    No full text
This article offers a new interpretation of the neglected epic poem Alexander's Expedition (1792) by the Bristol scientist and 'Jacobin' Thomas Beddoes. The poem's classical / heroic theme is used as a vehicle for anti-colonial polemic. Beddoes?s influence on the science of the period, as the mentor of Humphry Davy and experimenter with nitrous oxide and other gases, has been extensively re-evaluated; to an extent, he is also known for his impact on the radical politics of the 1790s. This article aims to demonstrate Beddoes's importance as a literary writer, in terms of both poetic genre and political belief. It also includes a discussion of the nature and status of heroic poetry in the early Romantic period

Implementing Sensory Design for care-home residents in London

    No full text
Within dementia care, there is a need to facilitate appropriate sensory experiences and opportunities for meaningful engagement for people living with dementia, particularly in later stages. As such, the provision of multisensory environments designed to meet the needs of these individuals and offering suitable occupation and stimulation, have increasingly gained significance. In this context, this paper explores the meaning of experience-focused, sensory design and the importance of appropriate sensory stimulation for wellbeing. It refers to recent interdisciplinary research in this area and a new guide advising on design of sensory enhanced spaces in residential dementia care. The primary focus of the paper is a case study showcasing the implementation of sensory design, based on these guidelines. The case study reports on the co-creation of a sensory, experience-focused space for residents with dementia in a London care-home. Based on this example, the paper highlights the value and impact of appropriate sensory design on the wellbeing of people with dementia and their carers. The conclusion discusses the learning and knowledge gained from this process as well as perspectives on further research activities including the analysis of user feedback and evaluation of the design intervention

This article explores the collection and exhibition practices surrounding the Exposition du Sahara (1934), an exhibit organized at a key moment in the transformation of the Musée d’Ethnographie du Trocadéro into France’s modernized anthropological museum, the Musée de l’Homme. Through an analysis of archival material and exhibit publications, the article traces how the institutionalization of ethnographic collecting practices was shaped by interactions between museum personnel and collectors on the ground, and by the organizers’ desire to make the Exposition du Sahara, and the Musée d’Ethnographie itself, simultaneously scientific, popular, and a successful colonial institution. The account also tells the story of some of the objects from North Africa now housed at the Musée du Quai Branly, where very different modes of interpretation have been applied
