    Ankle inversion proprioception measured during stair descent can identify chronic ankle instability

    Background: Individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) may experience recurrent ankle sprains and symptoms during daily activities such as stair descent, where the associated proprioceptive deficit is largely unevaluated. Objectives: To evaluate the reliability and validity of an ankle inversion discrimination apparatus for stair descent, and examine whether proprioceptive scores from this apparatus are associated with patient-reported symptoms. Design: Cross-sectional study. Method: Sixty-six participants volunteered in this study. The ankle inversion discrimination apparatus was purpose-built to assess ankle proprioception across four positions of ankle inversion (10°, 12°, 14°, and 16°) during stair descent. The Area Under the Receiver Operating Curve (AUC) was employed as the ankle proprioceptive discrimination score. Results: Test-retest reliability ICC (3,1) for the whole group was 0.825, with 0.747 for the non-CAI group (95%CI = 0.331–0.920) and 0.701 for CAI (95%CI = 0.242–0.904). The CAI group performed at a significantly lower level than non-CAI on the ankle inversion discrimination apparatus for stair descent assessment (0.769 ± 0.034 vs. 0.830 ± 0.035, F = 33.786, p &lt; 0.001). CAIT scores were strongly and significantly correlated with scores from this apparatus (Spearman's rho = 0.730, p &lt; 0.001). Conclusions: The ankle inversion discrimination apparatus for stair descent is reliable and valid for assessing task-specific ankle proprioceptive impairments in CAI. The strong and significant relationship found between ankle proprioception during stair descent and the severity of CAI suggests that rehabilitation programs focusing on deficits in ankle inversion proprioception during stair descent may improve self-reported instability in CAI.</p

    How Does Health-Related Quality of Life Change over Time in Cancer Survivors Following an Admission to the Intensive Care Unit?:An Integrative Review

    Background Cancer survivors account for 15% to 20% of all intensive care unit (ICU) admissions. In general ICU populations, patients are known to experience reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, little is known about HRQoL impacts among cancer survivors following a critical illness in ICU. Objective The aim of this study was to critically synthesize the evidence to further understand the impact of a critical illness and ICU admission in cancer survivors. Methods An integrative review was conducted and reported according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis) guidelines. Three electronic databases were searched (MEDLINE, CINAHL, and EMBASE) using keywords and Boolean logic. Quality appraisal, data extraction, and a narrative synthesis were completed for all included studies by 2 reviewers. Results Eleven publications met inclusion criteria. Health-related quality-of-life domains most frequently reported in cancer survivors after discharge from ICU included the following: physical function limitations, physical symptoms, and anxiety/depression. Conclusions Health-related quality of life decreased immediately after the admission to ICU with a gradual increase in the 3 to 12 months following. Cancer survivors are vulnerable to physical limitations, pain, and social isolation after an admission to ICU. Implications for Practice Cancer survivors who have been affected by a critical illness are at risk of reduced HRQoL after an admission to ICU. This integrative review will help clinicians and researchers to develop patient-centered models of care during the recovery of critical illness, which are currently lacking in service delivery.</p

    The Uncanny Effect of Speech : the Impact of Appearance and Speaking on Impression Formation in Human–Robot Interactions

    This study explores the impact of appearance and speech on human perceptions of faces in human- robot interactions. Three videos were generated depicting the real face of an artist and two virtual versions of the same artist, with increasing resolution and fidelity. Each video was presented with and without speech, with matching levels of fidelity to the faces (real human speech and machine- generated speech of two levels of realism). Participants viewed all six videos and rated them on measures such as convincing, trustworthy, realistic, likable, showed biological movement, reassuring, friendly, familiar, and humanness. We found that the inclusion of speech (real) had a significant positive impact on the impression formation of real human appearance. In contrast, perceptions of the virtual avatars were more negative when speech (machine-like) was incorporated. This study illustrates the differential effects that speech can have on virtual faces in interactive settings
