    Exploring How Young People’s Access To News Literacy Education Influences Their Digital Civic Engagement

    This study examines the effectiveness of news literacy education on young Australian’s digital civic engagement using propensity score matching, a method that ensures balanced comparisons between those who have received news literacy education and those who haven’t. A representative online survey of young Australians aged 12–16 years (n = 627) was conducted in June 2023. We found no differences in young people’s exposure to news literacy education opportunities based on age, gender, and region. However, parents’ education has a significance influence on young people’s exposure to news literacy education. A regression analysis reveals that news literacy education is positively related to young people’s digital civic engagement, confirmed by the propensity score matching analysis. The study demonstrates the critical role of news literacy education in fostering informed and engaged digital citizens, highlighting the need for inclusive and comprehensive news literacy programs in the national curriculum

    Can renewable energy zones become regional equity zones? Policy coherence and social equity in the Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap in New South Wales, Australia

    Governments across a range of countries are establishing renewable energy zones to accelerate and coordinate the construction of large-scale solar, wind and battery infrastructure and associated transmission lines, mainly in regions outside metropolitan areas. Renewable energy zones intensify the geographical concentration of both the benefits and impacts for communities living near this infrastructure, raising both opportunities and challenges for policymaking. This article applies theories of policy coherence to ask: (a) what synergies and tensions arise between renewable energy and social equity for regional communities when establishing and implementing renewable energy zones, and (b) what political factors drive synergies and tensions between these policy objectives and how could they be managed more effectively? We present findings from a case study of the Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap in New South Wales, Australia's most populous state, drawing on documentary analysis, interviews and focus groups. We identify several drivers of incoherence, including political polarisation over energy policy, limited inter-agency coordination and scale mismatches that disincentivise community energy initiatives. Drivers of coherence include cross-party dialogue, strengthening institutional capacity and incentives for project developers to invest in community engagement and benefit-sharing. Our analysis yields lessons for the rollout of renewable energy zones internationally, while also demonstrating the value of a policy coherence lens for advancing equity and justice together with other policy objectives.</p

    The Athlete-IQ:Evaluating iron knowledge of female athletes and staff; with insights into practices among dietitians and iron experts

    Background Iron deficiency (ID) is common in female athletes, with variable diagnostic criteria and supplementation protocols used to determine deficient athletes. Understanding iron rich food sources is fundamental to optimal nutrition intake. Purpose: Our aim was to characterise the iron knowledge of female athletes and affiliated staff and explore factors influencing iron deficiency practices among dietitians and iron experts (sports physiologists and iron researchers). Methods A cross-sectional design was employed using a web-based iron questionnaire (adapted from previously validated questionnaires). Part One consisted of 16 items (11 iron questions) and was completed by female athletes and staff. Participants achieving a score &gt;75 ​% (percentage of correct answers) were deemed to have adequate iron knowledge. Part Two consisted of 22 items (14 on iron deficiency practice) and was completed by dietitians and iron experts. Descriptive statistics were used for multiple choice questions and open responses were coded thematically. Results Sixty-two participants (athletes n ​= ​42; staff n ​= ​20) across 10 sports completed Part One. Iron knowledge scores ranged from 21 ​% to 88 ​% among athletes (46 ​% ​± ​13 ​%) and staff (60 ​% ​± ​16 ​%). Twenty-eight practitioners (sports dietitians: n ​= ​14; other professions: n ​= ​14) across 28 sports completed Part Two. Between 10 ​% and 56 ​% of practitioners applied established criteria for diagnosing iron deficiency. Supplementation protocols varied between 20 and 100 ​mg/day or bi-daily of elemental iron for earlier stages of iron deficiency increasing to 60–200 ​mg/day or bi-daily for anaemic athletes. Conclusion Iron knowledge is highly variable in female athletes and club staff. Teams and organisations should promote valid nutrition resources when access to a sports dietitian is not feasible. Practitioners may adopt heightened criteria to categorise iron deficiency but should adjust individual thresholds based on factors underpinning fluctuations in iron status.</p

    Pearl in the Shell: Exploring Leader Humility's Role in Follower Knowledge Hiding and Sharing Dynamics

    While existing studies suggest that leader humility mitigates knowledge-hiding behavior, our study challenges this notion by revealing that leader humility fosters knowledge hiding through inclusion, while simultaneously promoting knowledge sharing. Drawing on Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study demonstrates that leader humility indirectly influences both knowledge hiding and sharing through the mechanism of inclusion. These findings contribute to the literature by shedding light on the complex interplay between leader humility and its contextual effects on knowledge management behaviors within organizations

    Inclusive climate communication; learning to podcast or learning to listen?

    During our recent research on gender, disability and climate, we heard a clear call for a wider diversity of the forms by which research was disseminated and returned to the communities. In broadening our methods, we reflected on moments of questioning, tensions, challenges and ethical ponderings that we encountered throughout the creation of more creative outputs. These tensions included questions about what means of communication and dissemination dominate in research, who speaks and who listens, the challenges of negotiating power, ethics and care, rethinking ‘whose stories’ and who is doing the telling and, finally, solutions for accessibility barriers or obstacles encountered. Specifically, the paper argues that podcasting and other communications methods should be recorded in mainstream academic practice, with a focus on how we represent knowledge and methods for knowledge production. Utilising a breadth of spaces for stories and lived experiences is a crucial part of a commitment to listening and learning together in modern development collaborative practice.</p

    International environmental sustainability discourse in the wake of Covid-19: exploring the psychic dimension of political discourse through fantasy

    In accounting for the lack of political will to meaningfully tackle environmental crises at a global level, a growing number of scholars argue that we must take seriously the role emotional and unconscious attachments play in policy discourse. In this paper, we argue that the psychic dimension of international environmental sustainability discourse (IESD) remains under-explored compared to the scholarly attention given to the structural and normative dimensions of international environmental politics. We draw on political discourse theory and critical fantasy studies to develop a framework within which to characterize and critically examine the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic upon IESD. We treat the pandemic as a dislocation, arguing that it provides a particularly productive vantage point from which to explore the fantasmatic underpinnings of IESD. We present an illustrative discourse analysis of relevant UN documents and media productions in 2020-22, foregrounding the political significance of fantasy in international environmental discourse

    Finite Element Modeling of Residual Stress Formation during Nanosecond Laser Ablation of Stainless Steel

    Laser cleaning has recently gained attention as a non-contact, precise, and environmentally friendly method for removing contaminants, oxides, or coatings from surfaces using controlled laser ablation. However, even at low fluence, where no visible damage is observed, thermal effects from nanosecond laser pulses can induce residual stress, potentially affecting the long-term reliability of the material. This study introduces a finite element method model to predict residual stress formation in single-pulse laser ablation of stainless steel, providing detailed insight into the localized thermomechanical response. The model captures individual pulse effects, including stress evolution, thermal expansion, and localized plastic deformation. Experimental validation via X-ray diffraction is also performed. Based on this model, a parametric study is conducted to investigate the influence of pulse duration and fluence on residual stress development. The results reveal how thermal input parameters affect stress field formation and redistribution, even in the absence of visible material removal. These findings enhance understanding of stress generation in laser-processed metals and offer a framework for predicting residual stress and identifying truly damage-free thresholds in metallic substrates.</p

    Cybersecurity and Australian Medical Practice: Emerging Themes from Research Survey

    In the current age of interconnectivity with constant evolving cybersecurity landscape and increasing cyber threats, medical clinics need robust cybersecurity to secure the vast amounts of sensitive patient data held. Emerging themes of this research into the cybersecurity practice of Australian medical clinics within the greater Australian Capital Territory region revealed there remains a significant gap in their cybersecurity awareness, process and governance. Mitigating human error is key, if not the top priority, to improve cybersecurity. Medical clinics should reduce human error with effective mitigation strategies: instituting cybersecurity awareness, training and governance such policies, procedures and standards to instil a secure cybersecurity culture to create a human firewall to protect their systems and information from cyber threats and attacks. These initial findings contribute to the literature on cybersecurity and medical practice which hitherto has been unexplored
