Translating the poet:Alexander Pope's engagement with the Homeric biographical tradition in his translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey
Get PDFThis article explores Alexander Pope’s experience as a translator of the Iliad and the Odyssey, particularly his engagement with Homer as a poet and his biographical tradition. This study focusses on how Homer features in Pope’s correspondence as he works on the translations, how the Greek poet is described in the prefatory essay by Thomas Parnell and Pope’s own notes to the text, and finally how his physical presence materialises in the illustrations within Pope’s translations. This article suggests that by engaging with the biography of Homer Pope explores issues such as poetic authority and divine inspiration, promote his own translations against European competitors, and ultimately establish himself as a translator and as a poet. Throughout the process, Homer appears as a presence that forces Pope constantly to challenge himself, until he feels he can stand a comparison with the greatest poet ever
The Significance of Herzberg and Taylor for the Gig Economy of China: Evaluating Gigger Incentives for Meituan and Ele.me
No full textThis article investigates the motivation of contingent workers in the gig economy of China, particularly focusing on the two Mobile Food Delivery Aggregators (MFDA) - Meituan and Ele.me that controls over 80% of the food delivery market in China. The convenience of one ‘super-app' on phone, offered by each of these companies, allows users to order a diversified range of products and services starting from food, clothing to travel booking and ride-hailing. Online food ordering, however, tops the chart of online orders and this creates millions of food delivery rider jobs/gigs in mainland China. This paper draws key insights from the employee motivation theories by Herzberg and Taylor which underpins the findings and thematic discussion of this qualitative paper. While it is important to recognise that the usage growth of these MFDAs and consequently new gig creation is exponentially growing, the implications of this research would inform these online platform-based companies how to better design motivational factors or incentives to boost their employee satisfaction, engagement and levels of commitments in the colossal Gig economy of mainland China.<br/

Researching on the Edge: Empancipatory Praxis for Social Justice
Get PDFPurpose - To provoke a conversation in marketing scholarship about the overlooked political nature of doing research, particularly for those who research issues of social (in)justice. We suggest a paradigmatic shift in how researchers might view and operationalise social justice work in marketing. Our emancipatory praxis framework offers scholars an alternative way to think about the methodology, design and politics of researching issues of social relevance.Design/methodology/approach - This is a conceptual paper drawing on critical theory to argue for a new methodological shift towards emancipatory praxis.Findings – As social justice research involves a dialectical relationship between crises and critique, the concept of emancipation acts as a methodological catalyst for furthering debate about social (in)justice in marketing. We identify a set of methodological troubles and challenges that may disrupt the boundaries of our knowledge making. We outline a set of methodological responses to these issues, illustrating how emancipatory research facilitates social action.Practical implications – The paper is intended to change the ways that researchers work in practical and concrete terms on issues of social (in)justice.Social implications – While this paper is theoretical, it argues for an alternative methodological approach to research that reorients researchers towards a politicised praxis with emancipatory relevancy.Originality/value – Emancipatory praxis offers a new, openly politicised methodological alternative for addressing problems of social relevance in marketing. As a continuous political and emancipatory task for researchers, social justice research involves empirical encounters with politics, advocacy and democratic participation, where equality is the methodological starting point for research design and decisions as much as it is the end goal. <br/
Visualising the foreign and the domestic in diaspora diplomacy: images and the online politics of recognition in #givingtoindia
Get PDFDiaspora diplomacy blurs the traditional conceptual dichotomies that map domestic and foreign policymaking efforts. Addressing how such distinctions are varyingly produced requires greater engagement with the way that diplomatic practice modulates the associations between belonging, nation and territory. This paper applies a semiotic analysis to a case study of the images circulated through the social media campaigns of the India Development Foundation of Overseas Indian (IDF-OI) between 2016 and 2017, a quasi-governmental organisation tasked with channelling diaspora philanthropy into state and national social and development projects. It shows that the connotative potential of images simultaneously positioned Indian diasporas as territorial stakeholders within these domestic agendas, whilst also generating performative representations of the diaspora as an extra-territorial global public. It argues that the images circulated through the IDF-OI’s digital platforms legitimised those particular voices that served both ideas, thereby empowering those with existing structural advantages. This paper suggests that with the increased use of social media in diaspora diplomacy, scholarship should engage with the richness of online platforms and the ambiguity of images as a specific component of those spaces, to better understand how diasporas are mobilised as non-state actors in contemporary international political affairs.</p
