    Can we research students’ sense of belonging without affecting it? A process evaluation exploring online diaries as a student voice activity

    Due to its clear links with student success outcomes, many universities are now invested in researching and monitoring their students’ sense of belonging. This article provides a case study of implementing a research project at two English universities using the online diaries research method with 65 first-year undergraduate students. A large majority of participants (83%) felt that the process of reflecting on their sense of belonging had itself positively contributed to their sense of belonging. Students reported that the online diaries helped them find acceptance when experiencing challenges to their sense of belonging, as well as reminders of positive experiences of belonging. These findings suggest an ‘observer effect’: that asking students about their sense of belonging is likely to affect it. This article concludes with a discussion on implications for the design of our student voice approaches, as well as challenges towards the external validity of research around student belonging

    ‘The Good Place’: investigating the social responsibility image of countries and its impact on the attractiveness of highly skilled workers

    This article aims to bridge the gap between corporate social responsibility and place branding literature by (1) examining the nature and dimensions of the social responsibility image of countries (SRIC), (2) developing a scale for SRIC and (3) measuring its impact on nation brand identification and intention to apply for a job. Leveraging social identity theory, associative network theory and selection–attraction–attrition theory, the study employs a mixed method approach comprising semi-structured interviews, focus groups and a survey with UK and Italian highly skilled workers. Findings reveal the complexity of this multidimensional concept which integrates economic, ethical and environmental factors. SRIC exerts a significant impact on both nation brand identification and intention to apply for a job vacancy. Based on the results, organisations and governments interested in luring the best candidates should work in partnership to develop adequate programmes and a consistent narrative that highlight economic, ethical and environmental responsibilities of the place

    Student self-assessment: a meta-review of five decades of research

    Student self-assessment has received considerable research interest. While several review articles have mapped self-assessment studies, there remains a need to synthesise the insights from field and the differing views and approaches within. In this critical meta-review, we conduct a discourse analysis of 28 earlier review studies concerning self-assessment, spanning five decades of research. We ask: What is known about student self-assessment? How have review studies produced knowledge about self-assessment? Analysing our data corpus, we deconstruct four discourses: psychological discourse (self-assessment as a clinical intervention); educational discourse (self-assessment as a contextual, relational practice); performance discourse (self-assessment as a performative practice); and societal discourse (self-assessment as a societal practice). These four discourses represent different forms of knowledge production. Through these discourses, self-assessment research has continued the history of promoting a reflective, rational and autonomous human subject in educational settings, but ironically, often through the occlusion of the self

    Public speaking is an essential skill for pre-service teachers as it plays a critical role in both professional success and the teaching-learning process. Despite its importance, many individuals, particularly students, experience public speaking anxiety, which can affect their performance. This paper explores the intersection of self-assessed public speaking anxiety levels and biometric data collected through stress tracker devices and AI-based emotion detection tools, aiming to investigate students’ awareness of their anxiety during public speaking. Data were collected from 257 students enrolled in a first-year course at the University of Macerata (2023/24). Students were asked to complete a survey and give an oral presentation in groups. A subset of 25 student responses were compared with biometric data, including heart rate measurements and data obtained by an AI emotion recognition system. Cross-referencing self-reported anxiety levels with heart rate data showed varying degrees of convergence, suggesting that students often misperceived their emotional state. In some cases, their self-assessments did not align with the biometric indicators of stress, suggesting a lack of self-awareness regarding their anxiety levels. These findings highlight the potential for AI and IoT technologies to provide useful data that can help teachers identify and support students who are not aware of their emotional state and who also have anxiety management issues. By incorporating these tools, university teachers can develop optimized and tailored interventions aimed at improving students’ public speaking skills and emotional regulation. Further research should explore the effectiveness of these tools across different courses and sample sizes

    Resource allocation in networked joint radar and communications

    In today's world, particularly in civilian sectors where situational awareness is paramount, research is being conducted on concepts that enable the joint realization of both sensing and communication functions with the upcoming 6G technology planned for near-future deployment, especially in sectors like automotive. On the other hand, efforts in the military domain to enhance situational awareness and counter evolving air threats have gained momentum with the development of systems incorporating multiple sensors for joint operation, known as radar network architectures. However, when multiple radar systems operate together, bandwidth allocation must be performed in order to avoid interference. As a contribution to the literature, this study proposes a joint radar and communication network concept applied to air defense systems, aiming to enhance their situational awareness by adopting the joint radar and communication concept commonly addressed in civilian applications. Additionally, a resource optimization problem has been addressed to maximize the performance of both radar and communication functions within the joint radar and communication network

    The value of information in economic contexts

    This paper explores the application of the Value of Information, (VoI), based on the Claude Shannon/Ruslan Stratonovich framework within economic contexts. Unlike previous studies that examine circular settings and strategic interactions, we focus on a non-strategic linear setting. We employ standard economically motivated utility functions, including linear, quadratic, constant absolute risk aversion (CARA), and constant relative risk aversion (CRRA), across various priors of the stochastic environment, and analyse the resulting specific VoI forms. The curvature of these VoI functions play a decisive role in determining whether acquiring additional costly information enhances the efficiency of the decision making process.
