A handbook to support the sexual and reproductive health needs of factory women migrant workers
This Handbook is the product of a five-year research programme, funded at different phases by three funding agencies, investigating ways in which the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of Malaysia's factory women migrant workers can be supported. Sexual and reproductive
health is regarded as a human right, essential to human development and the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It is enshrined in the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Program of Action, the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) defines good sexual and reproductive health as: “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system. It implies that people are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life, the capability to reproduce and the freedom to decide if, when, and how often to do so. To maintain one’s sexual and reproductive health, people need access to accurate information and the safe, effective, affordable and acceptable contraception method of their choice. They must be informed and empowered to protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections. And when they decide to have children, women must have access to skilled health care providers and services that can help them have a fit pregnancy, safe birth and healthy baby. Every individual has the right to make their own choices about their sexual and reproductive health.”
Our research shows that women migrant workers in Malaysia are a marginalised population and vulnerable to poor SRH. Poor SRH impacts on these women’s well-being and their ability to work. Yet, many women migrant workers cannot afford healthcare to address poor SRH, are unfamiliar with the local health system and do not have access to SRH information, education or counselling. They are reluctant to mention that
something is wrong or discuss SRH conditions with managers and supervisors. As a result, many women migrant workers suffer from untreated reproductive health conditions, such as breast and cervical diseases, urinary tract infections, menstruation problems or unwanted pregnancies.
Many of these conditions can be prevented. Forced testing against pregnancy, prohibitions against getting pregnant and imprisonment and deportation in the event of pregnancy and abortion all violate the SRH rights of women migrant workers. So too, does differential treatment on the part of health care providers against women migrant workers seeking medical treatment for SRH or when employment contracts prohibit marriage and pregnancies for migrant workers

Enhancing Education - The Student Learning Experience Journey project
The Student Learning Experience Journey (SLEJ) project, an ongoing project under the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics (DCEI), aims to prepare students for their future careers from the beginning of their academic study through a coordination and collaboration framework between academia and industry. The industry partners are Cisco Net Academy, DELL, EC-Council Academia, Epson, IBM Skills Academy, Microsoft Educator, Oracle Academy, T RED HAT Academy, SAS, Toshiba, and The Assembly. This project provides an opportunity for each DCEI student to identify and prepare their career journey by choosing from a pool of 15 learning pathways, each about an IT discipline. Each learning pathway has its corresponding course offerings and certifications from different industry partners. A project of this nature will broadly benefit society and the community at large by fulfilling the demand of producing skilled IT professionals and building a knowledge-based economy
Balad
Balad is a touring stand-up comedy show I co-directed with my PalCom (Palestinian Comedy Club) partner Alaa Shehada, working with Charlotte Knowles (PalCom; Independent Film Trust) and a group of Palestinian performers. Building on our previous work in the region (2016-18; 2019), this show (and an accompanying workshop series) was devised and rehearsed in Ramallah (May 2022; June-July 2022). Balad toured venues in Palestinian cities in July-August 2022. The show features six Palestinian performers from different areas of the West Bank and the '48 Regions coming together to use comedy to explore what it means to be Palestinian today

Discriminator-based adversarial networks for knowledge graph completion
Knowledge graphs (KGs) inherently lack reasoning ability which limits their effectiveness for tasks such as question-answering and query expansion. KG embedding (KGE) is a predominant approach where proximity between relations and entities in the embedding space is used for reasoning over KGs. Most existing KGE approaches use structural information of triplets and disregard contextual information which could be crucial to learning long-term relations between entities. Moreover, KGE approaches mostly use discriminative models which require both positive and negative samples to learn a decision boundary. KGs, by contrast, contain only positive samples, necessitating that negative samples are generated by replacing the head/tail of predicates with randomly-chosen entities. They are thus usually irrational and easily discriminable from positive samples, which can prevent the learning of sufficiently robust classifiers. To address the shortcomings, we propose to learn contextualized KGE using pretrained adversarial networks. We assume multi-hop relational paths(mh-RPs) as textual sequences for competitively learning discriminator-based KGE against the negative mh-RP generator. We use a pre-trained ELECTRA model and feed it with relational paths. We employ a generator to corrupt randomly-chosen entities with plausible alternatives and a discriminator to predict whether an entity is corrupted or not. We perform experiments on multiple benchmark knowledge graphs and the results show that our proposed KG-ELECTRA model outperforms BERT in link prediction
An enabling framework for blockchain in tourism
This viewpoint article proposes an enabling framework that identifies the use of various blockchain technologies in tourism and their applications (digitalization, automation, disintermediation, and intelligent environment) across the different stages of travel (pre-trip, during the trip, and post-trip). As we know, the tourism sector contributes immensely to world GDP and job creation. However, the COVID-19 pandemic, even after two years since it first appeared, continues to adversely impact the tourism prospects of countries across the world due to nationwide lockdowns and travel restrictions. As the world tries to adapt to the “new normal,“ the tourism sector is forced to re-think its ways of doing business and bring about innovations to facilitate the new norms of contactless and safe transactions. Also, the sector, more than ever, need to effectively deal with its inherent challenges such as transparency and credibility of information, fraudulent practices, opportunistic behavior of intermediaries, and foreign currency risks. Blockchain technology can transform the tourism sector by offering innovative solutions that address its pressing issues. However, our current understanding of blockchain application in tourism is quite limited, with previous work being largely fragmented and narrow in terms of both scope and application. We foresee that the insights offered in this viewpoint, including the framework, will advance both theory and practice and facilitate the implementation of blockchain-enabled solutions across different travel stages
Who wants a radical nursing curriculum?
At the time when the dialogue that forms the substance of this chapter took place, the early 2020s, a pandemic had forced many to carry out their activities by means of distant computer links rather than in person on either side of a table, real or metaphorical. Dialogues such as this relied upon not always reliable devices and systems—microphones, network connections and software. In addition, human factors often injected an element of unpredictability into encounters and discussion, prominent among these the tendency of some to forget to ‘unmute’ their microphone. Our interlocutors revisit some basic and deceptively simple questions about nurses, nursing work, the training and education of nurses, and the work of those who educate and research nurses. Underlying their discussion are the twin concepts of values and complexity. Their main focus was on nurse education in the United Kingdom but occasionally they looked to the education of nurses in other countries and regions for comparison. Their intention, or to be more accurate, the intention of one of the interlocutors, was that the asking and answering of a series of questions might stimulate critical thinking and draw out underlying presuppositions regarding this topic. How far this aim was achieved is a matter for the reader to decide. The subheadings were introduced in an attempt to give structure to a sometimes wide-ranging discussion
Explanation by automated reasoning using the Isabelle Infrastructure framework
In this paper, we propose the use of interactive theorem proving for explainable machine learning. After informally motivating our proposition, we illustrate it on the dedicated application of explaining security attacks using the Isabelle Infrastructure framework and its pro- cess of dependability engineering. This formal framework and process provides the logics for specification and modeling. Attacks on security of the system are explained by specification and proofs in the Isabelle Infrastructure framework. Existing case studies of dependability engineering in Isabelle are used as feasibility studies to illustrate how different aspects of explanations are covered by the Isabelle Infrastructure framework. Finally, we propose a research agenda on how first-class ex- planation integrated with automated reasoning will solve the problem
Pagets and Westmacotts in the Mediterranean
At the gateway to the Mediterranean, in Gibraltar’s King’s Chapel, is sited an intriguing marble funerary monument to a distinguished British naval officer. The small, easily overlooked memorial to the Hon. William Paget was installed after the end of 1794 following the untimely death of this young officer off the coast of Minorca, on the Romney, the ship he captained in several local victories. While relatively simple in design, it bears a long and fulsome dedicatory inscription and the signature of the London-based sculptor, Richard Westmacott the Younger. Works by this artist, second and most renowned in a family dynasty of eminent craftsmen, tend to be little known outside Britain, appearing infrequently in foreign settings, and his commission to memorialise a member of a prominent British family represents a unique conjunction of art, aristocracy and naval achievement in the Mediterranean. A number of connections are drawn from this conjunction to highlight the neglected significance of this seemingly modest monument
