Enrolling Local Strategic Actors in Public Portal Development
The focus of this paper is on seemingly mundane but essential aspects of
network formation between actors in E-government contexts. It is based on a
qualitative case study of portal development in public healthcare. The
theoretical framework applied is Actor-Network Theory (ANT). The research
question is: What factors contribute to the enrolment of strategic local actors
in technology development in E-government? It was found that seemingly simple
but basic functionalities like e.g. information about illnesses, rights,
healthcare providers as well as personal e-services were of strategic
importance for enrolling local actors to the process and to the portal, serving
as a kind of “enrolment devices.” The reason is their capacity to provide
useful functionality and communicate usefulness. Due to the complexity of the
environment, local support based on perceived and future usefulness as well as
long-term project organization safeguarding future development were seen as
critical success factors
Detecting Scareware by Mining Variable Length Instruction Sequences
Scareware is a recent type of malicious software that may pose financial and
privacy-related threats to novice users. Traditional countermeasures, such as
anti-virus software, require regular updates and often lack the capability of
detecting novel (unseen) instances. This paper presents a scareware detection
method that is based on the application of machine learning algorithms to learn
patterns in extracted variable length opcode sequences derived from instruction
sequences of binary files. The patterns are then used to classify software as
legitimate or scareware but they may also reveal interpretable behavior that is
unique to either type of software. We have obtained a large number of real
world scareware applications and designed a data set with 550 scareware
instances and 250 benign instances. The experimental results show that several
common data mining algorithms are able to generate accurate models from the
data set. The Random Forest algorithm is shown to outperform the other
algorithms in the experiment. Essentially, our study shows that, even though
the differences between scareware and legitimate software are subtler than
between, say, viruses and legitimate software, the same type of machine
learning approach can be used in both of these dissimilar cases

Den här publikationen består av tre berättelser från BTH/MAM:s akade-miska
verkstad.
Etablerade former för att redovisa den kunskapsutveckling som högskolan bidrar
till är studentuppsatser, forskningsrapporter, veten-skapliga artiklar,
föredrag och böcker. Betydligt mer sällan än på ”den gamla goda tiden” händer
det att akademiker deltar i det bredare offentliga samtalet. Man kan fråga sig
varför. Är den akademiska verksamheten alltför specialiserad, den bredare
bildnings- och medborgarskapstraditionen ett minne blott? Är incitamenten för
att meritera sig alltför svaga eller finns det andra orsaker och förklaringar?
I förordet till denna skrift, den första i en serie, vill jag uppmärksamma att
texter från högskolans verksamhet kan - och bör - se olika ut. Kunskapen har
många språk för att använda ett uttryck av som tidigare medarbetare (Åke Uhlin)
myntade vid det som nu är sektionen för Management.
Inte minst det faktum att högskolan sedan några decennier har blivit ålagd och
tagit på sig uppgiften att samverka med det omgivande samhället, tvingar fram
nya verksamhetsformer och nya sätt att offentligt redovisa resultaten av denna
samverkan. Rimligtvis kommer inriktningen att kräva texter av annat slag än
gängse akademiska uppsatser. Och säkerligen kommer texter, filmer,
demonstrationer av verksamheter ”in real life”, uppvisande av prototyper,
inspelningar och åtskilligt annat att rymmas inom högskolans offentliga
publikationsformer. I dag finns det andra vägar än den tryckta skriften att
”bringa något till allmän kännedom”, en definition av ordet publikation i
Svenska Akademiens Ordbok (SAOB).
Samverkan med det omgivande samhället har börjat föra med sig ett nytt innehåll
i högskolans verksamhet. Det är högst sannolikt att också formerna för texterna
från den akademiska verkstaden kommer att finna nya vägar.
I detta nummer av FoU handlar texterna om ekonomi, innovationer och lärande.
Bidragen är olikartade, men en sak har de gemensamt: de ger en inblick i MAM:s
akademiska verksamhet, projekt, forskning och utveckling. Eva Lövståls bidrag
är en populärvetenskaplig sammanfattning av hennes avhandling. Peter Stevrins
text bygger på ett föredrag vid ett seminarium, i vilket han redogör för
innovationsverksamhet han har bedrivit vid sidan av sin lärargärning i
företagsekonomi. En slags enpersonssamverkan kan man säga mellan
högskolelektorn och uppfinnaren/entreprenören. Johanna Börrefors uppsats
handlar om lärande, och om dess kontext av utbildning och undervisning. Hon är
rättssociolog och praktiskt verksam lektor som har författat en transdiciplinär
text om pedagogik
Towards Sustainability-driven Innovation through Product-Service Systems
Many current sustainability considerations in industry constrain design space
by emphasizing reduced material and energy flows across product life cycles.
However, there are also opportunities for sustainability awareness to extend
design space and drive innovation. Product-service systems (PSS) in particular
can be a vehicle through which sustainability-driven innovation occurs. A
framework for strategic sustainable development, including a backcasting
approach, provides the basis for understanding sustainability in this work and
provides insight into how incremental and radical approaches could be aligned
within product innovation. This work explores how sustainability considerations
can be better integrated into existing product innovation working environments,
with an emphasis on opportunities that occur as sustainability knowledge leads
to innovation through a product-service system approach. It is demonstrated and
ideas are discussed around how sustainability can be used to drive innovation
processes through product-service systems that companies rely upon, while also
supporting global society’s movement toward sustainability
Using Eye Tracking for Interaction
The development of cheaper eye trackers and open source software for eye
tracking and gaze interaction brings the possibility to integrate eye tracking
into everyday use devices as well as highly specialized equipment. Apart from
providing means for analyzing eye movements, eye tracking also offers the
possibility of a natural user interaction modality. Gaze control interfaces are
already used within assistive applications for disabled users. However, this
novel user interaction possibility comes with its own set of limitations and
challenges. The aim of this SIG is to provide a forum for Designers,
Researchers and Usability Professionals to discuss the role of eye tracking as
a user interaction method in the future as well as the technical and user
interaction challenges that using eye tracking as an interaction method brings
User-oriented Assessment of Classification Model Understandability
This paper reviews methods for evaluating and analyzing the understandability
of classification models in the context of data mining. The motivation for this
study is the fact that the majority of previous work has focused on increasing
the accuracy of models, ignoring user-oriented properties such as
comprehensibility and understandability. Approaches for analyzing the
understandability of data mining models have been discussed on two different
levels: one is regarding the type of the models’ presentation and the other is
considering the structure of the models. In this study, we present a summary of
existing assumptions regarding both approaches followed by an empirical work to
examine the understandability from the user’s point of view through a survey.
The results indicate that decision tree models are more understandable than
rule-based models. Using the survey results regarding understandability of a
number of models in conjunction with quantitative measurements of the
complexity of the models, we are able to establish correlation between
complexity and understandability of the models

Seamless Roaming: Developments and Challenges
The chapter reports on recent developments and challenges focused on seamless
handover. These are subject for the research projects MOBICOME and PERIMETER,
recently granted by the EU EUREKA and EU STREP FP7, respectively. The research
projects are considering the recently advanced IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS),
which is a Set of technology standards put forth by the Internet Engineering
Task Force (IETF) and two Third Generation Partnership Project groups, namely
3GPP and 3GPP2. The foundation of seamless handover is provided by several
components, the most important ones being the handover, mobility management,
connectivity management and Internet mobility. The paper provides an intensive
analysis of these components
Geographical Information Technologies for Road Infrastructure Maintenance in Uganda
This thesis is a documentation of research on Geographical Information
Technologies (GITs) as decision support tools in Road Infrastructure
Maintenance (RIM) in Uganda. The main objective is to develop an operational
framework within which the use of geo-information technologies can be enhanced
as decision support tools in road infrastructure maintenance works of Uganda.
Specifically, the research identifies the gaps and limitations in the use of
and access to GITs for RIM and defines an algorithmic framework to accentuate
the use of GITs in RIM. The research undertook a participatory multifaceted
approach that included a review of documentation both in academia, in form of
articles, journals, books, reports and research theses and also reports and
documents prepared by the road infrastructure maintenance sector. Participant
observations, field visits and measures, interviews and workshops were also
triangularly employed to obtain the inherent answers. Content and GIS analyses
were made to arrive at the findings that are documented in the papers which are
part of the thesis.
The gaps to using GITs in RIM have been found to include the lack of
standardized datasets to address key nation-wide and local maintenance
requirements, challenges on coordinating how geospatial data are acquired and
utilized and the collection of duplicate data sets at the local and national
levels. Also, the present institutional arrangements do not permit the
formation of lasting partnerships and operating under a coordinated GIS
infrastructure. The limitations to access of GITs in the sector include; the
absence of policies for accessibility and standard use of GITs, lack of
infrastructure to support utilization of geographic datasets, unavailability of
and limited accessibility to geographic data, lack of geospatial capacity at
individual and organizational levels and the digital divide. A nondeterministic
algorithmic framework approach to the accentuation of GIT usage in RIM has been
suggested. This framework involves strategies on; developing a policy on data
collection guidelines emphasizing the use of GPS, satellite imagery and GIS,
continuous undertaking of capacity building in the benefits of GIT use and the
science involved, establishment of Local Spatial Data Infrastructures (LSDI)
for road maintenance data and setting aside yearly budgets for the defined
activities. In this framework, the dynamic segmentation data model is
considered a superior data storage strategy for road maintenance data within
the GIS. Dynamic Segmentation is the process of transforming linearly
referenced data (also known as events) that have been stored in a table into
features that can be displayed, queried and analyzed on the map through
computations. It allows for the location of multiple events stored with
linearly referenced attributes without any duplication with route geometry and
in effect supports sharing of network infrastructure with different
application
Damage monitoring of ship FRP during exposure to explosion impacts
Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) has been used by Kockums' shipyard in the
manufacturing of ships over 35 years, during which time is has been proven to
be durable and practical. The light weight makes it a more and more attractive
material as energy and material expenditure decreases are required. A special
application is the Composite Superstructure Concept [1] where composite
materials are added on top of a steel hull, which decreases the weight and
running costs considerably, and makes it possible to even add extra levels
while keeping the same center of gravity.
If efficient condition monitoring systems can keep track of emerging damages of
the structure, the weight may be even more reduced and the interval between
maintenance inspections may be prolonged. As important steps in this process, a
ship mock-up section was subjected to increased levels of explosive underwater
impacts, and the damage progression in the hull was monitored by a nonlinear
acoustic technique
