Coaching psychology: the effect of coaching by values in forming Arab teens’ personal and collective self-esteem in the state of Israel

    Get PDF
This research aims to contribute to the literature on the field of coaching psychology on development of identity with a focus on the psychological aspects of marginalized populations. In particular, it will add to our understanding of the effect of coaching by values in forming Arab teens’ personal and collective self-esteem in the State of Israel. These Arab teenagers who are Israeli citizens, yet occupy a marginal position in society, live between conflicting cultures and seek to find an identity and a set of values that enable them to find their place in society. The use of a coaching model will add to our understanding of how an intervention can assist such groups struggling to find a strategy of identity and healthy personal and collective self-esteem. The research contributes both to the literature on self-collective esteem formation and to understanding the role of coaching in working with marginalized people in order to increase its effectiveness in a complex reality and to develop a model that I and other coaches could use. A sequential design methodology was used in this research in order to answer the research question: is a values-based coaching program an effective intervention for developing the personal and collective self- esteem of the Arab youth. The first stage used a method of questionnaires (the quantitative part) to 400 students in the 11th and 12th grades, aiming to explore the current average (numerical) level of personal and collective self-esteem and to discover the dominant type of values of the research population. Another aim was to explore the correlations between these terms. The second, qualitative part used semi-structured interviews both before and after the coaching sessions. Ten students participated in ten coaching by values sessions, one session a week. The quantitative part was analyzed using the SPSS program to gain a general understanding of Arab teenagers’ perspectives towards their collective and personal self-esteem and of their system of values. This part sought to find any relationship between the collective and personal self-esteem and values. The qualitative part was analyzed using a thematic method. Results indicate central findings in relation to the overall research question: ● There is a lack of awareness in Arab teenagers of self and collective esteem. ● There is a relationship between realizing values and increased self-esteem and collective self-esteem. ● There is a fundamental need to build relevant interventions focused on values in order to form healthy self-esteem and collective self-esteem in Arab teenagers. ● The coaching program as an intervention-based values reveals itself as a useful intervention. Therefore, it should be extended to both parents and teachers

Non solo il Mediterraneo: sbarchi di migranti e politiche dei confini lungo la rotta della Manica

In recent years, an increasing number of migrants have been risking their lives every day as they attempt to cross the waters of the English Channel from northern France to reach Britain. It is a growing phenomenon as data collected by the Home Office highlight. In 2018 only 300 people crossed the channel, 4.8 per cent of all irregular migrants detected at the point of entry in the UK. In 2021, the number of people trying to reach England in inflatable boats, dinghies and kayaks was by far the largest compared to all other irregular means, including by air with false documents or hiding in trucks or containers. Of the more than 31,000 detected irregular entries, 90 percent were on small boats. This trend is continuing with nearly 13,000 people crossing as of June 2022 compared to 5,917 in the same period last year. The main nationalities are Iranian and Afghan, and recently also Albanian. Many of those crossing the English Channel come from the Balkan route before crossing the northwestern border between Italy and France. In this contribution I try to address some issues related to these new migration flows. I will present some data about their characteristics and highlight the role of migration policies and the migration industry in the growth of these flows. My main argument is that the development of this new route has been driven by a combination of policies, networks, and agency.

Early years teachers’ perspectives of integrated working and professional development: a qualitative exploration in a local authority in London

An important strand of early years policy development has been an increased focus on integrated service provision. This has been part of government policy initiatives during the past two decades that have sought to promote children’s development and enhance their life chances (Barnes et al. 2018). Collaboration between professionals from different disciplines is considered to effectively support multifaceted issues that may adversely affect young children’s development (Gordon et al. 2016; Vandekerckhove et al. 2019). However, integrated working has been identified as a complex area of practice (Canavan et al. 2009; Wong and Sumsion 2013; Nutbrown 2018) that takes place in a fluid landscape of children’s services. Developing the proficiency to collaborate effectively and responsively with others requires additional layers of expertise, as well as the specialist knowledge and skills associated with particular professional roles (Edwards, 2010a; Cumming and Wong 2012). This project explores measures that can enhance support for early years teachers in integrated working practice. Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological model (Bronfenbrenner and Morris 2006) is employed as a theoretical framework for the research. This model draws attention to the importance of the early years teacher’s reciprocal interactions with key actors in integrated working and how these might be influenced by personal characteristics, contextual and temporal factors. The research is framed as a qualitative interview study that incorporates the use of in-depth interviews and the experimental use of a walking interview with one participant. Thematic analysis of the participants’ data reveals an array of measures to support the early years teacher to engage in integrated working. Findings from the research are supplemented by exploration of the current evidence base to identify recommendations for practice. These include a focused consideration of the role of reciprocal interactions in integrated working practice, the use of technology to support communication, practical tasks in professional development and an exploration of the wider field of support to help the early years teacher to manage the ‘complex realities of practice’ (Dalli et al. 2012: 7)

Corporate criminal liability and international criminal law

    Get PDF
The study investigates the question of the international criminal liability of corporations. The issue of the involvement of private corporations in international crimes has been a matter of controversy for decades. Over the years, several scholars have commented in favour or against the feasibility of holding business companies accountable under international criminal law. Both sides of the debate have often based their arguments on a narrow interpretation of the history of international criminal law centred solely on two pivotal moments: The Nuremberg trials (1946-1948) and the adoption of the Rome Statute (1998). To those against an international criminal liability of corporations, the lack of formal recognition of such liability in Nuremberg and Rome represents a clear indication that the international criminal system rejected the concept altogether. This reading of the history of international criminal law has been embraced by the U.S. Supreme Court in its 2018 opinion in the case Jesner v. Arab Bank. The study contests the narrow interpretation provided by the U.S. Supreme Court and argues that, whilst never formally recognised, the question of the international criminal liability of corporations has constantly been a part of the debate on the scope of international criminal law. Through a systematic analysis of normative and academic sources, this study explores the extent to which the criminal liability of corporate actors has been discussed in the context of international criminal law from the early 1940s to the present day. This examination highlights the ongoing relevance of the issue under consideration and the evolution of the arguments used to advance or contest the applicability of international criminal law to corporations. In doing so, it demonstrates that the challenges that have so far prevented the adoption of such concept at the international level are not without solutions. Additionally, the study offers practical solutions for the development of a feasible model to impose international criminal liability to corporations. In consideration of its centrality in the international criminal justice system, the International Criminal Court is suggested as the designated forum for prosecution. By providing a comprehensive evaluation of the development of the debate on corporate criminal liability and international criminal law, the aims to facilitate a more genuine and open discussion on the possibility of establishing an international criminal liability of corporations

Competition law and socio-economic advancement: Nigeria as a case study – giving a hungry man a silk tie?

    Get PDF
This thesis follows the recognized position that a means of improving the Nigerian socio-economic environment is through a free market economy and a competitive economic environment that has strongly rooted equal and easy access to raw materials, workforce, and technology that would be available to all businesses. It backs the position that in free market economies, through protecting demand and supply, competition law more efficiently maximizes consumer welfare as opposed to government regulation or unregulated competition, and it enhances economic development. The thesis recognizes that competition law is relatively new in Nigeria, answers the question: to what extent can the proper implementation of competition law and policy be employed to promote economic advancement in Nigeria? The submitted views are somewhat based on an analysis of the objectives of competition law and policy, in order to determine whether Nigeria has unique problems, and if so, whether the common principles in competition policy are adequate to address them. Furthermore, this research examines existing regulatory regimes and the role it plays with regards to competition regulation.the question that arises is whether the regulations set out by these bodies are sufficient to promote and preserve competition. This thesis analyses the position and effectiveness of these regulatory organs in the promotion of competition. The thesis examines the historical antecedent and institutional structure, including developments in competition law in the United States of America (US) and the European Union (EU). Furthermore, it examines some of the standards in the competition policies of these jurisdictions such as those concerning agreements, abuse of dominant position and mergers, to determine which competition model could be best adopted by Nigeria. The thesis recognises that in 2019 the Nigerian President, General Muhammadu Buhari signed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2019 which repealed the Consumer Protection Council Act. The introduction of a codified set of competition rules into Nigeria’s regulatory oversight framework came as a long anticipated change, to ensure that market distortions across all sectors are minimized and rules of fair play are respected in the market place. Before the enactment, the laws governing competition and consumer protection were separate, fragmented and industry-specific. The thesis recognises that while the enactment of the law was a good start, there will be certain challenges. It proposes Nigeria uses these laws and advancements which have been made over the years as a mechanism to determine whether the same rules could apply, which competition law model could be best adopted and for building a suitable competition law. Through examining these jurisdictions, the thesis provides a setting to compare policy experiences, seek answers to common problems and identify best practices so as to make recommendations which may improve existing policy

Effect of mindfulness on online impulse buying: Moderated mediation model of problematic internet use and emotional intelligence

    Get PDF
Introduction: Online impulse buying behavior is an unplanned urge to buy a product or service in an online setting and it has several negative consequences for customers, such as guilt and financial distress, and e-commerce firms, such as higher returns and customer complaints. Evidently, it is important to examine the various psychological processes which may assist in a better understanding, therefore addressing the high prevalence of online impulse buying. This study builds upon self-regulation theory to explore how mindfulness influences online impulse buying, and examines problematic internet use as a mediator in the relationship between mindfulness and online impulse buying. Further, this study investigates how emotional intelligence as a moderator plays the role of a suppressant on the adverse impact of problematic Internet use which fuels online impulse buying. Method: A total of 598 individuals working with various servicebased industries responded to the questionnaire. Multiple regression and moderated mediation analysis was used using SPSS and AMOS for analyzing the data. Result: Problematic internet use mediates the relationship between mindfulness and online impulse buying behavior. Emotional intelligence negatively moderates the relationship between problematic internet use and online impulse buying behavior. Discussion: This study findings outlined the inverse relationship of mindfulness & online impulse buying, along with the mediating effect of problematic internet use between mindfulness and online impulse buying. Further, this study showed how emotional intelligence played an important role as a moderator by suppressing the adverse impact of problematic Internet use and preventing online impulse buying. The study offers implications to online marketers in regulating the unplanned purchase process—while minimizing uninhibited buying behavior that leads to regret, and the subsequent intention to return products. Further, social and theoretical implications are discussed

The growing popularity of advanced multimedia-rich applications along with the increasing affordability of high-end smart mobile devices has led to a massive growth in mobile data traffic that puts significant pressure on the underlying network technology. However, no single network technology will be equipped to deal with this explosion of mobile data traffic. While wireless technologies had a spectacular evolution over the past years, the present trend is to adopt a global heterogeneous network of shared standards that enables the provisioning of quality of service and quality of experience to the end-user. To this end, enabling technologies like machine learning, Internet of Things and digital twins are seen as promising solutions for next generation networks that will enable an intelligent adaptive interconnected environment with support for prediction and decision making so that the heterogeneous applications and users' requirements can be highly satisfied. The aim of this textbook is to provide the readers with a comprehensive technical foundation of the mobile communication systems and wireless network design, and operations and applications of various radio access technologies. Additionally, it also introduces the reader to the latest advancements in technologies in terms of Internet of Things ecosystems, machine learning and digital twins for IoT-enabled intelligent environments. Furthermore, this textbook also includes practical use-case scenarios using Altair WinProp Software as well as Python, TensorFlow and Jupyter as support for practice-based laboratory sessions

Racial economic inequality: the visible tip of an inequality iceberg

    Get PDF
Early on, the scientific and medical communities discounted the more generalised genetic explanations, owing to the fact that there are few common genetic links between the diverse ethnicities comprising the black and ethnic minority people (BAME) category. The BAME category itself is increasingly contested by minorities themselves although it continues to be used by governments for statistical purposes. The relationship between the British state and its emerging ethnic minority communities and citizens was recast after the passing of the first Race Relations Act in 1965. Measuring inequality is not an exact science, and more complex analysis is necessary to try and identify significant factors that might explain inequality at a more granular level. Race and class are observably aligned on the issue of Covid-19 rates of infection and death

Excavating the archive: exchanges between artists and their photographers

    No full text
Excavating the Archive focuses on the documentation of live art through interviews with artists and their photographers or film-makers and reflects on the ways in which bodies of photographic work have been made manifest as representations of the live within exhibitions. The exhibition and publication Live Art on Camera (John Hansard Gallery, 2007, SPACE, 2008) positioned documentation of artists’ performances within the context of the archives of the photographers or filmmakers who had recorded their work. In this way seminal performance documentation from artists including Gutai, Adrian Piper, Carolee Schneemann, Marina Abramovic, Ana Mendieta amongst many others was seen in relation to the ongoing practices of the corresponding photographers and filmmakers, Kiyoji Otsuji, Rosemary Mayer, Peter Moore, Babette Mangolte, Hans Breder, Kurt Kren amongst others. A series of interviews enabled insight from both sides of the camera. These conversations opened up discussions about the actuality of the lived experience, the act of recording and being recorded, the physical processes mechanics inherent in the making of the work and the ways in which these images subsequently navigated paths both through the historical and commercial canons of art. Excavating the Archive re-evaluates this approach within the present and tracks the circulation of specific images within contemporary discourses

An interpretative phenomenological analysis of counselling psychologists' experiences of stress in NHS child and adolescent mental health tier 3 work settings

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to identify and understand counselling psychologists’ individual experiences of stress in NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services Tier 3. The qualitative methodology of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used to allow the emergence of each participant’s idiographic, personal experiences of the phenomenon of stress in their work settings, and the meaning each ascribed to it. Data was collected from seven counselling psychologists (six females, one male) permanently employment by NHS CAMHS. Each participant was individually interviewed on two separate occasions with a period of up to six months between interviews. Each semi-structured 60-minute interview was digitally timed, audio-recorded, transcribed in full, and analysed using IPA. All first interviews were conducted in person on NHS site locations. Some of the second interviews were done over Skype video at participants’ NHS sites or in person and the same protocol was observed as in the first interviews. Fourteen interviews were collected in total. A systematic analysis of the transcripts identified fourteen sub-themes which merged into four super-ordinate or master themes: (1) Impact of NHS changes on CAMHS Tier 3 work settings, (2) Therapy room impact, (3) Counselling psychologists’ well-being and morale, and (4) Professional identity issues. The findings showed that all the counselling psychologists were experiencing intense stress in their working lives. The study took place in the political context of National Health Service (NHS) reform and austerity based economic restructuring which is ongoing. Counselling psychologists believed such economic cuts caused contextual changes in CAMHS settings which brought new stressors into their working lives. Their experiences of stress were similar to factors consistently identified in organisational stress research as burnout risk factors or burnout itself. As a result of the increased stress, they expressed either a desire to leave their posts or they were already seeking work elsewhere. Participants also shared stress experiences related to professional identity issues involved in being the relatively new and only other psychology discipline working and competing for jobs in NHS CAMHS Tier 3. In many cases, a mitigating factor of the stress was a sense of meaning derived from their relationships and work with mentally unwell young people. Given the importance of the therapeutic relationship as a conduit for successful therapeutic outcomes, research on how best to support and protect against occupational stress experienced as impacting the early intervention work of NHS CAMHS counselling psychologists is an area for future research
