    Comment piece: The inspection of Offender Management in Custody – new resettlement policy, same old problems

    Two Inspection reports regarding the latest resettlement policy - Offender Management in Custody (OMiC) - have recently been published (HM Probation Inspectorate and HM Prison Inspectorate, 2022; HM Inspectorate of Probation, 2023). This comment piece provides a brief analysis of these inspection reports, which demonstrates how OMiC is undermined by five issues, including: a fixed and fragmented model of delivery; poor identification of needs and service provision; poor quality keywork; understaffing in prisons and probation; and finally, poor communication between prison and probation practitioners. This comment piece then places these failures into context, asserting that there has been a longstanding ‘common thread’ of issues that has undermined past resettlement policies, and that these have permeated through to OMiC. This commentary concludes by suggesting a possible way forward with the OMiC model, noting that no resettlement policy will be successful unless the staffing crisis in prisons and probation is resolved, and the practitioners responsible for OMiC are provided with sufficient time and resources to provide quality resettlement support

    Land use change on the surface area and the influence on carbon

    China has diversified landforms, the three-dimensional space area check is more accurate to help determine China’s land use change and the caused carbon variations. This study explored a new method to check China’s surface area and examine the terrestrial carbon changes for the period of 2000–2020. The results show that China’s surface area increased by 13.9% compared with the planar area, with the increased area measuring 133 × 104 km2. The south and the west, especially the southwest, usually have a high area increasing rate. Woodland has the highest area increasing rate for all the provinces. 10% of the land had its land use type changed. Cropland, grassland and unused show total land area decrease, woodland, water, and impervious all increased. The mean increasing rate of land transfer on surface area varied between 1.39% and 38.84%. The total amount of land use-type change caused carbon loss reached − 5907.44 × 104 t, of − 3168.97 × 104 t from vegetation storage loss, − 2738.77 × 104 t from NPP and water. There were only seven provinces show carbon increase, which were more located in the west. Per unit of woodland loss will cause higher carbon release than other land use types. Land use control need to be further strengthened, especially for the protection of woodland at mountain regions

    ADAMTS13 activity: Screening test protocol

    Accurate estimation of ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin-like and metalloprotease with thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13) activity level is necessary for diagnosis and management of thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA). In particular, it permits distinction between thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and other TMAs, prompting disorder appropriate treatment. Manual and automated quantitative assays of ADAMTS13 activity are commercially available, some providing results within less than an hour, but they require specialist equipment and personnel and tend to only be available in specialized diagnostic facilities. Technoscreen ADAMTS13 Activity is a rapid, commercially available, semiquantitative screening test employing flow-through technology and an ELISA activity assay principle. It is a simple to perform screening tool, not requiring specialist equipment or personnel. The colored end point is compared to a reference color chart containing four color intensity indicators corresponding to ADAMTS13 activity levels of 0, 0.1, 0.4, or 0.8 IU/mL. Reduced levels detected in the screening test should be confirmed by quantitative assay. The assay lends itself to use in nonspecialized laboratories, remote, and point-of-care settings

    E-waste and metal contamination in the environment: health effects

    It is predicted that electronic waste (e-waste) derived principally from discarded electronic equipment will reach 74 million metric tonnes by 2030. In addition, urbanization and industrialization have contributed to metal contamination in the environments. E-waste is often deposed of in low-income countries adversely affecting the health of the working population. The main sources of e-contamination are soil, dust, and food matrices. Drinking water can also be contaminated with heavy metals such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) causing a major health concern. Exposure to pollutants present in waste has a significant detrimental impact on human health; children in developing countries are often particularly susceptible. Sensitive monitoring procedures are needed to improve the rate of detection and monitoring of the possible adverse effects on the population exposed to significant quantities of e-waste

    Sociology, labour and transition in post-Soviet Russia: a view from within

    For almost 20 years, since the early 1990s, Professor Simon Clarke led multiple international research projects in Russia, China and Vietnam studying labour relations, enterprise restructuring and household economics under post-socialist transition. Breaking out of post-socialist scholarship’s narrow confines, both social and ideological, he led an exploration of the void opened by former Soviet Union disintegration reconnecting with those who brought the brunt of it. Equally unique among western scholars was his promotion of a vast network of former Soviet Union researchers and activists, later formalised in the Institute for Comparative Research in Labour Relations. Here, for the first time, some of its leading scholars reflect on his legacy, methods and ever-lasting contribution to the advancement of sociology and social activism in Russia. Their accounts convey the radically alternative character of the overall project, returning both achievements and limitations. In substantive terms, the emerging picture confirms the indeterminacy and complexity of Clarke’s original findings: no linear development from ‘the subsumption of labour under capital’ to ‘familiar patterns of class conflict’ has occurred. Instead, growing labour protests follow labour degradation and restructuring, a strong state becoming the arbiter in the stand-off between neoliberalism and workers’ resistance

    Physiological demands of fencing: a narrative review

    Background and Aim Fencers compete over long competition days (9-11 hours) wearing full body protective clothing whilst performing high-intensity explosive movements interspersed with low intensity preparatory or recovery movements. Therefore the aim of this review is to provide contemporary perspectives of the literature discussing the physiological and thermoregulatory demands of fencing to inform training, competition, and recovery practices. Methods Research articles were searched through three online databases (Pubmed, SPORTDiscus, and Google Scholar; 1985-2022) and included results discussing physiological demands for all three weapons (epée, foil, and sabre). Results The physiological demands of fencing performance are high and increase as fencers move from Poule fights to knockout Direct Elimination fights. Fencers compete at 75-100% of maximum heart rate, and ~75% maximal oxygen consumption in Direct Elimination fights. Fencing performance is reliant on the phosphocreatine and aerobic energy systems as shown through low blood lactate concentrations. Considerable variation in distance covered during competition is generally reported (i.e., 435 to 1652m in Direct Elimination fights). Despite fencers competing in full body protective clothing with a potentially large thermoregulatory challenge only one study has examined thermoregulatory responses during fencing whereby fencers’ gastrointestinal temperature can peak at >39°C. Conclusions Future research highlighted by the findings of this review includes studies of all weapon types especially foil and sabre, during actual competitive environments. Thermoregulatory responses of fencing need to be determined including measures of skin temperature, mask temperature (as a measure of micro-climates) and thermal sensation, allowing for appropriate cooling strategies to be applied between fights to maintain or improve performance. Practical Applications A greater understanding of the physiological demands of fencing performance will allow athletes, coaches, and practitioners to design training to prepare athletes for competition and allow fencing specific protocols to be developed to determine recovery strategies within fencing
