Distribute the Video Frame Pixels over the Streaming Video Sequence as Sub-Frames
Real-time video streaming over wireless channel has become an important issue
due to the limited bandwidth that is unable to handle the flow of information
of the video frames. The characteristics of wireless networks in terms of the
available bandwidth, frame delay, and frame losses cannot be known in advance.
As the effect of that, the user may notice a frozen picture in the mobile
screen. In this work, we propose a technique to prevent freezing frames in the
mobile devices based on spatial and temporal locality for the video stream, by
splitting the video frame into four sub-frames and combining them with another
sub-frames from different sequence positions in the streaming video. In case of
frames losses, there is still a possibility that one fourth (one sub-frame) of
the frame will be received by the mobile device. The received sub-frames will
be reconstructed based on the surrounding pixels. The rate adaptation mechanism
will be also highlighted in this work, by skipping sub-frames from the video
frames. We show that the server can skip up to 75% of the frame’s pixels and
the receiving pixels (sub-frames) can be reconstructed to acceptable quality in
the mobile device
Global software engineering and agile practices: a systematic review
Agile practices have received attention from industry as an alternative to
plan-driven software development approaches. Agile encourages, for example,
small self-organized collocated teams, whereas global software engineering
(GSE) implies distribution across cultural, temporal, and geographical
boundaries. Hence, combining them is a challenge. A systematic review was
conducted to capture the status of combining agility with GSE. The results were
limited to peer-reviewed conference papers or journal articles, published
between 1999 and 2009. The synthesis was made through classifying the papers
into different categories (e.g. publication year, contribution type, research
method). At the end, 81 papers were judged as primary for further analysis. The
distribution of papers over the years indicated that GSE and Agile in
combination has received more attention in the last 5 years. However, the
majority of the existing research is industrial experience reports in which
Agile practices were modified with respect to the context and situational
requirements. The emergent need in this research area is suggested to be
developing a framework that considers various factors from different
perspectives when incorporating Agile in GSE. Practitioners may use it as a
decision-making basis in early phases of software development
Techno-Economic Analysis of UMTS900 and UMTS2100 for Rural Connectivity in Tanzania
Most rural areas of the developing countries lack Information and Communication
(ICT) infrastructures such as access network (last mile connectivity) to
deliver ICT services. The lack of connectivity is due to high cost associated
with implementing ICT infrastructures. Wireless technologies are envisioned as
candidates for rural connectivity. They are not only easier and faster to
deploy but also cheaper than the wired technologies. This paper presents a
techno-economic analysis of two wireless mobile technologies in Tanzania called
third generation (3G) implemented at 900MHz and at 2100MHz frequency bands.
Objectives of techno-economic analysis are to investigate economic feasibility
and to determine a cost effective option between the two connectivity options.
Results show that 3G at 900HMz is a feasible and cost effective connectivity
technology in Tanzania. These results can be generalized to other developing
countries, since their rural areas pose similar characteristics with regard to
ICT infrastructure development
Classifications of Software Transfers
Many companies have development sites around the globe. This inevitably means
that development work may be transferred between the sites. This paper defines
a classification of software transfer types; it divides transfers into three
main types: full, partial and gradual transfers to describe the context of a
transfer. The differences between transfer types, and hence the need for a
classification, are illustrated with staffing curves for two different transfer
types. The staffing curves are obtained through a combination of interviews
with both high-level management and a group of experts, and an industrial case
study. From the empirical work, it is concluded that the distribution of
personnel differs for different types of transfer, which means that it is
crucial to be clear about different classes of software transfers. If not, it
is easy to underestimate the effort needed to transfer software work as well as
additional costs related to the transfer as such
Tracing Requirements interdependencies in Agile Teams
The pressure of delivering a software product in timely manner and rapid
requirement changes have driven many software organizations to adopt a solution
that allows them
to be more flexible in adapting to changes. Agile Methodology (AM) is a
software development approach that tries to address the rigidity of traditional
plan-driven methods.
AM focuses on delivering working software on time through short and iterative
development cycles. Changes to requirements are also accepted even at later
stages of the
development.
In AM, requirements are implemented in releases based on prioritization of
financial value, cost, uncertainty, and risks. However, practitioners find
results from prioritization
to be untrustworthy. Requirements prioritization is further challenged by
interdependencies between requirements. Managing requirements
interdependencies, which is an important aspect in incremental development, is
a missing piece in AM.
The aim of this study is to explore the perception from agile teams regarding
requirements interdependencies and uncover in-situ practices for handling those
interdependencies.
We want to study the practices that are in place from the development team
point of view with ethnomethodological approaches, utilizing observations and
interviews as data collection methods. Through ethnomethodology we can uncover
social and other aspects that can provide insights toward focused development
effort improvement, as demonstrated in
Revisiting the Research Field of Product-Service Systems Development
The research within the Product-Service Systems (PSS) field aims to support
manufacturing industries’ ability to provide value in terms of a service offer
to its customers, simultaneously taking a more holistic approach to eco-
sustainability. The industrial idea of providing customer benefits in parallel
with robust products is not new, yet equipping engineers to conduct innovation
and applying a service perspective in the early design stages is noticed as
fairly radical. The purpose in this paper is two-fold. First, to describe
research efforts within the PSS field seen through our engineering design
lenses, second, to explore and discuss plausible directions and by that
identify “white spots” on the map, which may be seen as relevant directions for
future research
Influence Map-based Controllers for Ms. PacMan and the Ghosts
Ms. Pac-Man, one of the classic arcade games has
recently gained attention in the field of game AI through the
yearly competitions of various kinds held at e.g. CIG. We have
implemented an Influence Map-based controller for Ms. Pac-Man
as well as for the ghosts within the game. We show that it is able to handle a
number of various situations through the interesting behaviors emerging through
the interplay of the different maps. It is also significantly better than the
previous implementations based on similar techniques, such as potential fields
On Data Representation in Cognitive Radio Networks
Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) and routing in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs)
present challenging operational and technological problems in beyond 4G
networks. Additionally, the provision of Quality of Experience (QoE) for
different applications and Cognitive Radio Devices (CRDs) requires new
management
architectures and knowledge information approaches. The paper advances a new
data-representation solution to allow efficient multi-constraint routing and
multi dimensional adaptation for multiple cognitive radio (CR) dimensions like
space, frequency, power and time. The goal of the paper is to advance a system
for CRN data representation, which allows optimized communication
according to QoE demands between Secondary Users (SUs)
Evaluation of a Curriculum for Technical Artists
A Technical Artist requires a unique set of skills to act as a bridge between
artists and programmers in digital
entertainment development. Our newly developed Technical Artist in Games (TAG)
program is regulated under
the national Higher Education Regulation (HER) in Sweden. This paper analyses
the fit between the program and requirements from both the HER and the computer
games industry. The analysis is done by evaluating the course content of the
TAG program in relation to the HER and thirty job advertisements. The aim of
this evaluation is to investigate how well the program prepares students for
their future roles in industry
Visual Quality Improvement of Digital Video by Stabilization Using Adaptive CMAC Filtering
A digital Video Stabilization (DVS) system removes
the unwanted shaking in the videos acquired by hand-held
cameras and preserves the panning. In this paper, a digital
video stabilization system is proposed based upon adaptive
cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) filtering. A
CMAC is a manifestation of the associative memory learning
structure present in the cerebellum of human being. Adaptive
CMAC filtering has favorable properties of small size, good
generalization, rapid learning and dynamic response. Thus, it
is more suitable for high-speed signal processing applications.
The adaptive CMAC is used to adjust the coefficients of IIR
filter employed in the proposed model. The training of CMAC
is based upon fuzzy rule. The efficacy of the proposed adaptive
CMAC filtering has been validated by evaluating it on a set of
test video sequences
