From stigma to strategy: advancing the conservation and perception of metazoan parasites
Parasites play essential roles in ecosystems by facilitating biomass transfer, maintaining food web complexity, regulating host populations, and driving evolutionary processes in other species. Yet, they remain among the least protected by wildlife and ecosystem conservation initiatives with Red Listing of parasites being in its infancy. During a workshop on conservation and Red Listing of parasites organised in 2024 (in Belgium), experts undertook a collaborative effort to establish priorities enabling assessment of metazoan parasites of animals. Applying an adapted version of the Nominal Group Technique, we addressed five themes, including ethics and perceptions. Indeed, recent research provides empirical evidence that emotional responses to different species are key factors influencing people's willingness to support conservation efforts, which makes the human perception of parasites a similarly important aspect. The World Archives of Species Perception (WASP) project represents the most extensive and inclusive scientific effort, to date to address the knowledge gap surrounding public perceptions of biodiversity. Building upon the general WASP project methodology, and inspired by the above-mentioned workshop, we developed a spin-off for human perception of parasites (WASP-P), to understand how different traits of individual species across metazoan parasite taxa are perceived by the public and how this can help facilitate more effective conservation. Preliminary results suggest rich patterns in public perception of different parasite species that warrant deeper investigation. The ongoing efforts will provide valuable insights for the IUCN SSC Parasite Specialist Group and contribute to the development of more effective, targeted strategies for parasite conservation and policy engagement globally
Lysosomal stress and cathepsin dysregulation in Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Type 1A
Simulation and validation of scatter radiation measurements in Ultra High Dose Rate (UHDR) irradiations
Evaluating the Effectiveness of Biodiverse Green Schoolyards on Child BMI z-Score and Physical Metrics: A Pilot Quasi-Experimental Study
Background: Childhood obesity is a significant public health issue linked to poor diet, low physical activity, and limited access to supportive environments. Green schoolyards may promote physical activity and improve health outcomes. This study evaluated the impact of the Green Healthy Primary School of the Future (GHPSF) intervention-greening schoolyards-on children's BMI z-scores, waist circumference, and hip circumference over 18 months, and compared these effects to those observed in the earlier Healthy Primary School of the Future (HPSF) initiative. Methods: This longitudinal quasi-experimental study included two intervention and two control schools in Limburg, a province both in the Netherlands and Belgium. Children aged 8-12 years (n = 159) were assessed at baseline, 12 months, and 18 months for anthropometric outcomes. Linear mixed models were used to estimate intervention effects over time, adjusting for sex, age, country, and socioeconomic background. Standardized effect sizes (ESs) were calculated. Results: The intervention group showed a greater reduction in BMI z-scores at 12 months (ES = -0.15, p = 0.084), though this was not statistically significant. Waist circumference increased in both groups, but less so in the intervention group, at 12 months (ES = -0.23, p = 0.057) and 18 months (ES = -0.13, p = 0.235). Hip circumference and waist-hip ratio changes were minimal and non-significant. GHPSF effect sizes were comparable to or greater than those from the HPSF initiative. Conclusions: Though not statistically significant, trends suggest that greening schoolyards may support favorable changes in anthropometric outcomes. Further research with larger samples and longer follow-up is recommended.Funding:

Letie Unfolded: A Relational Movement to Empower Flemish Mental Health Nursing and a Tribute to Hildegard Peplau
This paper outlines a strategic approach to strengthen the expertise and skills of mental health nurses. It addresses the ongoing (r)evolutions in how generic nursing standards are being integrated into nursing curricula. Focusing on Flanders in Belgium, it explores the decline of specialised mental health nursing education and its implications for advanced practice nursing at the master's level. Central to this discussion is 'Letie', a newly established Belgian non-profit organisation founded in 2023. Letie aims to inspire and empower professional cohesion within mental health nursing by fostering collaboration, innovation, knowledge sharing, research and professional development. Reflecting on Letie's first year of operation, the paper draws on the author's experiences and vision to propose pathways for advancing the profession, while promoting resilience and adaptability in the face of educational and professional challenges. It seeks to engage mental health nursing professionals working in clinical practice, education and research in a meaningful dialogue about future directions for the discipline. The authors received no specific funding for this work

The Wii-Volution in Rehabilitation, A Legacy Interrupted
This perspective explores the transformative impact of the Nintendo Wii on rehabilitation practices and the challenges arising from its discontinuation. The Wii's motion-sensing technology revolutionized rehabilitation by providing an engaging, low-cost and accessible platform for various patient populations. Its success catalysed the development of serious games and exergames specifically designed and adapted for therapeutic purposes. Research has demonstrated the Wii's efficacy in improving balance, motor function, and patient engagement across multiple conditions, including stroke, Parkinson's disease, and cerebral palsy. However, the Wii's discontinuation has created a significant void in the rehabilitation landscape, raising concerns about the sustainability of technology-driven therapies. This non-empirical paper examines the Wii's novelty, its influence on rehabilitation techniques, and the critical need for innovative solutions to address the gap left by its absence. We emphasize the importance of continued collaboration between the gaming and healthcare industries to develop accessible, affordable, and effective rehabilitation technologies that build upon the Wii's legacy
