The Hedonic Character of Nostalgia: An Integrative Data Analysis

    Get PDF
We conducted an integrative data analysis to examine the hedonic character of nostalgia. We combined positive and negative affect measures from 41 experiments manipulating nostalgia (N = 4,659). Overall, nostalgia inductions increased positive and ambivalent affect, but did not significantly alter negative affect. The magnitude of nostalgia’s effects varied markedly across different experimental inductions of the emotion. The hedonic character of nostalgia, then, depends on how the emotion is elicited and the benchmark (i.e., control condition) to which it is compared. We discuss implications for theory and research on nostalgia and emotions in general

Religious internationalism and Educational Activism: Women at the Geneva Bahá’í International Bureau and Beyond

This article explores the entanglement of Bahá’í belief, internationalism and educational activism in the pursuit of peace. It focuses on the activities of a number of women who were associated with the Geneva Bahá’í’ Bureau from its establishment in 1925 to its closure in 1957. It situates Bahá’í belief within religious internationalisms and outlines the Bahá’í approach to the creation of universal peace and a world society. It highlights the importance Bahá’ís attributed to education if individuals and society were to be transformed in the pursuit of peace. It discusses the Bahá’í view that the League of Nations was a progressive but insufficient mechanism to bring about world peace. It uses pen portraits of women associated with the Bahá’í International Bureau at Geneva to relate the mobility associated with their internationalism and educational activism to Bahá’í beliefs about the earth as one land. It ends by arguing that a comparative and transnational focus on relations between religious internationalisms and education would prove a fruitful approach for future historical studies of educational internationalis

Place-Based Knowledge Systems: Human and Machine

To tackle the problem of representing places we need to consider what people know and ask about them. This paper first suggests a list of potential queries of a ‘platial’ GIS, and it points out that half of them are not directly spatial but semantic, vaguely specified, and rooted in people’s sensory–motor (SM) experiences of places. Recent research into human semantic cognition has indicated both explicit and separate storage of SM aspects of each stored concept or category, alongside other key features of how semantic memory appears to work. A very recent computational model taken from the semantic memory research area is briefly reviewed, which holds some potential to be applied to places. If found to effectively reflect human place cognition, this could eventually link a more humanly plausible semantic representation (probably informed by large-scale text sources) to spatial data in a GIS. Further necessary research is proposed

Britain’s nuclear past:the fallout from the High Explosive Research programme

British nuclear tests conducted in the 1950s exposed many thousands of servicemen to high levels of radiation. Gordon Murray explores the poisonous legacy of the euphemistically named High Explosive Research programme

Hugh, Lothar and Berengar:the balance of power in Italy 945–50

    Get PDF
The return of Berengar of Ivrea to Italy in 945 was a point of great change for the political networks of the kingdom of Italy. Berengar is typically presented assuming control, first ruling in practice with the Bosonids Hugh and Lothar as puppets, then openly taking the crown following Lothar’s death in 950. Berengar, we are told, installed those who supported his insurrection in key positions, and marginalised or suborned those who had supported the Bosonids. This account is based almost exclusively on the narrative of the Antapodosis of Liutprand of Cremona. Liutprand’s work had complex personal and political motivations which led him to construct carefully an image of Hugh, Lothar, Berengar and of Italy as a whole. Moreover, Liutprand’s narrative conflicts with contemporary accounts of the period, as well as the charter record. This article demonstrates these inconsistencies and describes more nuanced changes in political structures in 945–50

“It’s like it doesn’t really matter”: Are teachers accountable and equipped for teaching primary physical education?

    Get PDF
In light of the recent trend of outsourcing PE teaching, the aim of this study was to examine primary teachers’ perspectives of primary PE delivery. 14 in-service primary school teachers took part in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis led to the development of six themes. Findings were presented as a written playscript, representing dialogue between a group primary school teachers, with reflections of four PE subject leads included to supplement the dialogue. The findings suggest a greater emphasis on accountability, subject advocacy, teacher professional development and effective deployment of resources are needed to address the issues raised by the primary teachers
