Modulation frequency domain adaptive gain equalizer using convex optimization
Adaptive gain equalizer (AGE) is a commonly used
single-channel speech enhancement algorithm. AGE and its
variants has been widely used for speech enhancement applications.
There are two broad categories of these variants. The
first deals with its improvement in time-frequency domain with
readjustment of the used parameters and the second one deals with performing
the main filtering operation in modulation frequency domain. This paper
evaluates the working of AGE in modulation frequency domain with the use of a
demodulation technique which solves the demodulation process as a convex
optimization problem. The performance of the modified AGE is compared with the
traditional AGE and another modulation frequency domain AGE based on
demodulation using the spectral center-of-gravity. These used performance
measures are Signal to Noise Ratio Improvement(SNRI), Spectral Distortion(SD)
and
Mean Option Score(MOS)
A System for Spectrum Decision in Cognitive Radio Networks
In Cognitive Radio (CR) networks, licensed radio channels are allowed to be
used by Secondary Users (SUs) as long as SUs do not harmfully impair the
transmission of Primary Users (PUs). Therefore, a crucial task for SUs is to
decide which available channel should be selected, the so-called spectrum
decision. To provide intelligent spectrum decision strategy to SUs, we suggest
a system called Spectrum Decision Support System (SDSS). SDSS takes into
account both heterogeneity aspects and interoperability requirements of CR
networks. By this, SDSS is capable of jointly considering various channel
characterizations and different decision making algorithms for doing spectrum
decision. The paper is reporting the SDSS architecture as well as the related

I denna rapport presenteras utfallet av en bibliometrisk studie av 5 sektioner
vid Blekinge tekniska högskola. Studien avser publikationer publicerade under
2011. Huvudsyftet med studien är att ge indikatorer på skolornas
publiceringsproduktion och -kvalitet samt spegla synligheten på den
internationella tidskriftsmarknaden
"Offentligt" grupprov - en studie av alternativ examination i juridik för samhällsplanerare
Artikeln behandlar en alternativ examinationsform i en obligatorisk kurs i
juridik på masterprogrammet i Fysisk Planering vid Blekinge Tekniska Högskola.
Ett avslutande "offentligt" grupprov har ersatt en tidigare salstenta i kursen.
Genom förändringen har examinationens genomförande också fått funktionen av en
inlärningssituation. Studenterna förbereder teman i grupper. Ett syfte med
detta är att underlätta den individuella inläsningen genom att strukturera
stoffet. Ett annat syfte är att ge studenterna tillfälle till gemensam
diskussion och reflektion även före det avslutande seminariet
Influences on virtual pedagogical designs
This is an analysis of the relationship between teachers’ digital design,
appreciation of curricular contents and self-assessed job satisfaction.
Traditionally contents and method influence student learning and consequently
teacher satisfaction. The more the students learn the happier the teacher.
People assume that student experiences of digitally “designed” teaching and
learning influence significantly teacher satisfaction. Digital design solutions
externalize the teachers’ intentions, primarily providing a social game for the
students. Questionnaire results suggest that teacher satisfaction is an outcome
of instruction and curriculum. But does either of the two have an added effect
on the other, e.g. does curriculum reinforce the digital design or is it the
other way around
Software architecture as a means of communication in a globally distributed software development context
The management and coordination of globally distributed development poses many
new challenges, including compensating for informal implicit communication,
which is aggravated by heterogeneous social and engineering traditions between
development sites. Although much research has gone into identifying challenges
and working with practical solutions, such as tools for communication, little
research has focused on comparing communication mechanisms in terms of their
ability to provide large volumes of rich information in a timely manner. Data
was collected through in-depth interviews with eleven practitioners and
twenty-eight responses through a web-based questionnaire from three product
lines at an international software development organization. This paper
assesses the relative importance of ten commonly used communication mechanisms
and practices across local and global development sites. The results clearly
indicate that some communication mechanisms are more important than others in
providing large volumes of rich information in a timely manner. The prevalence
of architecture in providing rich information in large volumes for both local
and global communication can be clearly observed
Using Bayes Network for Prediction of Type-2 Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease and a major public health challenge
worldwide. Using data mining methods to aid people to predict diabetes has
become a popular topic. In this paper, Bayes Network was proposed to predict
patients with developing Type-2 diabetes. The dataset used is the Pima Indians
Diabetes Data Set, which collects the information of patients with and without
developing Type-2 diabetes. Weka software was used throughout this study.
Accurate results have been obtained which proves using the proposed Bayes
network to predict Type-2 diabetes is effective
Value simulation in conceptual phases of PSS design
This paper discuss the change in early design imposed by a Product-Service
Systems (PSS) perspective onto the design and development phases of engineering
design and how this affects the today de-facto standard of virtual modelling of
product properties. The approach is exemplified via PSS situations related to
aerospace and automotive industry in order to clarify “parameters of change”
due to PSS reasoning, and challenges are displayed regarding early modelling
and simulation
HIV Patient Monitoring Framework Through Knowledge Engineering
Uganda has registered more than a million deaths since the HIV virus was first
offi¬cially reported in the country over 3 decades ago. The governments in
partnership with different groups have implemented different programmes to
address the epidemic. The support from different donors and reduction in prices
of treatment resulted in the focus on antiretroviral therapy access to those
affected. Presently only a quarter of the approximately 1 million infected by
HIV in Uganda are undergoing antiretroviral therapy. The number of patients
pause a challenge in monitoring of therapy given the overall resource needs for
health care in the country. Furthermore the numbers on antiretroviral therapy
are set to increase in addition to the stringent requirements in tracking and
monitoring of each individual patient during therapy.
This research aimed at developing a framework for adopting knowledge
engineering in information systems for monitoring HIV/AIDS patients. An open
source approach was adopted due to the resource constrained context of the
study to ensure a cost effec¬tive and sustainable solution. The research was
motivated by the inconclusive literature on open source dimensional models for
data warehouses and data mining for monitor¬ing antiretroviral therapy.
The first phase of the research involved a situational analysis of HIV in
health care and different health care information systems in the country. An
analysis of the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities of the health care
system to adopt knowledge bases was done. It proposed a dimensional model for
implementing a data warehouse focused on monitoring HIV patients. The second
phase involved the development of a knowledge base inform of an open source
data warehouse, its simulation and testing.
The study involved interdisciplinary collaboration between different
stakeholders in the research domain and adopted a participatory action research
methodology. This involved identification of the most appropriate technologies
to foster this collabora¬tion. Analysis was done of how stakeholders can take
ownership of basic HIV health information system architecture as their
expertise grow in managing the systems and make changes to reflect even better
results out of system functionality.
Data mining simulations was done on the data warehouse out of which two machine
learning algorithms (regression and classification) were developed and tested
using data from the data warehouse. The algorithms were used to predict patient
viral load from CD4 count test figures and to classify cases of treatment
failure with 83% accu¬racy. The research additionally presents an open source
dimensional model for moni¬toring antiretroviral therapy and the status of
information systems in health care. An architecture showing the integration of
different knowledge engineering components in the study including the data
warehouse, the data mining platform and user interac-tion is presented
Determination of Viable Connectivity Technology for E-Learning in Tanzania - Case Study of Rural Secondary Schools
In response to different development challenges, Tanzania is striving to
achieve her fourth attribute of the National Development Vision, i.e. to have a
well educated and learning society by the year 2025. The earmarked approach is
to integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education system
(e-learning), in order to improve teaching and learning processes, hence
provision of quality education. However, Tanzania is challenged by lack of ICT
infrastructures in rural areas, which affects integration of ICT in education.
This thesis presents a research work to determine a cost-effective and
performance efficient connectivity technology for rural secondary schools to
access e-learning resources. The research surveyed wireless technologies, in
order to identify potential broadband access technologies suitable for rural
areas of the developing countries. Because ICT is a very dynamic sector, the
identified technologies were compared by using conceptual framework to study
their sustainability and thereafter, analyzed by using techno-economic approach
to determine a feasible and cost effective option. Results show that, a third
generation (3G) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) operating at
900MHz is a feasible and cost - effective connectivity technology for rural
areas of Tanzania.
Furthermore, the research employed a simulation modelling approach to study
traffic differentiation and priority scheduling mechanisms in providing Quality
of Service (QoS) for e-learning applications in UMTS networks. A simulation
model of the UMTS network is developed and used to study performance of
e-learning applications as perceived by users. Simulation results showed that,
UMTS network configured with traffic differentiation and priority scheduling
can guarantee delivery of e-learning services with the required QoS. The Public
Private People's Partnership (PPPP) model is proposed by this research as an
implementation strategy for sustainable broadband rural connectivity solution
