    Making public or quiet listening? Media logics and public inquiries into the abuse of children

    This article examines the tensions between ‘publicness’ and ‘privacy’ in national commissions of inquiry. Through the insights of those who worked deep inside Australia's landmark Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (RCIRCSA, 2013–2017), and the evidence provided in its final report, we explore the organisational and media logics of the Commission's highly publicised public hearings, and the ‘quiet’ institutional listening practices of its private sessions and engagement with marginalised communities. Royal Commissions are an important mechanism for raising awareness of past crimes on the public agenda. Our research finds that while the revelatory outcomes of the RCIRCSA have been well documented, its private sessions, engagement and research are less well understood. We argue ‘publicness’ is a relatively unchallenged good that is enacted through news media and the royal commission process, but media logics can limit their capacity to address the ongoing causes and impacts of child sexual abuse against the most impacted children. Participants reflected on the media logics that drove strategic decisions to ‘make public’ some cases and institutions, while others remained in the Commission's private realm. The article concludes that the confidential sharing of evidence has been undervalued in inquiry media studies that often centre the journalists’ role in uncovering and publicly revealing previously unheard stories. Drawing on international comparisons we find that while quiet listening risks negating the opportunity to amplify experience, it may also counter the potential silencing effects of unwanted public media scrutiny and protect potential witnesses from further harm.</p

    The contribution of work-integrated learning to nutrition undergraduate employability skill development

    The field of nutrition has seen a growing interest and demand in recent years, with more students choosing to study within the field. This demand has highlighted the importance of producing work-ready graduates with skills that enhance their employability and ability to contribute effectively to the workforce. This study investigated the role of work-integrated learning (WIL) on improving employability skills in nutrition undergraduates (n=41) at an Australian university. Perceived skill development was determined using the Employability Skills Cluster Matrix-Self Assessment Tool (ESCM-SAT). Significant improvements were observed across all 24 employability skills post-internship, with the greatest increase in the communication cluster and ‘developing and managing my career’ (p&lt;0.01). Skill development was attributed to self-awareness, exposure to a professional environment, and mentorship. Undergraduate nutrition degrees should consider strategies to develop transferable skills and include WIL for the unique application of academic knowledge to diverse workplace settings within the industry.</p

    A Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH) Assay for Detection of HBV RNA, DNA, and cccDNA in Cell Culture

    Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is undoubtedly a master in exploiting host resources while evading host defense for its multiplication within a constrained genetic coding capacity. To further unravel these cunning strategies, a clear picture of virus-host interaction with key subcellular and molecular contexts is needed. Here, we describe a FISH protocol modified from the ViewRNA assay that allows direct visualization of HBV RNA, DNA, and cccDNA in cell culture models (e.g., HepAD38, HepG2-NTCP). It can be coupled with immunofluorescence staining of viral or host proteins or other fluorescent tagging systems which could illuminate numerous aspects of virus-host interactions.</p

    A Multilayer Doyle-Fuller-Newman Model to Optimise the Rate Performance of Bilayer Cathodes in Li Ion Batteries

    Bilayer cathodes comprising two active materials are explored for their ability to improve lithium-ion battery charging performance. Electrodes are manufactured with various arrangements of lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide Li[Ni0.6Co0.2Mn0.2]O2 (NMC622) and lithium iron phosphate LiFePO4 (LFP) active particles, including in two different discrete sub-layers. We present experimental data on the sensitivity of the electrode C rate performance to the electrode design. To understand the complex bilayer electrode performance, and to identify an optimal design for fast charging, we develop an extension to the Doyle-Fuller-Newman (DFN) model of electrode dynamics that accommodates different active materials in any number of sub-layers, termed the multilayer DFN (M-DFN) model. The M-DFN model is validated against experimental data and then used to explain the performance differences between the electrode arrangements. We show how the different open circuit potential functions of NMC and LFP can be exploited synergistically through electrode design. Manipulating the Li electrolyte concentration increases achievable capacity. Finally the M-DFN model is used to further optimize the best performing bilayer electrode arrangement by adjusting the ratio of the LFP and NMC sub-layer thickness.</p

    Development and psychometric evaluation of a new domain-specific coparenting measure:Coparenting Children's Emotion Scale

    Caregivers play an integral role in supporting children's development, not only through their individual parenting practices but also how they work together as coparents. The literature on coparenting is extensive; however, most of the research has relied on global measures to assess the quality and functioning of the coparenting relationship. Examining the coparenting relationship with domain-specific measures enables a deeper understanding of this complex family process. One domain of particular interest is emotion socialization given the vast and long-term consequences emotion socialization has on children's emotional, social, behavioral, and psychological functioning. Emotion socialization literature would benefit from a domain-specific coparenting measure, as researchers have rarely explored how coparents work together when responding to their children's emotions (i.e., coparenting children's emotions). As such, an emotion-focused coparenting measure could address gaps in both coparenting and emotion socialization literature. This study outlines the development and psychometric evaluation of a domain-specific measure of coparenting, the Coparenting Children's Emotion Scale (CCES), which assesses how parents work together when responding to their children's emotions. In the current study, the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the CCES were examined in an Australian sample. Findings from exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses showed that the CCES comprises two subscales that capture coparents' levels of support/cooperation and undermining. In the current sample, both CCES subscales demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency, and good convergent and concurrent validity. The CCES will provide researchers and practitioners with a domain-specific measure to use in exploratory and intervention research.</p

    Prevalence and Factors Associated With Healthy Aging in a Large Representative Community Sample of Older Ethiopians

    Objectives: To examine the prevalence and predictors of healthy aging among community-dwelling older adults living in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study included older adults aged 60 and above (n = 845; Mage = 71 years; 56.4% females). Poisson regression estimated the Relative Risk (RR) of factors associated with healthy aging status. Results: 36.7% of respondents were classified as healthy agers. Factors associated with an increased likelihood of healthy aging included reporting not being lonely, adequate nutrition, no multimorbidity, good self-rated health, financial independence, and engaging in at least 1 hour of moderate physical activity per week. Discussion: The proportion of healthy agers in this study was substantially lower compared to developed countries but comparable to the prevalence reported in similar developing nations. Enhancing physical activity, ensuring proper nutrition, interventions to foster social participation engagement, and networking, and managing chronic diseases were identified as promising strategies to promote healthy aging.</p

    The bioactive and phytochemical composition of the range of Australian honeys and their potential implications in health

    INTRODUCTIONHoney is one of the most common food products used in a variety of different cuisines and has been used as a sweetener for over a millennium. Honey is also a supersaturated sugar solution derived from the plant nectars. Its physicochemical composition is largely influenced by several factors such as geographical position, predominant floral availability, and climate and temperature variations. Furthermore, the region of the individual hives (top and bottom) and the different comb (new and old) play an important characteristic in the overall honey composition. The potential implication of honey consumption in health will depend on the honey composition. This project aimed to determine the phytochemical composition of some of the commercially available Australian honey. Furthermore, we intended to examine the polyphenolic and antioxidant variation in the different comb (new and old) of the same hive. MATERIALS AND METHODSIn total, 28 commercially available Australian honeys were obtained from local shops and chain supermarkets. These honeys were transported to the Institute of Apicultural Research (China) for analysis. In addition, 8 honey samples (using variation in combs) from one hive were donated by the local honey grower and analysed at the FFNR Laboratory (Australia). Honeys were analysed for physical properties (moisture, total soluble solids, Baumé, pH, electrical conductivity and colour), carbohydrate composition (sucrose, maltose, fructose, glucose), quality (5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF)), acidity (free acid, lactone total acid), enzymatic activity (diastase), antioxidant profile including antioxidant radical scavenging capacity (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)), Cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assay and Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Furthermore, we also analysed total phenolic content (Folin-Ciocalteur method) and total flavonoid content. Data were expressed as mean ± standard error and plotted as bar graphs using GraphPad Prim 8 (GraphPad Software, San Diego, CA, USA). Differences between groups were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Duncan's post hoc test (p &lt; 0.05) in SPSS 17.0 (Chicago, IL, USA).RESULTSThe selection of samples from the commercially available Australian honeys had a range of values for total polyphenolic content (226.93±1.52 to 475.74±3.49 mgGAE/kg), total flavonoid (28.62±0.10 to 87.76±0.57 mgCE/kg), DDPH (0.03±0.01 to 0.47±0.02 mmolTE/g; 8.09±2.26 to 43.18±2.97 %), FRAP (0.55±0.04 to 1.58±0.06 mmolTE/g), CUPRAC (1.92±0.05 to 4.12±0.05 mmolTE/g), total sugar (64.43±2.36 to 78.62±3.17 %), total acid (17.47±1.41 to 45.02±1.77 mg/kg), color (L*: 19.80±0.26 to 27.13±0.38; a*: -0.33±0.15 to 2.37±0.31; b*: 2.50±0.00 to 8.83±0.42). Samples from the same hive have exhibited total polyphenolic (320.60±4.03 to 430.57±2.49 mgGAE/kg), DDPH (0.37±0.05 to 0.53±0.03 mmolTE/g; 15.55±5.64 to 35.12±3.94 %,), FRAP (0.74±0.06 to 1.50±0.18 mmolTE/g), CUPRAC (4.51±0.42 to 6.51±0.68 mmolTE/g), color (L*: 13.47±0.32 to 16.04±0.70; a*: 1.69±0.82 to 3.27±0.76; b*: 4.17±0.73 to 6.69±2.10).DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONAll honey samples have exhibited relatively high total polyphenolic content and antioxidant properties. All other values remained relatively consistent between the samples while total acidity levels have shown highest range. This could be due to the geographical positioning of the sample’s origin. Future studies, using these samples are orientated towards the taste determinations and potential anti-diabetic properties in vitro and in human participants. <br/
