    Classification systems for chronic pelvic pain in males: a systematic review

    Objective To systematically review the classification systems for male chronic pelvic pain (CPP). Methods The Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Excerpta Medica dataBASE (EMBASE), and Web of Science were searched. Any publication, with no restriction to publication date, was eligible. Publications had to propose a classification system for CPP in males or provide additional information of a system that had been identified. Systems were assessed with an adapted Critical Appraisal of Classification Systems tool. Results A total of 33 relevant publications were identified, with 22 proposing an original classification system. Systems aimed to: (i) diagnose CPP and/or differentially diagnose CPP from other conditions, (ii) differentially diagnose subtypes within CPP, or (iii) identify features that could inform underlying mechanisms and/or treatment selection. Conditions referred to as chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome and interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome were most represented. Clinical signs/symptoms, pathoanatomical investigations, and presumed pain mechanisms were used for classification. Quality of systems was low to moderate, implying limitations to consider for their interpretation. Conclusions Many classification systems for CPP in males exist. Careful consideration of their intended purpose is required. Future work should examine whether outcomes for patients are improved when decisions are guided by their use

    Implementing a gerontological nursing competencies programme in aged care:Participant experiences

    Aims: To explore the experience of registered nurses and their mentors in the implementation of the Gerontological Nursing Competencies in long-term aged care and the perceived effectiveness and suitability of the programme to support nurse development. Background: The global population is ageing and needs a reliable aged-care nursing workforce. Introduction: Opportunities for education and mentorship for newly qualified and experienced aged-care nurses warrant investigation. Methods: Qualitative evaluation using semi-structured focus groups was conducted following the implementation of the programme into five not-for-profit long-term aged-care organisations and analysed by a reflexive qualitative thematic approach and reported according to COREQ criteria. Results: A total of 21 nurses (7 mentors and 14 mentees) participated in six focus groups. Five themes were generated: (1) nurses gained confidence and competence through the programme; (2) the facilitation of suitable mentoring activities and approaches was crucial to success; (3) the programme helps nurses recognise gerontology as a specialty; (4) the programme contributes to building a strategy of recruitment/retention/quality improvement in the sector; (5) barriers, challenges, changes and recommendations were identified. Discussion: The Gerontological Nursing Competency model, which combined adaptive mentoring supported by reflective practice embedded in a gerontological nursing competencies framework, was perceived to improve nurse confidence and competence to lead and improve nursing standards of care. Conclusion and implications for nursing and health policy: The evidence-based competencies are an acceptable and effective method for supporting gerontological nurse development. Expansion of, and accessibility to, the programme may aid global responses to aged-care reform, by building the recognition of gerontological nursing as a specialty and contributing towards recruitment, retention and quality care improvements.</p

    MIP-GAF: A MLLM-annotated Benchmark for Important Person Localization and Group Context Understanding

    Estimating the Most Important Person (MIP) in any social event setup is a challenging problem mainly due to contextual complexity and scarcity of labeled data. Moreover, the causality aspects of MIP estimation are quite subjective and diverse. To this end, we aim to address the problem by annotating a large-scale `in-the-wild' dataset for identifying human perceptions about the `Most Important Person (MIP)' in an image. The paper provides a thorough description of our proposed Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) based data annotation strategy, and a thorough data quality analysis. Further, we perform a comprehensive benchmarking of the proposed dataset utilizing state-of-the-art MIP localization methods, indicating a significant drop in performance compared to existing datasets. The performance drop shows that the existing MIP localization algorithms must be more robust with respect to `in-the-wild' situations. We believe the proposed dataset will play a vital role in building the next-generation social situation understanding methods.     Changing Nature of Consumer Values Toward Negative Word of Mouth:Voice and Risk Avoidance as Moderators

    Given the increasing role of word of mouth (WOM), and primarily the impact of negative WOM on the decision-making of today's retail consumers, it is essential to understand the changing nature of consumer values (monetary, functional, emotional and social), emotion and attitude toward negative WOM. The current study's data were collected using two online surveys in 2015 and 2019, with 290 participants in Study 1 and 201 in Study 2. The intention behind using two different time points over a 4-year span was to capture the differences in consumers' views over the two periods. The study's findings suggested that social and emotional values remained unchanged; however, monetary and functional values changed over time. Interestingly, attitudes altered toward complaining, although the relationships between taking external action and negative WOM were unchanged in both studies. Consumers raising their voice and consumers' risk-taking attributes were found to be significant moderators in Study 1 but not in Study 2. The findings provide useful insights into the negative WOM literature and have implications for marketing practitioners, as highlighted in the paper's conclusion.</p

    Social media influencers and political influence operations: The Data Boys example in Nigeria

    This study examines how ‘Data Boys’ covertly used social media platforms to promote, rehabilitate and sustain the image of political leaders in Nigeria. Data for this study are from an online qualitative survey of 25 social media influencers in Nigeria. Three broad themes (hyping a politician, remuneration and results) emerged from the data. Results reveal that Data Boys promote their political leaders by equivocation of identities, exaggerating the performance of their principals, falsifying corruption allegations against their principals’ competitor and concealing the transgressions of their principals. The paper conceptualises the rise of Data Boys in Nigeria’s political sphere and highlights ways through which they execute their online operations. The study argues that instead of using their networked communicative power for factual debate and respectful dialogues, that the Data Boys have been used as vehicles for covert message dissemination and other sponsored contents which could potentially go against public interest. The study concludes that the posture of Data Boys is inimical to public relations practice as their overtly negative and monolithic view of online influence cheapens the significance of social media influencer praxis and electioneering campaigns in Nigeria

    The Walk of Guilt: Multimodal Deception Detection from Nonverbal Motion Behaviour

    Detecting deceptive behaviour for surveillance and border protection is critical for a country’s security. With the advancement of technology in relation to sensors and artificial intelligence, recognising deceptive behaviour could be performed automatically. Following the success of affective computing in emotion recognition from verbal and nonverbal cues, we aim to apply a similar concept for deception detection. Recognising deceptive behaviour has been attempted; however, only a few studies have analysed this behaviour from gait and body movement. This research involves a multimodal approach for deception detection from gait, where we fuse features extracted from body movement behaviours from a video signal, acoustic features from walking steps from an audio signal, and the dynamics of walking movement using an accelerometer sensor. Using the video recording of walking from the Whodunnit deception dataset, which contains 49 subjects performing scenarios that elicit deceptive behaviour, we conduct multimodal two-category (guilty/not guilty) subject-independent classification. The classification results obtained reached an accuracy of up to 88% through feature fusion, with an average of 60% from both single and multimodal signals. Analysing body movement using single modality showed that the visual signal had the highest performance followed by the accelerometer and acoustic signals. Several fusion techniques were explored, including early, late, and hybrid fusion, where hybrid fusion not only achieved the highest classification results, but also increased the confidence of the results. Moreover, using a systematic framework for selecting the most distinguishing features of guilty gait behaviour, we were able to interpret the performance of our models. From these baseline results, we can conclude that pattern recognition techniques could help in characterising deceptive behaviour, where future work will focus on exploring the tuning and enhancement of the results and techniques

    Evaluating student understanding of core pharmacokinetic concepts

    Both educators and graduates have expressed concern about a perceived pharmacology knowledge gap that includes difficulty applying fundamental principles to clinical and research problems. Consequently, we sought to determine the extent to which current students can explain the meaning of, and appropriately apply, a subset of core concepts, and to identify any misconceptions arising from the responses. Of the twenty-four pharmacology core concepts arising from the recent international collaboration, four pharmacokinetic concepts were chosen, namely drug bioavailability, drug clearance, volume of distribution, and steady-state concentration. A total of 318 students from 11 universities across seven countries chose to participate in this study. Expert analysts identified the essential elements for each concept, then independently assessed each student's response. Teams of two experts compared their evaluations to reach a consensus and grouped misconceptions thematically. For each core concept, less than 30% of students provided responses that encompassed all essential elements. Participants found drug clearance most challenging, generally conflating it with the rate of elimination, whereas they demonstrated a better understanding of drug bioavailability. There were 34 misconception themes coded in a total of 813 statements, with volume of distribution and drug clearance producing the highest numbers (13 and 12, respectively). Overall, results suggest that students found it easier to apply the concept than to explain its meaning, which might reflect the shift from didactic to active learning approaches. These findings may be useful for educators who are developing introductory pharmacokinetic courses by providing conceptual focus and revealing common misconceptions to explicitly address.</p
