The many facets of inhibitory control and their role in syntactic selection

    Get PDF
There is accumulating evidence that distinct forms of domain-general inhibition underlie selection of lexical candidates from among co-activated representations in single word production. It is less clear whether similar control processes are engaged in resolution of syntactic conflict in sentence production. This study assessed the relative contribution of three types of inhibitory control operating at different stages of information processing to syntactic interference resolution in an active/passive voice production task. Inhibition of response execution (the anti-saccade effect) and resolution of representational conflict (the flanker effect) were related to the occurrence of repairs as well as sentence onset latencies in passive voice trials. The results suggest not only that general-purpose mechanisms may be in place that resolve conflict regardless of whether it stems from syntactic or non-syntactic (non-verbal) representations, but also that they operate at dissociable processing stages

2023 elections in Turkey within global context: right wing populism in the era of global shift

    Get PDF
Many observers predicted that the catastrophic earthquake of February 2023 and huge and unprecedent problems of high inflation and cost of living crisis would end Erdogan era and his credibility in Turkey. However, despite all ongoing deep problems, Erdogan and his AKP government, after more than 20 years in power, still managed to win the 2023 elections in the second round. It seems none of the serious economic and political problems were enough to get the majority of votes away from the governing party, AKP. Even in the cities where the earthquake costed high level of damage, AKP and Erdogan got significantly high votes, despite rampant corruption and economic mismanagement. The AKP government has not been punished either economically or politically. On the contrary, one of the most striking consequences of this election is that Turkey now has the most right-wing parliament in its recent modern history if we include the right-wing opposition parties in the composition

A narrative review of the most demanding scenarios in basketball: Current trends and future directions

    Get PDF
Since the analysis of most demanding scenarios (MDS) in basketball has improved the practical knowledge about match demands and possible impacts for the training process, it seems important to summarize the scientific evidence providing useful information and future directions related to MDS. Specifically, basketball coaching and strength and conditioning staffs. This review assesses the results reflected in the available literature about the MDS in basketball, synthesizing and discussing data from 12 scientific papers, and then providing relevant insights about terminology, sex and sample size, competition category, workload variables recorded, technology used, method of calculation, time windows analyzed, and activities evaluated related to MDS. Therefore, the present narrative review would be of utility for coaches, scientists, athletes and strength and conditioning trainers exploring the current trends and future directions related to MDS in basketball

Creole identity: a post-colonial research in contemporary Mauritius

    No full text
The highly stratified creole community in contemporary Mauritius is undergoing a significant ethnic identity crisis spurred by racialised divisions and class categorisations. This thesis specifically examines the residualisation of a persecuted creole sub-group, the ‘ti-creoles’ who have claimed ‘malaise creole’ in the aftermath of a creolisation process. This group has been enclaved into degraded slums in the outer urban suburbs. This research also considers the creoles’ problematic contribution to wider creolisation in Mauritius (i.e., socio-cultural changes, the entanglement of cultures, transculturation, and miscegenation). This research examines creoles and non-creoles’ perceptions of marginalisation and categorisation. This includes the impact of racism and stereotyping in contemporary Mauritius, including how creole identity construction is shaped by race, class and politics. It also considers how ‘malaise creole’ is textually and narratively associated with identity, ethnicity, and marginalisation. This research uses thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) within a social constructionist epistemology. Social constructivism and indigenous research theories foreground the impacts of ‘malaise creole’ on creoles’ identity construction. This research critically analyses participants’ accounts, narratives, and positions as expressed through interviews, and document analysis. The data consists of 35 semi-structured interviews and a document analysis of two publications. Thirty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted with creoles of different geographical locations, genders, and ages (ranging from 20 years to 60 years). Ten additional interviews were conducted with creole and non-creole professionals from urban peripheries and the coastal region of Riviere Noire on the northwest coast. The document analysis included official and unofficial documents, position papers, academic research, local histories, press and media articles, speeches, archival records, and policy documents. The findings will help scholars better understand creole outlooks, rationales, attitudes, and perceptions. The research also seeks to catalyse positive changes in social policy and public opinion as an advocacy reference document

Automation techniques for smart and sustainable agriculture and its challenges

    Get PDF
In the contemporary scenario, the world is primarily focused on trends and technology that leads to intelligent and accurate results in every field. Automation of everything has come up as a necessary demand due to this reason. Things are automated wherever possible. Agriculture is also one such field where automation has acquired much popularity. With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, integration of various tools and technologies like IoT, Deep Learning, cloud, etc., has led to the development of several automated agriculture systems, generally termed as "Smart and Sustainable Agriculture". Motivated by this fact, a comparative study of state-of-the-art approaches for Smart and Sustainable Agriculture systems using automated devices is presented in this paper. To build the basics, the paper discusses the Smart and Sustainable agriculture systems techniques for the automation of the agriculture systems. The next section presents the relative performance of different approaches. At last, the upcoming challenges and future work directions in this field are discussed next

Entrepreneur gatekeepers and adaptors of knowledge in emerging food processing clusters in Ghana

    No full text
Development, prosperity and sustainable livelihoods in Africa requires knowledge and technology adapted to local contexts. This paper argues that entrepreneur gatekeepers within developing economy clusters can become potent conduits for adapting technology but research overlooks their role, particularly when they are operating as part of the informal economy. This study therefore addresses this knowledge gap through a qualitative empirical study of two food processing clusters in Ghana. Gatekeepers are identified as those entrepreneurs who bring tacit and codified knowledge to be shared throughout a cluster, and also adapt technology to local contexts. The informal nature of the African economy shapes these processes with knowledge shared through personal trust based relationships, the movement of labour between businesses and work of artisan engineers who adapt technology. Innovation support in an African context therefore needs to work with these entrepreneur gatekeepers as well as larger companies and public institutions

The quantum path kernel: a generalized neural tangent kernel for deep quantum machine learning

    Get PDF
Building a quantum analog of classical deep neural networks represents a fundamental challenge in quantum computing. A key issue is how to address the inherent non-linearity of classical deep learning, a problem in the quantum domain due to the fact that the composition of an arbitrary number of quantum gates, consisting of a series of sequential unitary transformations, is intrinsically linear. This problem has been variously approached in the literature, principally via the introduction of measurements between layers of unitary transformations. In this paper, we introduce the Quantum Path Kernel, a formulation of quantum machine learning capable of replicating those aspects of deep machine learning typically associated with superior generalization performance in the classical domain, specifically, hierarchical feature learning. Our approach generalizes the notion of Quantum Neural Tangent Kernel, which has been used to study the dynamics of classical and quantum machine learning models. The Quantum Path Kernel exploits the parameter trajectory, i.e. the curve delineated by model parameters as they evolve during training, enabling the representation of differential layer-wise convergence behaviors, or the formation of hierarchical parametric dependencies, in terms of their manifestation in the gradient space of the predictor function. We evaluate our approach with respect to variants of the classification of Gaussian XOR mixtures - an artificial but emblematic problem that intrinsically requires multilevel learning in order to achieve optimal class separation
