    Women Professors and Deans

    This chapter argues that the key tension in the historiography of women’s progress as academics lies in its position within women’s and feminist history and the history of education. The themes of institutions, networking, money, and religion provide four hubs from which to reflect on existing work and recognize potential new directions for those seeking to improve either our understanding of the past or the problems of the present. A fifth section discusses the possibility of “border crossings” as an additional lens through which to view the field. The scope of the chapter is restricted to material published in English, and existing lacunae in terms of race, disability, and sexuality are recognized but inevitably repeated. Most examples are taken from the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and Britain, and it is hoped that the themes identified may generate research with a wider geographical scope. Researching women as academics is more complex than simply charting their access and presence; it is also about recognizing their impact on university life and curricula. Two case studies highlight themes of history for the past or present. The first focuses on the role of the British and International Federation of University Women, identifying how women worked together to expand career opportunities. The second considers how campaigns for academic equality today draw on historical explanations for the origins of the problem

    A Survey on an Emerging Area: Deep Learning for Smart City Data

    Rapid urbanisation has brought about great challenges to our daily lives, such as traffic congestion, environmental pollution, energy consumption, public safety and so on. Research on smart cities aims to address these issues with various technologies developed for the Internet of Things. Very recently, the research focus has shifted towards processing of massive amount of data continuously generated within a city environment, e.g., physical and participatory sensing data on traffic flow, air quality, and healthcare. Techniques from computational intelligence have been applied to process and analyse such data, and to extract useful knowledge that helps citizens better understand their surroundings and informs city authorities to provide better and more efficient public services. Deep learning, as a relatively new paradigm in computational intelligence, has attracted substantial attention of the research community and demonstrated greater potential over traditional techniques. This paper provides a survey of the latest research on the convergence of deep learning and smart city from two perspectives: while the technique-oriented review pays attention to the popular and extended deep learning models, the application-oriented review emphasises the representative application domains in smart cities. Our study showed that there are still many challenges ahead for this emerging area owing to the complex nature of deep learning and wide coverage of smart city applications. We pointed out a number of future directions related to deep learning efficiency, emergent deep learning paradigms, knowledge fusion and privacy preservation, and hope these would move the relevant research one step further in creating truly distributed intelligence for smart cities

    SmartTags: IoT Product Passport for Circular Economy Based on Printed Sensors and Unique Item-Level Identifiers

    In this paper, we present a method that facilitates Internet of Things (IoT) for building a product passport and data exchange enabling the next stage of the circular economy. SmartTags based on printed sensors (i.e., using functional ink) and a modified GS1 barcode standard enable unique identification of objects on a per item-level (including Fast-Moving Consumer Goods—FMCG), collecting, sensing, and reading of parameters from environment as well as tracking a products’ lifecycle. The developed ontology is the first effort to define a semantic model for dynamic sensors, including datamatrix and QR codes. The evaluation of decoding and readability of identifiers (QR codes) showed good performance for detection of sensor state printed over and outside the QR code data matrix, i.e., the recognition ability with image vision algorithm was possible. The evaluation of the decoding performance of the QR code data matrix printed with sensors was also efficient, i.e., the QR code ability to be decoded with the reader after reversible and irreversible process of ink (dis)appearing was preserved, with slight drop in performance if ink density is low

    Narratives of Vulnerability: Disrupted Consumption Lives of Ex-offenders

    Adopting a narrative inquiry approach, we examine the consumer lives of ex-offenders to identify the disruptive and unequal contexts of vulnerability participants encounter in the marketplace post release. Identifying new forms of consumer restriction experienced by ex-offenders, we interrogate the notion of disruption, as a new theoretical metaphor within the insecure context of consumer vulnerability and analyse the interplay between participants’ life circumstances and the marketplace to identify experienced inequalities and micro-aggressions. Through active community engagement with local and national charities working on ex-offender rehabilitation, this study offers a new theorisation of how disruption in vulnerable marketplace contexts is operationalised and experienced. It makes a further contribution to the nascent literature on prisoner/ex-prisoner experiences of severe consumer constraint, consumption inadequacy and impoverishment

    Modelling green entrepreneurial intention among university students using the entrepreneurial event and cultural values theory

    Going green has created significant enthusiasm across the society. However, green entrepreneurial intention is still at evolving stage. The main objective of this study is to reveal the association of entrepreneurial event theory and cultural values theory with the green entrepreneurial intention. Cross sectional survey was conducted through structured questionnaire among the university students. Partial least squares method has been adopted using the SmartPLS 3.0 software for analysing the data from 835 respondents. The findings of the results revealed that perceived desirability, perceived feasibility, opportunity seeking, and reasonability taking plays significant role for green entrepreneurial intention. The result of the study will provide the governments to explore opportunities for the green entrepreneurial ventures among universities. Universities may offer customised academic courses, or training program to trigger the green business initiative among the students. Students will be benefited to learn the essentials of green entrepreneurial intention from this research.</p

    An international survey of the nutrition management of chylothorax: a time for change

    Introduction: Although chylothorax is an uncommon complication following paediatric cardiothoracic surgery, it has significant associated morbidities and increased in-hospital mortality, as well as results in higher costs. A lack of prospective evidence or consensus guidelines for management of chylothorax further hinders optimal management. The aim of this survey was to characterise variations in practice in the management of chylothorax and to identify areas for future research. Materials and methods: A descriptive, observational survey investigating conservative management practices of chylothorax was distributed internationally to health-care professionals in paediatric intensive care and cardiology units. The survey investigated five domains: the first providing general information about health-care professionals and four domains focusing on clinical practice including diet composition and duration. Results: In total, sixty-four health-care professionals completed the survey, representing 38 organisations from 16 countries. The respondents were dietitians (80%), physicians (19%), and nurses (1%). In Australia and New Zealand, management was most commonly directed by physicians' preference (67%) as compared to unit protocols in Europe (67%), United States of America (67%), and Other regions (55%). Dietitians in Australia/New Zealand, United Kingdom, and Ireland followed the most restrictive diet therapy recommending &lt;5 g long chain triglyceride fat per day (p &lt; 0.00001). The duration of diet therapy significantly varied between regions: Australia/New Zealand: 4 weeks (36%) and 6 weeks (43%); Europe: 4 weeks (25%) and 6 weeks (57%); and North America: 4 weeks (18%) and 6 weeks (75%) (p &lt; 0.00001). Conclusions: This survey highlights international variations in practice in the management of chylothorax, particularly with respect to treatment duration and dietary fat restriction. Future research should include a multi-centre randomised controlled trial to inform evidence-based practice and reduce morbidity, particularly poor growth
