    ICP-MS Assisted EDX Tomography: A Robust Method for Studying Electrolyte Penetration Phenomena in Gas Diffusion Electrodes Applied to CO2 Electrolysis.

    A carbon paper-based gas diffusion electrode (GDE) is used with a bismuth(III) subcarbonate active catalyst phase for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 in a gas/electrolyte flow-by configuration electrolyser at high current density. It is demonstrated that in this configuration, the gas and catholyte phases recombine to form K2CO3/KHCO3 precipitates to an extent that after electrolyses, vast amount of K+ ions is found by EDX mapping in the entire GDE structure. The fact that the entirety of the GDE gets wetted during electrolysis should, however, not be interpreted as a sign of flooding of the catalyst layer, since electrolyte perspiring through the GDE can largely be removed with the outflow gas, and the efficiency of electrolysis (toward the selective production of formate) can thus be maintained high for several hours. For a full spatial scale quantitative monitoring of electrolyte penetration into the GDE, (relying on K+ ions as tracer) the method of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) assisted energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) tomography is introduced. This new, cheap and robust tomography of non-uniform aspect ratio has a large planar span that comprises the entire GDE surface area and a submicrometer depth resolution, hence it can provide quantitative information about the amount and distribution of K+ remnants inside the GDE structure, in three dimensions

    A Neuronal Network-Based Score Predicting Survival in Patients Undergoing Aortic Valve Intervention: The ABC-AS Score.

    Background: Despite being the most commonly performed valvular intervention, risk prediction for aortic valve replacement in patients with severe aortic stenosis by currently used risk scores remains challenging. The study aim was to develop a biomarker-based risk score by means of a neuronal network. Methods: In this multicenter study, 3595 patients were divided into test and validation cohorts (70% to 30%) by random allocation. Input variables to develop the ABC-AS score were age, the cardiac biomarker high-sensitivity troponin T, and a patient history of cardiac decompensation. The validation cohort was used to verify the scores' value and for comparison with the Society of Thoracic Surgery Predictive Risk of Operative Mortality score. Results: Receiver operating curves demonstrated an improvement in prediction by using the ABC-AS score compared to the Society of Thoracic Surgery Predictive Risk of Operative Mortality (STS prom) score. Although the difference in predicting cardiovascular mortality was most notable at 30-day follow-up (area under the curve of 0.922 versus 0.678), ABC-AS also performed better in overall follow-up (0.839 versus 0.699). Furthermore, univariate analysis of ABC-AS tertiles yielded highly significant differences for all-cause (p < 0.0001) and cardiovascular mortality (p < 0.0001). Head-to-head comparison between both risk scores in a multivariable cox regression model underlined the potential of the ABC-AS score (HR per z-unit 2.633 (95% CI 2.156-3.216), p < 0.0001), while the STS prom score failed to reach statistical significance (p = 0.226). Conclusions: The newly developed ABC-AS score is an improved risk stratification tool to predict cardiovascular outcomes for patients undergoing aortic valve intervention

    Identifying pesticides of high concern for ecosystem, plant, animal, and human health: A comprehensive field study across Europe and Argentina.

    The widespread and excessive use of pesticides in modern agricultural practices has caused pesticide contamination of the environment, animals, and humans, with confirmed serious health consequences. This study aimed to identify the 20 most critical substances based on an analysis of detection frequency (DF) and median concentrations (MC) across environmental and biological matrices. A sampling campaign was conducted across 10 case study sites in Europe and 1 in Argentina, each encompassing conventional and organic farming systems. We analysed 209 active substances in a total of 4609 samples. All substances ranked among the 20 most critical were detected in silicon wristbands worn by humans and animals and indoor dust from both farming systems. Five of them were detected in all environmental matrices. Overall, higher values of DF and MC, including in the blood plasma of animals and humans, were recorded in samples of conventional compared to organic farms. The differences between farming systems were greater in the environmental samples and less in animal and human samples. Ten substances were detected in animal blood plasma from conventional farms and eight in animal blood plasma from organic farms. Two of those, detected in both farming systems, are classified as hazardous for mammals (acute). Five substances detected in animal blood plasma from organic farms and seven detected in animal blood plasma from conventional farms are classified as hazardous for mammals (dietary). Three substances detected in human blood plasma are classified as carcinogens. Seven of the substances detected in human blood plasma are classified as endocrine disruptors. Six substances, of which five were detected in human blood plasma, are hazardous for reproduction/development. Efforts are needed to elucidate the unknown effects of mixtures, and it is crucial that such research also considers biocides and banned substances, which constitute a baseline of contamination that adds to the effect of substances used in agriculture

    Seroprevalence of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in Swiss dairy herds and risk factors for a positive herd status and within-herd prevalence.

    INTRODUCTION Bovine paratuberculosis (PTB) is a chronic enteric disease caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). Control of PTB is important given its negative economic consequences and the potential zoonotic role of MAP in Crohn's disease in humans. METHODS To determine the seroprevalence of MAP in Swiss dairy herds and to identify risk factors associated with seropositive herd status and high within-herd seroprevalence, 10,063 serum samples collected from cattle over 12 months of age in 171 Swiss dairy farms were analyzed using a commercial ELISA test. Eight herds were excluded due to non-interpretable ELISA results. Risk factors associated with seropositive herd status and high within-herd seroprevalence were investigated with regression models using results from a questionnaire on management practices possibly associated with the introduction or spread of MAP in the remaining 163 herds. Univariable logistic regression was performed, carrying forward for multivariable regression analysis when p < 0.2. RESULTS The calculated between-herd true seroprevalence was 3.6% (95% CI, 0.96-8.4%). Due to the low within-herd seroprevalence, it was not possible to calculate the true seroprevalence at animal level; the apparent within-herd seroprevalence ranged from 2.3 to 5.5% with a median of 3.6% in nine positive farms. Herd size (p = 0.037) and the common grazing of lactating cows with cows from other herds (p = 0.014) were associated with seropositive herd status, while heifers sharing alpine pasture with dairy cattle from other herds were associated with a decreased probability of the herd to test seropositive (p = 0.042). Reliable identification of significant risk factors associated with MAP spread and high seroprevalence of PTB within seropositive herds was not possible due to low observed seroprevalence within herds and low sensitivity of the ELISA test. DISCUSSION These results highlight the limitation of serology for MAP diagnosis in small herds with low infection prevalence

    Gastric band removal: mind the arterial anastomoses!

    Bariatric surgery may sometimes be challenging and may lead to severe complications. Surgical re-intervention in such cases is not the preferred option due to co-morbidities. When severe bleeding occurs, embolization of the lacerated vessels is the preferred minimal invasive management option and needs to be available if possible. We would like to report a case of young patient who underwent severe bleeding after migration of a gastric band. The patient was successfully embolized and the band was removed. However, on the second post-operative day, the patient complained again for acute abdominal pain and turned haemodynamically unstable. Fresh blood was aspirated from the surgical drain. A new emergency CT scan was performed and a new large pseudoaneurysm was revealed taking origin from the left gastric artery. The second bleeding occurred due to an anastomotic communication and was also successfully embolized. The main take home messages are that bariatric surgery may lead to several complications including bleeding, gastric band may cause vessel erosion but also offer a tamponade effect, endovascular embolization of the lacerated vessels is the preferred management and pseudoaneurysms arising in hepato-splenic or gastroduodenal arteries should be treated with the sandwich embolization technique

    Physiological audience synchrony in classical concerts linked with listeners' experiences and attitudes.

    A series of eleven public concerts (staging chamber music by Ludwig van Beethoven, Brett Dean, Johannes Brahms) was organized with the goal to analyze physiological synchronies within the audiences and associations of synchrony with psychological variables. We hypothesized that the music would induce synchronized physiology, which would be linked to participants' aesthetic experiences, affect, and personality traits. Physiological measures (cardiac, electrodermal, respiration) of 695 participants were recorded during presentations. Before and after concerts, questionnaires provided self-report scales and standardized measures of participants' affectivity, personality traits, aesthetic experiences and listening modes. Synchrony was computed by a cross-correlational algorithm to obtain, for each participant and physiological variable (heart rate, heart-rate variability, respiration rate, respiration, skin-conductance response), how much each individual participant contributed to overall audience synchrony. In hierarchical models, such synchrony contribution was used as the dependent and the various self-report scales as predictor variables. We found that physiology throughout audiences was significantly synchronized, as expected with the exception of breathing behavior. There were links between synchrony and affectivity. Personality moderated the synchrony levels: Openness was positively associated, Extraversion and Neuroticism negatively. Several factors of experiences and listening modes predicted synchrony. Emotional listening was associated with reduced, whereas both structual and sound-focused listening was associated with increased synchrony. We concluded with an updated, nuanced understanding of synchrony on the timescale of whole concerts, inviting elaboration by synchony studies on shorter timescales of music passages

    Dynamic evaluation of corneal cross-linking and osmotic diffusion effects using optical coherence elastography.

    Dynamic deformation events induced by osmosis or photochemical stiffening substantially influence geometrical and mechanical assessments in post-mortem corneas, therefore need to be carefully monitored in experimental settings. In this study, we employed optical coherence elastography (OCE) to quantify dynamic deformation processes at high resolution in freshly enucleated porcine corneas. Osmotic effects were studied by immerging n = 9 eyes in preservation media of three different tonicities. Dynamic processes underlying corneal cross-linking (CXL) were studied by subjecting n = 6 eyes to standard Dresden treatment, while three control groups were used. The entire procedures were performed under an OCE setup during up to 80 min, acquiring a volumetric scan every 20 s. Changes in OCE-derived axial deformations were incrementally calculated between consecutive scans. Preservation conditions had a strong influence on the observed strain patterns, which were consistent with the tonicity of the medium (swelling in hypotonic, deswelling in hypertonic environment). In the CXL group, we observed deswelling of the anterior stroma 10 min after starting the UV irradiation, which was not observed in any control group (p = 0.007). The presented results proved OCE to be a valuable technique to quantify subtle dynamic biomechanical alterations in the cornea resulting from CXL and preservation solutions

    Odor cues rather than personality affect tadpole deposition in a neotropical poison frog.

    Animals constantly need to evaluate available external and internal information to make appropriate decisions. Identifying, assessing, and acting on relevant cues in contexts such as mate choice, intra-sexual competition, and parental care is particularly important for optimizing individual reproductive success. Several factors can influence decision-making, such as external environmental cues and the animal's own internal state, yet, we have limited knowledge on how animals integrate available information. Here, we used an entire island population (57 males, 53 females, and 1,109 tadpoles) of the neotropical brilliant-thighed poison frog Allobates femoralis to investigate how 2 factors (olfactory cues and personality traits) influence the ability of males to find and use new resources for tadpole deposition. We experimentally manipulated the location of tadpole deposition sites and their associated olfactory cues, and repeatedly measured exploration and boldness in adult males. We further reconstructed tadpole deposition choices via inferred parent-offspring relationships of adult frogs and tadpoles deposited in our experimental pools using molecular parentage analysis. We found that the discovery and use of new rearing sites were heavily influenced by olfactory cues; however, we did not find an effect of the measured behavioral traits on resource discovery and use. We conclude that in highly dynamic environments such as tropical rainforests, reliable external cues likely take priority over personality traits, helping individuals to discover and make use of reproductive resources
