The value of neighborhood greenspace for children using the life satisfaction approach - presentation IHEA conference

    No full text
Across the globe, urbanization is increasing, intensifying the pressure on greenspaces, which affects all its users, including children. This is potentially concerning since exposure to nature enhances children's health and well-being. With regard to well-being, while robust evidence is present on the positive relationship between exposure to nature and well-being of children, currently no monetary valuation of the well-being benefits exists, making them more difficult to appropriately include in public decision-making regarding greenspace development. This study, for the first time, puts a monetary value on neighborhood greenspace exposure for children using the life satisfaction approach (LSA). This approach has been employed for the monetary valuation of environmental goods and issues but has not been extended yet to value the well-being of children. The LSA quantifies the influence of neighborhood greenspace on children's life satisfaction (LS) and compares it to the impact of other determinants of their LS that can be valued in monetary terms. In that way, the LSA calculates the amount of money to offset a change in neighborhood greenspace to keep the child at the same level of LS. As a result, the LSA does not require children or their parents to assign monetary values themselves. Data were gathered from 475 parent-child pairs in 29 different primary schools in Flanders (age range of children 10-12). The monetary value will be determined based on the tradeoff between the impact of the exposure of neighborhood greenspace on children’s LS and the impact of household income on children’s LS. The results of the study reveal the monetary value of neighborhood greenspace in terms of improvements in children's self-reported LS

Active minds, active bodies: an exploratory study on embodied learning in autistic students

    No full text
Embodied learning is an innovative pedagogical approach that facilitates knowledge acquisition through physical activity. Empirical research in pre-primary and primary education demonstrates its benefits for memory performance and learning attitudes. However, it is still uncertain whether embodied learning yields similar benefits across all student populations, particularly for students with an autistic profile experiencing motor and dual-task challenges. Given the limited experimental research in secondary autistic students, the current qualitative exploratory study pursued to examine (1) if embodied learning can improve their attention and school-related well-being, and (2) how embodied learning can effectively be implemented in autistic students' classrooms. The study was conducted in three Flemish schools offering secondary special education. In total, 44 autistic students (aged 12-16 years) participated in an embodied learning intervention lasting either three or six weeks. Using a pre-defined questionnaire based on theoretical models, the focus group discussions revealed (1) improved attention when embodied learning involved low-intensity and quiet movements, (2) gains in social connections with peers, and (3) motivation/fun to learn. Key conditions for successful implementation included institutional support, and adaptations to individual student needs. Future research should employ mixed-method designs to more comprehensively assess the impact of embodied learning in autistic students.Funding This work was supported by BOF Hasselt University grant number [BOF22OWB04]. Objective vs perceived sleep in Belgian occupational drivers: A field study

    No full text
Study objective: This prospective, descriptive observational study aimed to investigate objective and subjective sleep among Belgian occupational drivers, focusing on short haul (SHD), long haul (LHD), and local delivery drivers (LDD). Methods: A total of 31 drivers wore a Fitbit Charge 5 for one month to capture total sleep time (TST), time in bed (TIB), sleep efficiency (SE), wakefulness and sleep stage distribution. Subjective sleep was assessed daily using a 5-point scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVAs and Pearson correlations. Results: Drivers averaged 6.2 f 0.7 h of TST and 7.1 f 0.7 h of TIB, with a mean SE of 87.3 f 2.1 %. Sleep stages were distributed as follows: 60.1 f 5.2 % light sleep (LS), 18.0 f 3.3 % deep sleep (DS), 21.2 f 4.2 % REM sleep and 12.8 f 1.8 % of awake. 12.9 % of participants had low DS (<15 %) and 25.8 % had low REM (<20 %). 29.0 % of participants experienced elevated nocturnal wakefulness. One-way ANOVA revealed no significant group differences in most sleep parameters, except for DS (F = 3.47, p = 0.05), with LHD showing the lowest proportion. Subjectively, most drivers rated their sleep from good to neutral. However, one-third reported poor sleep. Modest correlations were found between better subjective sleep and higher DS, TST, and SE. Conclusion: Although SE was adequate, chronic sleep restriction was common. Group differences were minimal, suggesting that individual and environmental factors may outweigh driver type in influencing sleep. Subjective assessments only partially aligned with objective measures, reflecting a discrepancy between perceived and objective sleep. This work was supported by Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship—VLAIO (Vlaams Agentschap Innoveren & Ondernemen; HBC.2021.0387).

Beyond generations: an extended lifespan approach to service segmentation

    No full text
Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to challenge the widespread use of generational segmentation in services marketing and argues for a shift toward an extended lifespan developmental perspective. It highlights how generational thinking can disregard consumer diversity and hinder inclusive service innovation. Design/methodology/approach-This viewpoint synthesized research from marketing and psychology to critically examine the assumptions and limitations of generational segmentation. An extended lifespan-informed approach that focuses on developmental transitions, capabilities and lived experience rather than generational cohorts is proposed. Findings-Three core criticisms of generational segmentation are outlined: a weak theoretical foundation, empirical inconsistency and the risk of misleading practical implications. The authors argue that an extended lifespan perspective enables a more nuanced, inclusive and adaptive service design. This paper provides a practical framework, research agenda and implications for service managers. Originality/value-This paper reconceptualizes segmentation as a developmental and contextual process rather than a static cohort classification. It calls on service researchers and managers to rethink how they categorize customers and to consider the social and economic benefits of more inclusive and adaptive service innovation

    No full text
