The Baby room:A Person-Centred Approach to Communities of Practice and Belonging in Formal Daycare

    No full text
How can the lived experience of practitioners illuminate the complexities of emotional and ethical care in managing a day care nursery?Much of the policy and practice surrounding early years work in nursery day care emphasises the school readiness of young children, with less focus on the complexity of emotional and ethical demands. Through case studies and her personal lived experience as an education practitioner, caring for infants from 6 weeks to 2 years, author Amanda Norman details the emotional labour, celebrations, and challenges of working with our youngest community members. The Baby Room explores the implementation of a Person-Centred Care (PCC) approach, and discusses how this can be used to create a sense of belonging and community, ultimately shaping the social identity of professionals. Addressing topics such as principles of a therapeutic relationship, the role of supervision, and teamwork, this book is ideal reading for students of Education and Early Childhood Studies, Psychology, Sociology, and practitioners of Infant Education

Russia’s leadership in Eurasia:holding together or falling apart?

    No full text
The Russo-Ukraine War raises important questions on the dynamics of regional leadership and followership in what may be termed ‘Russian-led Eurasia’. These questions, in particular the strength of Russian leadership in the region are complicated by the ambiguity in existing literature and competing images of Russia’s relations with long-standing allies – notably Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan – which are often portrayed in terms of a ‘community of fate’ or partners destined for closer integration but also as a ‘community of fortune’ or ad hoc, situational partners, loosely centred on Russia. This article offers an innovative theoretical and methodological exploration of Russia’s relations with regional partner states by utilizing the English School of International Relations and regional integration organisations to assess Russia’s regional leadership. As argued in this article, Russian-led Eurasia may be understood as an example of a regional interstate society with Russian hegemony serving as a socially conferred, binding institution. But this hegemony is inherently unstable owing to Russia’s inability to balance hegemonic ‘rights’ with ‘responsibilities’. War in Ukraine did not create this problem, but it has created the conditions for leadership transition in the region

Generative AI and the Ethical Risks Associated with Human-Computer Symbiosis

    No full text
This article critically examines digital technology through the lens of existential philosophy concerned with human-technology interaction. One such philosophy is human-technology symbiosis (or man-computer symbiosis, in J.C.R. Licklider’s terminology). A similar view appears in Douglas Engelbart’s work on the augmentation of human intelligence. These ideas form the framework for this paper’s analysis. The early computing scientists considered technical progress with deep care for the future of human creativity and human intelligence. They set a course for a new future of human-computer interaction that would take the form of a partnership or a team. Their values continue to play powerfully into digital culture today. The ethical concerns for cybernetics voiced by Norbert Wiener further enrich the critical positioning in this paper. Using this theoretical framework, the analysis will show that generative artificial intelligence is philosophically congruent with the idea of symbiotic human-technology interaction. Microsoft’s Copilot will serve as a concrete illustration. However, certain aspects of human interactions with generative artificial intelligence may pose ethical concerns, particularly related to personal and social responsibility, the nature of knowledge, and the value placed on the human element. This renews the importance of rigorous governance systems and education

Nomophobia (No-mobile-phone Phobia) Among the Undergraduate Medical Students

Nomophobia (no-mobile-phone phobia) is the fear and anxiety of being without a mobile phone. This study pioneers the investigation of nomophobia in Afghanistan using the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q), addressing a crucial gap in the field. We collected statistical data from 754 undergraduate medical students, comprising men (56.50%) and women (43.50%), and analyzed the dimensions of nomophobia. While results revealed that all but two participants were nomophobic, they identified three significant dimensions affecting the level of nomophobia among participants: (a) gender, (b) age, and (c) marital status. The study's contributions are precious, given the peculiarity of Afghan political turmoil, security, and human rights issues, especially for women. For example, the study's data collection was abruptly halted in December 2022 due to the Taliban regime's decision to make it illegal for women to enroll in universities as students. Therefore, while examining the characteristics of nomophobia across societies is imperative, it is also vital to investigate what is true of one society, Afghanistan, at one point in time and space. The study concludes by emphasizing the need to broaden participants' scope in future studies to better understand the prevalence of nomophobia across broader societal contexts and forces
