    "Building back better": seeking an equitable return to sport for development in the wake of COVID-19

    The COVID-19 pandemic affected sport programming by restricting in-person activities. Concurrently, global outcry for racial justice for Black and racialized communities promoted calls-to-action to assess equitable practices in sport, including Sport for Development (SfD). This study critically examined SfD ‘return to play’ programming to include perspectives from racialized persons’ lived experiences. We present findings based on data collected from MLSE Foundation’s Change the Game (CtG) research, which explored questions of sport inequity to ‘build back better’. Outcomes further SfD discourses challenging (potentially) harmful structures affecting participants, including under reported effects of racialization. The study used a mixed-method methodology with quantitative analysis of survey data, and thematic analysis of personal experience within an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and decolonial conceptual framework

    Establishment and characterization of single and triple‐agent resistant osteosarcoma cell lines

    Two human osteosarcoma cell lines (MG-63 and HOS-143B) are developed into drug-resistant models using a short-term drug exposure and recovery in drug-free media. Cisplatin, doxorubicin, and methotrexate are used as single agents and in triple combination. The highest level of resistance to cisplatin is observed in MG-63/CISR8, doxorubicin in HOS-143B/DOXR8, and methotrexate in HOS-143B/MTXR8. The MG-63/TRIR8 and HOS-143B/TRIR8 tripleresistance models show lower levels of resistance to combination treatment and are not resistant to the drugs individually. Apoptosis assays suggest that the resistance in MG-63/TRIR8 isfrom cisplatin and methotrexate and not doxorubicin. In contrast, the resistance in HOS-143B/TRIR8 is from doxorubicin and methotrexate instead of cisplatin. Upregulation of P-glycoprotein is seen in all resistant models except those developed with single-agent methotrexate. However, P-glycoprotein is not causing resistance in all cell lines as the inhibitor elacridar only reverses the resistance of doxorubicin on MG-63/ DOXR8 and HOS-143B/TRIR8. The migration of the MG-63 resistant models is significantly increased, their invasion rate tends to increase, and RT-PCR shows a switch from epithelial to mesenchymal gene signaling. In contrast, a significant decrease in migration is seen in HOS-143B resistant models with their invasion rate tending to decrease and a switch from mesenchymal to epithelial gene signaling

    Alternate leg bounding acutely improves change of direction performance in women’s team sports players irrespective of ground type

    This study aimed to assess whether post-warm-up body mass only alternate leg bounding performed on grass or a hard surface acutely improves pre-planned change of direction performance in women’s team sports players relative to a control condition and, if so, profile the time-course of such changes. On three occasions, 14 amateur women’s team sports players performed 20 m pre-planned change of direction (‘Pro-Agility’) tests at 4 min, 8 min, and 12 min following interventions. Interventions were implemented immediately after a standardized warm-up and consisted of three sets of 10 repetitions of alternate leg bounding (five ground contacts per limb) on a hard indoor surface (HARD) or natural grass (GRASS), or a control condition involving ~75 s of continuous walking with no bounding (CON). Performance was similar between conditions at 4 min post-intervention. Performance at 8 min was greater in HARD (2.9%, p = 0.015), and GRASS (3.8%, p = 0.029) relative to CON, whilst GRASS also exceeded CON at 12 min post-bounding (5.2%, p = 0.004). All effects were large. No differences existed between HARD and GRASS at any timepoint. Alternate leg bounding performed with body mass only can acutely improve indices of change of direction performance in women’s team sports players irrespective of the ground surface when an appropriate post-stimulus recovery period is provided. Bounding on grass or a hard surface represents a feasible match-day practice that enhances subsequent change of direction performance and could therefore be used as part of practically applicable pre-match, half-time, and/or pitch-side (re)warm-up activities

    Dr. Loraine Leeson will talk about some of the lessons learned through the span of her art practice that encompasses activist work from the 1970s/80s, projects with communities and young people in the 1990s, experiments with new technology and collectivity in the new millennium, and more recent engagement with older people and environmental issues. Central to Leeson’s work have been processes of collaboration and participation that have lent cultural dimensions to activism and brought community-based knowledge into the public domain. She will discuss how early lessons learned from working alongside the trades union movement and the campaigning communities of London’s Docklands informed subsequent engagement with a range of groups, organisations and individuals, drawing on new technologies as they emerged to enable these voices to be heard. Lastly Leeson will indicate how these lessons now inform interdisciplinary research that draws on the arts to address issues of global significance

    Time to consider the potential role of alternative resistance training methods in cancer management?

    Exercise has emerged as fundamental therapeutic medicine in the management of cancer. Exercise improves health-related outcomes including quality of life, neuromuscular strength, physical function and body composition, and is associated with a lower risk of disease recurrence and increased survival. Moreover, exercise during or post-cancer treatments is safe, can ameliorate treatment-related side effects, and may enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. To date, traditional resistance training (RT) is the most used RT modality in exercise oncology. However, alternative training modes, such as eccentric, cluster set, and blood flow restriction are gaining increased attention. These training modalities have been extensively investigated in both athletic and clinical populations (e.g., age-related frailty, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes), showing considerable benefits in terms of neuromuscular strength, hypertrophy, body composition, and physical function. However, these training modes have only been partially or not at all investigated in cancer populations. Thus, we outline the benefits of these alternative RT methods in patients with cancer. Where evidence in cancer populations is sparse, we provide a robust rationale for the possible implementation of certain RT methods, where results have been positive in other clinical populations. Finally, we provide clinical insights for research which may help future RT investigations in patients with cancer and suggest clear practical applications for targeted cancer populations and related benefits

    When challenges hinder: An investigation of buyer-imposed stressors on supplier flexibility

    Working with buyers may drive business growth but can also induce supplier stress. Drawing on Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) theory, this study explored how buyer-imposed work stressors affect supplier flexibility. Employing a scenario-based experiment involving 338 managers, we found that the imposition of challenge stressors increases supplier flexibility when hindrance stressors are low. Conversely, when hindrance stressors are high, imposing challenge stressors reduces supplier flexibility. We also found that supplier bricolage negatively moderates the relationship between buyer-imposed challenge stressors and supplier flexibility. Specifically, we confirmed that suppliers with higher bricolage are less willing to provide flexibility in response to challenge stressors. For practitioners, our study not only identified the type of work stressors they should impose on suppliers to boost flexibility but also highlighted bricolage as an important moderating factor
