On Power Consumption of Wireless Sensor Nodes with Min(N,T) Policy in Spectrum Sharing Systems
In this paper, we analyze the power consumption of wireless sensor nodes with
min(N, T) policy and M/G/1 queue in the presence of Nakagami-m fading. In
particular, this system setting is applied to a wireless sensor node operating
in a cognitive radio system as secondary user in the presence of a primary
user. As such, not only the queue policy influences the power consumption but
also the interference power constraint imposed on the wireless sensor node by
the primary user. Thus, a queued sleep/wake-up strategy is analyzed in order to
mitigate the average power consumption of a sensor node using min(N, T) policy
in the context of an M/G/1 queue and a spectrum sharing environment in the
presence of signal fading. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the
impact of queuing parameters and fading channel on the power consumption of a
wireless sensor node
Determinants and Effects of Innovation: Context Matters
Innovation and technological change is the major factor of production, renewal,
and competitiveness of firms and nations in the contemporary “knowledge
economy”. The overall purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the
innovative behavior of firms in various sectors and regions. In particular, I
have analyzed the determinants (driving forces) of firms’ innovation on the one
hand (in paper 1 and 2), and the effect of firms’ innovation on the other hand
(in paper 3 and 4). In addition, a central concern in this dissertation is that
context, in which firms operate and innovate, matters for innovation. I take
into account several contexts in the analyses of both the determinants and
effects of innovation. These contexts are: the regions in which firms are
located, the dynamics of industries, and the dynamics of cluster in which firms
belong to.
This dissertation consists of four separate papers plus an introductory
chapter. Each paper can be read independently, but all of them deal with either
determinants or effects of the innovation of firms.
The first paper analyzes the effect of various firm-specific determinants on
firms’ innovation output. It also considers the stages of the Industry Life
Cycle (ILC) as a context in which firms operate and innovate. Using the
Community Innovation Survey data for manufacturing and service sectors in
Sweden during 2002-2004, I find that the importance of various determinants of
firms’ innovation depends on the stages of the ILC in which they operate.
The second paper is again investigates the determinants of innovation, but this
time incorporates another context that affect the innovation, i.e. the regions
that firms belong to. Using the patent applications data as a measure of
innovation in all functional regions in Sweden during 2002-2007, we find that
both the internal knowledge generated within the region and the inflow of
external knowledge matter for innovation of firms located in the regions.
Moreover, the extent of related variety of knowledge in the region has the
superior role to promote innovation.
The third paper examines the effect of a firm’s innovation output on firm’s
performance. Export behavior of firms is chosen as a performance indicator.
Particular attention is devoted to distinguishing between innovation input and
innovation output and to isolate their effects on export behavior of firms.
Using two waves of Swedish Community Innovation Survey data during 2002-2006
merged with registered firm-level data, I find that what really matters for
enhancing the export behavior of firms is the innovation output of firms,
rather than the innovation input (mere efforts in investing in innovation
activities).
The fourth paper also analyzes the effect of innovation on performance measures
but this time incorporates another context, i.e. the life cycle of the regional
cluster that firms belong to. This paper delves into a particular cluster, i.e.
Linköping ICT cluster. Using data collected through interviews during 2009 and
2012 on key cluster actors, we find that innovation is among the factors that
are always highly important at any given stage of the cluster’s evolution,
however, it has slightly greater importance during the “growing” stage
What do we know about software development in startups?
An impressive number of new startups are launched every day as a result of
growing new markets, accessible technologies, and venture capital. New ventures
such as Facebook, Supercell, Linkedin, Spotify, WhatsApp, and Dropbox, to name
a few, are good examples of startups that evolved into successful businesses.
However, despite many successful stories, the great majority of them fail
prematurely. Operating in a chaotic and rapidly evolving domain conveys new
uncharted challenges for startuppers. In this study, the authors characterize
their context and identify common software development startup practices
On Bistatic Forward-looking SAR Imaging
Left/right ambiguity and low angular (azimuth) resolution are severe problems
for monostatic forward-looking SAR imaging. It is strongly believed that these
technical issues can definitely be solved with bistatic forward-looking SAR.
The analysis presented in this paper points out that the left/right ambiguity
problem still exits. However, an appropriate selection of the position of
bistatic base line and antenna beamwidth allows us to conceal it. The paper
also gives some recommendations which can be considred for the forward-looking
SAR imaging
Catching the download train: Energy-efficient file downloading on smartphones
The most energy-consuming applications in battery life-constrained smartphones
are the ones that comprise data transmission, especially via the 3G interface.
Scheduling download activities on smartphones is especially necessary, if there
are multiple asynchronous downloads scattered over a long duration. The latter
scenario highly increases the energy consumption of smartphones. In this paper,
we investigate energy consumption with the focus on file downloading while
scheduling multiple file downloads in two scenarios: serialized and parallel.
We repeat the experiments on a single smartphone via its 3G and also via WiFi
tethering via another smartphone. We assess the performance of the two
scenarios via measurement of power consumption and corresponding download
duration in a realistic environment
Contemporary Approaches to Activity Theory
The title of the book covers a variety of activities, environments, settings
and contexts. The title also suggests a common theoretical-conceptual approach
to contemporary cultural-historical activity theory. The topic fits the needs
and abilities of modern man because of the impact of activity systems,
globalization and cultural integration. More specifically the contents of the
book unfold contemporary resources of collective endeavors. One reason for
choosing a shared individual and collective theme is to learn about the impact
of computer supported instrumentalism. The new technology poses a threat to
traditionally acknowledged resources like co-ordination, cooperation and
co-construction between people. So, there are cultural-historical experiences
to share between people who use their ability to communicate as an impetus to
systemic innovation of shared activities operating for the good of communities,
societies and nations. From one point of view families, teams, orchestras,
courts of law, hospitals etc. are self regulating human organizations. From
another point of view – which the contents of this book suggest - many
approaches to learning enable for “change agents” to support, co-ordinate,
study, understand, re-design, manipulate and improve practices
Advertising Stories of Second Homes in the Swedish Welfare State
The aim of this article is to discuss the greatest expansion of vacation
housing in Sweden for the period of 1960-1980. In focus are product
advertisements related to new vacation houses for sale by producers of
prefabricated wooden vacation houses. The empirical exploration is based on a
content analysis of all issues of a widespread Swedish lifestyle magazine,
published monthly between 1960 and 1980. A limited selection of advertisements
is further analyzed from a perspective of discourse analysis. The selected
advertisements are telling stories, a basic approach in advertising. As a
result of the analysis a number of recurring stories can be constructed; the
story of freedom of choice and of modern life, the story of multiple dwelling
and of the good life, and of family unity. The stories could be stated to be
closely connected to crucial values of the “people’s home”, the core principle
of the Swedish welfare state
I februari 2010 fanns i
länet 448 pågående ärenden som påbörjats sedan mer än ett år tillbaka. Således
finns i Blekinge en relativt stor grupp människor som är eller riskerar att
hamna i långvarigt utanförskap. Många i denna grupp har dessutom synliga eller
dolda funktionsnedsättningar
Comparing a Hybrid Testing Process with Scripted and Exploratory Testing: An Experimental Study with Practitioners
This study presents an experimental study comparing the testing quality of a
Hybrid Testing (HT) process with the commonly used approaches in industry:
Scripted Testing (ST) and Exploratory Testing (ET). The study was conducted in
an international IT service company in Sweden with the involvement of six
experienced testers. Two measures were used for comparison: 1) defect detection
effectiveness (DDE) and 2) functionality coverage (FC). The results indicated
that HT performed better in terms of DDE than ST and worse than ET. In terms of
FC, HT performed better than ET, while no significant differences were observed
between the HT and ST. Furthermore, HT performed best for experienced testers,
but worse with less experienced testers
