Gaze Interaction in the Post-WIMP World
With continuous progression away from desktop to post-WIMP applications,
including multi-touch, gestural, or tangible interaction, there is high
potential for eye gaze as a more natural human-computer interface in numerous
contexts. Examples include attention-aware adaptations or the combination of
gaze and hand gestures for interaction with distant displays.
This SIG meeting provides a discussion venue for researchers and practitioners
interested in gaze interaction in the post-WIMP era. We wish to draw attention
to this emerging field and eventually formulate fundamental research questions.
We will discuss the potential of gaze interaction for diverse application
areas, interaction tasks, and multimodal user interface
combinations. Our aims are to promote this research field, foster a larger
research community, and establish the basis for a workshop at CHI 2013
Åtta IKT-projekt för matematiken i skolan - empiri och analys
Denna rapport presenterar empiri och analys av en granskning av åtta projekt
som mottagit medel från Skolverket för att tillämpa IKT i skolans
matematikundervisning. Empirin är organiserad enligt aktivitetsteorin, vilken
sätter relationerna mellan människa, miljö, aktiviteter och mål i förgrunden.
Empirin som presenteras är till stor del sammanställda repliker från lärare och
elever vid intervjuerna, organi¬sera¬de för att belysa verksamhetens olika
relationer. Det betyder att presentationen är till stor del på de verksammas
villkor, och på deras språk.
Ett stort antal konkreta slutsatser framkommer ur detta material. En av dem är
att klass¬upp-sätt¬ningar av datorer är sällan framgångsrika, på grund av att
teknisk support ofta var otillräcklig, och att lärarna inte kan veta hur mycket
eleverna använder datorerna till icke-skol-verk¬sam¬het. Dessa problem finns
inte för interaktiva skrivtavlor. De framstår däremot som ett socialt verktyg,
som gör utbyte och dialog om ämnet lättare att få till stånd. I flera fall
framkom indirekt, men ändå tydligt, att utbildningen på tekniken hade varit
otillräcklig, trots att lärarna inte uttryckte ett tydligt missnöje med den.
Skrivtavlan ökade lärarnas motivation för samarbete. En framåtriktad slutsats
är att en lärargrupp som har ett fungerande samarbete och goda didaktiska,
ämnesmässiga, ledar- och relationella kompe¬tenser med en interaktiv skrivtavla
har en möjlighet att komma längre med elevernas måluppfyllelse
Performance of Cognitive Radio Spectrum Access with Intra- and Inter-Handoff
Opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) is a technology that allows unlicensed
users to access spectrum holes and to provide so efficient use of radio
resources. Most of the studies done on OSA focus on the situation when the
unlicensed user performs the spectrum handoff only within a single cognitive
radio network (so-called intra-handoff). In this paper, we consider the users
(licensed or unlicensed) to be able to do inter-handoff among different
cognitive radio cells as well. The cells provide priority to inter-handoff
users. By considering multiple cells being in steady-state, the arrival rates
of inter-handoff users are determined. We study the OSA performance of
unlicensed users under both intra- and inter-handoff schemes, with respect to
the blocking and forced-termination probabilities of unlicensed users as well
as the unlicensed user service-completion and inter-handoff throughputs. Our

Release Planning with Feature Trees: Industrial Case
[Context and motivation] Requirements catalogues for software release planning
are often not complete and homogeneous. Current release planning approaches,
however, assume such commitment to detail – at least implicitly.
[Question/problem] We evaluate how to relax these expectations, while at the
same time reducing release planning effort and increasing decision-making
flexibility. [Principal ideas/results] Feature trees capture AND, OR, and
REQUIRES relationships between requirements. Such requirements structuring can
be used to hide incompleteness and to support abstraction. [Contribution] The
paper describes how to utilize feature trees for planning the releases of an
evolving software solution and evaluates the effects of the approach on effort,
decision-making, and trust with an industrial case
Re-thinking Innovation Measurement to Manage Innovation-Related Dichotomies in Practice
Innovation performance measurement has developed from focusing on issues of
control and monitoring towards a more supportive role for managers on a
strategic, informative and motivational level. Despite its potential to
facilitate innovation management measuring provides a challenge in practice not
the least when a company has the ambition to manage both radical and
incremental innovation. This paper, based on literature review with empirical
illustrations from three case studies, argues that these issues derives from
the need to manage a number of dichotomies which are present due to the
essential differences associated to each type of innovation. These dichotomies
are related to time, uncertainty, flexibility and control. The implications on
the design and use of an innovation performance measurement system are explored
and analyzed through the lens of dichotomies. The study contributes to the
innovation measurement theory and provides basis for an analytical framework
aiming to support the design and implementation of innovation performance
measurement in practice
Geographic Information Systems for Road Transportation - Data Model for Road Infrastructure Maintenance in Uganda
A lot of data is involved in the planning and management of road maintenance
operations. Since majority of these operations are based on location, a great
deal of this data is spatial in nature. In Uganda, much of this data is stored
as text document files, excel data sheets and video logs. Some organisations
have nevertheless managed to store these data in Microsoft access databases
linked to GIS systems. Even though the structuring of road maintenance data is
not uniform, this data is shared by several organisations and often is required
as archives for future use. Successful data sharing requires a common schema
that is flexible to handle the needs of diverse participants. It is therefore
apparent to have a data model that can boost data exchange between these
organisations. Basing on document review and analysis of existing road
datasets, this paper proposes a data model for road maintenance in Uganda. As
foundation to a feasible data model recommendation, the road network numbering
& referencing system in Uganda is discussed and a review of the nature of road
maintenance data is made. In addition, a review of the fundamental GIS data
models in transportation highlighting their major characteristics, strengths
and weaknesses is made. Dynamic segmentation as an extension to the traditional
arc-node data model is recommended for Uganda. As cited in the paper, several
researchers have found this data model successful in dealing with transport
planning analysis. Due to the multifaceted and varying aspects of road
maintenance data, this model allows for the analysis of precise and high value
spatial resolution segments within the GIS. The location of multiple events can
be stored with linearly referenced attributes without duplication with route
geometry. More importantly, it allows for the sharing of network infrastructure
with several applications for which transport data may be required
An improved adaptive gain equalizer for noise reduction with low speech distortion
In high-quality conferencing systems, it is desired to perform noise reduction
with as limited speech distortion as possible. Previous work, based on time
varying amplification controlled by signal-to-noise ratio estimation in
different frequency subbands, has shown promising results in this regard but
can suffer from problems in situations with intense continuous speech. Further,
the amount of noise reduction cannot exceed a certain level in order to avoid
artifacts. This paper establishes the problems and proposes several
improvements. The improved algorithm is evaluated with several different noise
characteristics, and the results show that the algorithm provides even less
speech distortion, better performance in a multi-speaker environment and
improved noise suppression when speech is absent compared with previous work
Experimental results of passive imaging of moving continuous broadband sound sources within a sensor field
Sparsely distributed sensors or sparse arrays can be associated with high
positional accuracy and capability for large area surveillance. This paper
shows, both through simulations and with real measurement data, that sparse
sensor systems can be used to accomplish high-performance underwater
surveillance. The paper focuses on measurement setups with several passive
single hydrophones placed hundreds of meters apart in a water depth of dozen of
meters. By such a setup, a sound source is more likely to move inside the
array, and thus near-field processing can be considered. The sensor pairs will
also be located in different directions in relation to the sound source. These
two prerequisites give the possibilities to high spatial resolution. Images of
the coherent sound activity for different sensor pairs are formed, and every
sensor pair map is summarized into a resulting map. In this way, an arbitrary
number of sound sources of a target can be resolved. Good correlation results
are shown even when the sound sources are at the same distance as the baseline
of the sensor pairs. This is achieved by Doppler compensating for target
movement and also by whitening of the cross spectra. The analyses of the
measurements also show that baseline-dependent bandwidth can improve the
results. In this paper, it is indicated from experimental data that two
propeller sound sources could be resolved, and in another measurement setup,
the engine could be separated from the propellers
Using P2P Technology to Achieve eHealth Interoperability
Abstract—eHealth is an emerging area that boosts up with
advancement in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Due to variety
of eHealth solutions developed by different IT firms with no unified standards,
interoperability issue has raised. In this paper, a case study in Blekinge
County healthcare organizations has been conducted for understanding the
contexts of eHealth interoperability issues. Then a peer-to-peer (P2P) model
based on JXTA platform is implemented to solve the identified eHealth
interoperability problems. According to the test result of the prototype, the
suggested syntactic level interoperability among healthcare organizations has
been achieved
Adopting free/libre/open source software practices, techniques and methods for industrial use
Today’s software companies face the challenges of highly distributed
development projects and constantly changing requirements. This paper proposes
the adoption of relevant Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) practices in
order to improve software development projects in industry. Many FLOSS projects
have proven to be very successful, producing high quality products with steady
and frequent releases. This study aims to identify FLOSS practices that can be
adapted for the corporate environment. To achieve this goal, a framework to
compare FLOSS and industrial development methodologies was created. Three
successful FLOSS projects were selected as study targets (the Linux Kernel, the
FreeBSD operating system, and the JBoss application server), as well as two
projects from Ericsson, a large telecommunications company. Based on an
analysis of these projects, FLOSS best practices were tailored to fit
industrial development environments. The final results consisted of a set of
key adoption opportunities that aimed to improve software quality and overall
development productivity by importing best practices from the FLOSS
environment. The adoption opportunities were then validated at three large
corporations
