to contribute to conceptual clarity in the debate on urban commons by emphasizing the different roles of so-called ‘old’ and ‘new’ commons in urban development. Our analytical framework builds on a new institutionalist approach which stresses the analysis of localized and temporary institutional arrangements negotiated among actors in a given situation. We rely on a detailed case-study of a densification project in the city of Bern (Switzerland), where publicly-owned land was redeveloped into cooperative housing and urban green space. Our findings show how densification leads to a transition phase in which institutional arrangements defining land uses and allocating access and use rights are renegotiated. These are crucial moments where processes of commoning can shape the outcome of densification, although not independently from the supportive action of the public actor. We underline the potential of new commons, even when typically transitional, unstable, and temporary. Contrary to old commons, their potential lies not so much in the ability for long-lasting resource management, but rather in the capacity to change the conditions of governance during the transition between land uses, advancing more socially-sustainable outcomes in a key moment of the urban redevelopment process
Fabrication trueness and internal fit of different lithium disilicate ceramics according to post-milling firing and material type.
OBJECTIVES
To evaluate whether post-milling firing and material type affect the fabrication trueness and internal fit of lithium disilicate crowns.
METHODS
A prefabricated cobalt chromium abutment was digitized to design a mandibular right first molar crown. This design file was used to fabricate crowns from different lithium disilicate ceramics (nano-lithium disilicate (AM), fully crystallized lithium disilicate (IN), advanced lithium disilicate (TS), and lithium disilicate (EX)) (n = 10). Crowns, the abutment, and the crowns when seated on the abutment were digitized by using an intraoral scanner. Fabrication trueness was assessed by using the root mean square method, while the internal fit was evaluated according to the triple scan method. These processes were repeated after the post-milling firing of AM, TS, and EX. Paired samples t-tests were used to analyze the effect of post-milling firing within AM, TS, and EX, while all materials were compared with 1-way analysis of variance and Tukey HSD tests (α = 0.05).
RESULTS
Post-milling firing reduced the surface deviations and internal gap of AM and EX (P ≤ 0.014). AM mostly had higher deviations and internal gaps than other materials (P ≤ 0.030).
CONCLUSIONS
Post-milling firing increased the trueness and internal fit of tested nano-lithium disilicate and lithium disilicate ceramics. Nano-lithium disilicate mostly had lower trueness and higher internal gap; however, the maximum meaningful differences among tested materials were small. Therefore, the adjustment duration and clinical fit of tested crowns may be similar.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Tested lithium disilicate ceramics may be suitable alternatives to one another in terms of fabrication trueness and internal fit, considering the small differences in measured deviations and internal gaps
