Current approaches for training postural control in children with developmental coordination disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    No full text
Aim This study primarily evaluated the effectiveness of postural control training in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) and secondarily mapped targeted postural systems and adherence to DCD guidelines. Methods A systematic search (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus) was conducted. Data on participants, training, postural systems (Anticipatory Postural Adjustments (APA), Reactive Postural Adjustments, Orientation in Space, Control of Dynamics, Sensory Orientation, Biomechanical Factors, Cognitive Functioning), outcome measures, and adherence to DCD guidelines (task-/goal-/context-oriented) were extracted. Effect sizes (ES; Hedges' g) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using a random-effects model. Results Sixteen studies (818 children with DCD; 527 in training) were included, covering twenty training programs: exergaming (n = 7), task-specific (n = 5), sport-specific (n = 4), strength (n = 2), reactive (n = 1), and generic balance (n = 1) training. Compared to no training, postural control training showed large benefits (ES= -1.79, 95 % CI=[-2.37;- 1.14], p < 0.001), however, effects were non-significant when compared between training types (ES: 0.17; CI=[-0.34;0.67]). Most programs targeted up to three postural systems, focusing on APA, Orientation in Space, and Control of Dynamics. Few were goal- or context-specific, limiting adherence to DCD guidelines. Conclusion Large effect sizes indicate beneficial effects for children with DCD after postural control training compared to no training but does not indicate a preference for any type of training. Current training programs lack a multi-systemic approach, potentially limiting effectiveness, and often fail to incorporate goal-oriented and contextspecific elements. These gaps in literature emphasize the need for therapists to consider all postural control systems and DCD guidelines when designing training programsFunding This work was supported by Hasselt University and Special Research Fund (Bijzonder OnderzoeksFonds) [21KP09BOF].

    No full text

Comparative Analysis of QUIC and Other Network Protocols for Real-Time Robotic Control

    No full text

Belgium program Enhancing the uptake and Effectiveness of a Multifactorial falls Prevention intervention in Older community-dWElling peRsons (BE-EMPOWERed): A study protocol

    No full text
Aims This study protocol aims to outline a mixed-methods study of the implementation of the BE-EMPOWERed program in four primary care areas (PCAs) in Flanders. The study assesses implementation processes and outcomes, while exploring its effectiveness on clinical outcomes. Background Despite strong evidence supporting multifactorial falls prevention interventions, their implementation in clinical practice remains limited, contributing to substantial research waste. Systematic implementation science approaches are essential to address this gap. The BE-EMPOWERed program, developed using Intervention Mapping and Implementation Mapping, aims to enhance the uptake and effectiveness of multifactorial falls prevention interventions in older community-dwelling people. The program includes a seven-week group intervention for older people, workshops for healthcare professionals (HCPs), and an implementation plan tailored to PCAs. Methods Two-year mixed-methods study using a convergent parallel design. Qualitative data from focus group interviews and observations will assess implementation outcomes and processes, while quantitative data from a before-and-after study will evaluate the program's effectiveness on fallers, concerns about falling, balance, walking speed and muscle strength and behavior in older people using surveys and tests at multiple time points. Discussion The BE-EMPOWERed program addresses barriers and facilitators in translating evidence into practice, aiming to reduce falls and promote active aging. This study will offer actionable insights, tools for scaling up and evidence-based strategies for future national and international initiatives. It will also contribute to implementation science by demonstrating practical methods for bridging research into practice gaps in community-based falls prevention.Funding This work will be supported by the Flemish Government, Department care. The funding agency has no role in the design of the study, writing the manuscript and the collection, analysis, or interpretation of data. Acknowledgements We would like to thank the expert group of stakeholders, implementation facilitators, group leaders and the participating primary care areas. In addition, we would like to thank prof. dr. em. Lindy Clemson and Megan Swann for the opportunity to learn more about Stepping On and to share their experiences

Characterization of urban mobility behavior in emerging cities of Ethiopia: the case study of Bahir Dar using structural equation modeling

    No full text
An in-depth understanding of travel behavior underpins the development of efficient and sustainable urban transport systems. While several studies have examined aspects of urban mobility in Sub-Saharan Africa, comprehensive and in-depth studies remain limited across most cities in the region. Consequently, many urban contexts in this area are still underexplored, particularly in Ethiopia, the mobility dynamics and the factors that influence it are unknown. Therefore, this study explores the urban mobility behavior of emerging cities and its relationships with individual and household attributes in Bahir Dar. To this end, data was collected through a household travel survey from 2,000 participants, selected using cluster and systematic sampling techniques, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, SEM and curve fitting techniques using SPSS, R, and AMOS. The findings showed that the travel characteristics of residents vary among individuals based on personal and household attributes. Overall, Bahir Dar residents made on average 2.4 daily trips, with a trip rate of 2.5 for men predominantly for work and administrative service purposes, and 2.33 trips undertaken by women mainly for shopping, social affairs and health purposes. Demographically, females, the elderly and relatively young group of populations tended to make fewer and shorter distance travels compared to other groups. The results of the structural equation model have proved the relationships between identified characteristics of travelers and their travel behavior. As a result, transport system attributes (beta = 0.98), economic characteristics (beta = 0.96), household size (beta = 0.96), and number of workers in households (beta = 0.94) were key factors influencing travel behavior in emerging cities. However, gender, possession of a driving license, and land use variables were found to be less significant in determining the travel behavior of residents. Besides filling the research gap, this study recommends the consideration of travel variations among different socio-demographic and economic groups when developing various city plans, policies and traffic management interventions.Funding The author(s) declare that financial support was received for the research and/or publication of this article. The authors acknowledge that the household travel survey data used in this study was funded by the Integrated Urban Mobility (INUMO) project, which is financed by Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (BUW), Germany.

Psychiatric Symptomatology in Frontotemporal Dementia: Hallucinations and Delusions in C9orf72 versus Non-C9orf72 Patients

    No full text

    No full text

Epidemiology of Post-craniotomy Hypertension and Its Association With Adverse Outcome(s): A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    No full text
After intracranial surgery, sympathetic overdrive and increased blood catecholamine levels can contribute to postoperative hypertension, a significant clinical problem. The objective of this review was to summarize, quantify, and assess the epidemiological perspective of post-craniotomy hypertension and its association with adverse outcomes. This PROSPERO-registered systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. We searched electronic databases for studies that investigated adult patients who had elective craniotomy for any indication and reported hypertension within 72 hours postoperatively. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Twenty-one studies, including 2602 patients, were identified for inclusion in this review. Multiple thresholds and criteria for defining post-craniotomy hypertension were used across studies. The pooled incidence of post-craniotomy hypertension from 13 studies (2279 patients) was 30% [95% CI, 15%-50%]. Post-craniotomy hypertension was associated with a 2.6 times higher risk of having an intracerebral hemorrhage within 72 hours after surgery (pooled risk ratio, 2.63; 95% CI, 1.16-5.97). There were insufficient data to investigate the quantitative association of post-craniotomy hypertension with 30-day adverse events. In summary, 1 out of 3 patients exhibited hypertension post-craniotomy, and this was associated with a significantly higher risk of having intracranial hemorrhage within 72 hours post-procedure. A generally accepted and clinically relevant criteria for post-craniotomy hypertension should be defined. The authors thank Susanna Galbraith, BA, MLIS (Virtual Services Librarian, Health Sciences Library, McMaster), for her help in designing the search strateg
