A Survey on the Effectiveness of Existing Smart Home Cyber Attacks Detection Solution: A Broadband Service Providers’ Perspective
The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly reshaping smart homes with innovative technologies for everyday convenience. Although smart home technologies are becoming more popular, many homeowners lack the expertise and skills to operate them. Particularly mismanaged networking technologies often result in homeowners complaining to their Broadband Service Providers (BSPs) when there are disruptions to the performance of the smart home devices and services. Current remote management solutions used by BSPs offer limited functionality and accuracy in identifying the causes of these disruptions. Causes may include legitimate factors, such as misconfiguration, interference, and congestion, but they could also be the result of cyber attacks. This review exposes knowledge gaps that impede the development of effective troubleshooting tools (particularly related to cyber attacks) for BSPs, including network-related challenges and dataset limitations. We also discuss future research directions, emphasising scalable and data-efficient methods to reduce storage requirements, costs, and privacy concerns, which will enable BSPs to manage millions of customer networks more effectively.</p

Gate Control Mechanisms of Autoencoders for EEG Signal Reconstruction
Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive and portable way to capture neurophysiological activity, which provides the basis for brain–computer interface systems and more innovative applications, from entertainment to security. However, the acquisition of EEG signals often suffers from noise contamination and even signal interruption problems due to poor contact of the electrodes, body movement, or heavy noise. Such heavily contaminated and lost signal segments are usually removed manually, which can hinder practical system deployment and application performance, especially in scenarios where continuous signals are required. In our previous work, we proposed the weighted gate layer autoencoder (WGLAE) and demonstrated its effectiveness in learning dependencies in EEG time series and encoding relationships among EEG channels. The WGLAE adopts a gate layer to encourage the AE to approximate multiple relationships simultaneously by controlling the data flow of each input variable. However, it only applies a sequential control scheme without taking into account the physical meaning of EEG channel locations. In this study, we investigate the gating mechanism for WGLAE and validate the importance of having a proper gating scheme for learning relationships between EEG channels. To this end, several gate control mechanisms are designed that embed EEG channel locations and their corresponding underlying physical meanings. The influences introduced by the proposed gate control mechanisms are examined on an open dataset with different scales and associated with various stimuli. The experimental results suggest that the gating mechanisms have varying influences on reconstructing EEG signals
Quantifying the Sensitivity of Targeted eDNA Surveys to Improve Detection of Invasive Cane Toads (Rhinella marina)
Environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys are increasingly used to monitor biodiversity because they are often more sensitive (have higher detection probability) than conventional monitoring methods. Sensitivity is a key consideration in designing monitoring programs because it determines the survey effort (e.g., number of samples per site) required to achieve a given likelihood of detecting a species. However, assessing the sensitivity of eDNA surveys and examining the factors influencing this in the field remain understudied. Here, we quantify the importance of key factors likely to influence eDNA sensitivity and compare the results of eDNA surveys to conventional visual surveys for detecting invasive cane toads (Rhinella marina) in northern Australia. We sampled waterbodies across the invasion front and showed that both eDNA and visual surveys had similar performance in detecting cane toads. Environmental DNA sensitivity varied predictably across waterbodies as a function of several factors. Sensitivity was higher: (1) when a greater volume of water was sampled at a water body; (2) at waterbodies with higher toad densities; (3) at smaller waterbodies; and (4) when cane toad tadpoles were present. We show how these findings can be used to tailor survey effort to ensure a specified level of detection probability at individual waterbodies, for example, by scaling the number of samples taken to water body size and tadpole presence/absence. Our study highlights the value of quantitatively assessing the sensitivity of eDNA surveys in the field and understanding the factors influencing sensitivity to achieve monitoring objectives.</p

Co-creating inclusive public services with customers experiencing vulnerability
Purpose: Service inclusion empowers customers to self-determine their life and future. Using the motivation-opportunity-ability framework and a strengths-based approach to vulnerability, this study aims to examine the lived experience of secondary school students experiencing vulnerability to better understand how they are motivated, provided the opportunity and able to co-create an inclusive mass public education service. Design/methodology/approach: Twenty secondary school students who attend high school in a low socioeconomic area undertook semi-structured interviews and co-design activities to investigate how customers experiencing vulnerability co-create value in public secondary education services. This grounded theory approach used inductive-deductive thematic analysis to analyse interviews transcript and data artefacts from the co-design activities. Findings: The results show that customers experiencing vulnerability in public secondary education services are intrinsically motivated to co-create inclusive services. Customers provided with opportunities to co-create will use their agency to drive co-creation, perceiving that they are competent to co-create when drawing on past practices and being facilitated by structured freedom. Co-creation is supported by a sense of belonging but impeded by a range of micro-, meso- and macro-level barriers. Customers that co-create inclusive services are subsequently more likely to exhibit engagement. Originality/value: This research provides empirical evidence to support transformative service research theorising that enabling opportunities and offering choice leads to more inclusive service experiences for customers experiencing vulnerability. Perceptions of service captivity can also be improved by co-creation.</p
The assessment of physiotherapy practice is a robust measure of entry-level physiotherapy standards:Reliability and validity evidence from a large, representative sample
The Assessment of Physiotherapy Practice (APP) is a 20-item assessment instrument used to assess entry-level physiotherapy practice in Australia, New Zealand and other international locations. Initial APP reliability and validity evidence supported a unidimensional or single latent factor as the best representation of entry-level physiotherapy practice performance. However, there remains inconsistency in how the APP is interpreted and operationalised across Australian and New Zealand universities offering entry-level physiotherapy programs. In essence, the presumption that the psychometric integrity of the APP generalises across people, time, and contexts remains largely untested. This multi-site, archival replication study utilised APP assessment data from 8,979 clinical placement assessments, across 19 Australian and New Zealand universities, graduating entry-level physiotherapy students (n=1865) in 2019. Structural representation of APP scores were examined via confirmatory factor analysis and penalised structural equation models. Factor analyses indicated a 2-factor representation, with four items (1-4) for the professional dimension and 16 items (5-20) for the clinical dimension, is the best approximation of entry-level physiotherapy performance. Measurement invariance analyses supported the robustness of this 2-factor representation over time and across diverse practice areas in both penultimate and final years of study.The findings provide strong evidence for the psychometric integrity of the APP, and the 2-factor alternative interpretation and operationalisation is recommended. To meet entry-level standards students should be assessed as competent across both professional and clinical dimensions of physiotherapy practice.</p
A Habit-Forming Exercise Approach Promotes Positive Exercise Beliefs and Behaviours: A Survey of People After Stroke
Background and Aims LiFE is a habit-forming functional exercise program that is not widely used in stroke but could facilitate exercise and support long-term physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine, in people after stroke participating in the Falls After Stroke Trial: (1) exercise beliefs and behaviours, (2) differences between LiFE and usual care participants and (3) in LiFE participants, perceptions of the program. Methods Participants (n?=?49) were consecutively invited to complete a 43-item survey about exercise beliefs and behaviours. LiFE participants also provided program feedback. Data were analysed using descriptive and frequency analyses, Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, Fisher's exact tests and content analyses. Results Thirty-eight complete surveys (n?=?22 LiFE, n?=?16 usual care) were analysed. Participants had moderately strong outcome expectations for exercise and reported a mean (SD) of 2 (2) barriers and 2 (1) facilitators to exercise. Only 15 participants (39%) reported meeting Australian physical activity guidelines, of which most (67%) received LiFE. More LiFE than usual care participants were confident in overcoming barriers to exercise (62% vs. 33%, p?=?0.18) and satisfied with their reported physical activity levels (50% vs. 37%, p?=?0.41). Most LiFE participants (95%) agreed that the program made it easier for them to be more physically active and all agreed that they would continue with the program. Conclusion People after stroke in both the LiFE and usual care groups had positive views of exercise; however, most reported that they were not completing recommended physical activity levels. There appeared to be some differences in exercise beliefs and behaviours between LiFE and usual care participants, though these were not statistically significant. LiFE participants provided positive feedback about the program and reported that it could help them to engage in physical activity behaviours

BackgroundThis paper presents an analysis of the current research landscape within the Australian counselling profession, identifying key challenges and proposing a strategic approach to building research capacity.Problem StatementWritten by a taskforce of educational leaders, it reports their perceptions and experiences of the multifaceted challenges hindering research development. These challenges encompass the limited pipeline of future doctoral-trained counselling educators, the barriers to promotion opportunities for current counsellor educators, and the impact these deficits may have on the profession overall.Proposed SolutionsTo address these challenges, the paper proposes a series of targeted strategies aimed at stakeholders across the research ecosystem.ConclusionThe intention of disseminating these strategies is to support counselling professionals in other regions who may be interested in further development of their own research capacity
