The Anatomy of Allied Occupation:Contesting the Resumption of Japanese Antarctic Whaling, 1945-52
This article scrutinizes the controversy surrounding the resumption of Japanese Antarctic whaling from 1946, focusing on the negotiations and concessions that underline the nature of the Allied Occupation as an international undertaking. Britain, Norway, Australia and New Zealand objected to Japanese pelagic whaling, chiefly on the grounds of its past record of wasteful and inefficient operations. As a result of their opposition, the Natural Resources Section of GHQ SCAP was forced to increase the number of Allied inspectors on board the two Japanese whaling factories from one to two, and to respond carefully to the criticisms they made of the conduct of Japanese whaling. United States sensitivity to international censure caused the Occupation to encourage the factory vessels to prioritize oil yields over meat and blubber for domestic consumption. Moreover, MacArthur summarily rejected a proposal to increase the number of Japanese fleets from two to three in 1947. With its preponderance of power the United States successfully promoted Japanese Antarctic whaling, but a tendency to focus only on outcomes obscures the lengthy and difficult processes that enabled Japanese whaling expeditions to take place on an annual basis from late 1946
Temporalities and the Transnational: Yoshi Kasuya’s Consideration of Secondary Education for Girls in Japan (1933)
This chapter explores temporalities in the historical and comparative approaches underpinning the 1933 comparative account of girls’ education in England, Germany, France, America, and Japan that Yoshi Kasuya, a teacher from Tsuda College, Japan, produced for her doctorate at Teachers College Columbia, where she was supervised by Isaac Kandel, professor of comparative education, and Willystine Goodsell, assistant professor of history and philosophy, whose specialism was the education of women. Yoshi’s study configured a complex cultural model of modern Japanese womanhood, and an associated educational programme, that entangled Japanese elements with facets of Western womanhood that she encountered during her periods of research in Germany, England and the US. To explore the temporalities that thread through Yoshi’s study, the first part of the chapter examines times of diachronic comparison and temporalities of adaptation; the second section focuses on times of the nation and temporalities of awakening; and the third looks at times of vernacular cosmopolitanism and temporalities of becoming. Pleistocene volcanism and the geomorphological record of the Hrazdan Valley, central Armenia: linking landscape dynamics and the Palaeolithic record
The Southern Caucasus lies at the intersection of Africa, the Levant and Eurasia, and is thus a region of considerable interest in the study of Pleistocene hominin population dynamics and behaviour. While Palaeolithic archaeological sites in the region such as Dmanisi and Nor Geghi 1 attest to such palaeogeographic significance, a greater understanding of the chronology and nature of climatic and geomorphic changes in the region is needed to fully understand hominin settlement dynamics. The Hrazdan river valley, central Armenia, has the potential to offer such insights given its rich Palaeolithic record and complex history of Pleistocene infill as a result of alluvial, lacustrine, aeolian, and volcanic processes. We therefore present a stratigraphic framework for basin infill and hominin activity during the Pleistocene, based on extensive geomorphological and geological mapping, published chronometric results (40Ar/39Ar and K-Ar), and archaeological survey. We demonstrate that the onset of Pleistocene volcanism in the Gegham Range to the immediate east of the Hrazdan valley occurred around 700 ka BP, after which there were several phases of effusive eruption lasting until 200 ka. Interbedded with lava emplaced by these eruptions are alluvial and lacustrine sequences, some with evidence of pedogenesis and several of which have yielded Palaeolithic artefacts. Taken together these sequences suggest a cyclical model of infill whereby lava flow along the valley resulted in the blockage of the palaeo-Hrazdan river and lake formation in the lea of the lava dams. Breaching of these dams resulted in a shift to predominately fluvial deposition, and the consequent development of floodplain soils. Hominin populations exploited the floodplains at times when the last of these phases coincided with interglacial and interstadial climates, but they also occupied the surrounding valley sides during the same warm, humid phases

Monitoring biomolecule concentrations in tissue using a wearable droplet microfluidic-based sensor
Knowing how biomarker levels vary within biological fluids over time can produce valuable insight into tissue physiology and pathology, and could inform personalised clinical treatment. We describe here a wearable sensor for monitoring biomolecule levels that combines continuous fluid sampling with in situ analysis using wet-chemical assays (with the specific assay interchangeable depending on the target biomolecule). The microfluidic device employs a droplet flow regime to maximise the temporal response of the device, using a screw-driven push-pull peristaltic micropump to robustly produce nanolitre-sized droplets. The fully integrated sensor is contained within a small (palm-sized) footprint, is fully autonomous, and features high measurement frequency (a measurement every few seconds) meaning deviations from steady-state levels are quickly detected. We demonstrate how the sensor can track perturbed glucose and lactate levels in dermal tissue with results in close agreement with standard off-line analysis and consistent with changes in peripheral blood levels
