James Bessen, Learning by Doing: the Real Connection between Innovation, Wages, and Wealth
Abstract. Across most industries, workers feel the effects of automation. Does innovation permanently replace workers or are they temporarily displaced within firms and labor markers? James Bessen’s book Learning by Doing combines theory and economic history to illustrate and inform readers and managers alike concerning modern labor markets.Keywords. Wages, Wealth, Innovation.JEL. Service innovation, perceived values, and post-purchase behavior
Abstract. In this conceptual paper, we argue that service innovation can generate positive impacts on post-purchase behavior only when customer’s perceived values of the product/service increases. That is, perceived value is a mediating, necessary condition for service innovation’s consequences in consumer behavior. Theoretical and practical implications are offered. Keywords. Service innovation, Value perception, Repurchase.JEL. M30, M31, M32, L84
The influences of cognition of institutional logics and triple helix relations on innovation performance: An empirical study of firms in industrial park in Taiwan
Abstract. The present study set out to investigate into the influences of cognition of institutional logics and triple helix relationships (i.e., the industry-university-government linkages) on firm innovation performance in the context of Taiwan industrial parks. The data from 131 organizational-level questionnaires collected from firms located in different industrial parks were analyzed. The results showed that cognition of institutional logics is positively associated with firms’ innovation performance. Furthermore, such positive relationship is strengthened by the number of triple helix relationships in the form of mediation but not moderation effect. Theoretical and practical implications were elaborated. Keywords. Cognition of institutional logics, Triple helix, Innovation performance, Industrial park.JEL. M10, M14
Institutional quality and economic growth in East African economies
Abstract. This study examines the effect of quality of institutions on economic growth in five East African countries using panel data for the period spanning from1996 to 2015. Fixed effects (FE) and random effects (RE) models were employed for estimation. Using Hausman test, FE was earmarked to be more appropriate model for this study. The empirical findings show that the quality of institution significantly impacts on economic growth. Political stability, government effectiveness, rule of law and control of corruption in particular are significant variables. Regulatory quality, voice and accountability indicate insignificant effect on growth. The results suggest that governance that promotes strong institutions is an important condition for economic growth. Particular focus should be focused on enhancing political stability, government effectiveness, rule of law and control of corruption so as to attain economic development. Keywords. Institutional quality, Economic growth, East Africa, Fixed effects.JEL. O43, E20, C33
The distribution and determinants of Turkey’s FDI positions in Africa
Abstract. This study investigates the key determinants of Turkey’s FDI positions in Africa by employing the gravity model. The major objective is to identify the core macroeconomic, socio-cultural, political, and governance-related determinants. PMLE is used in order to efficiently test the impact of dummy variables. Besides, three different models are estimated – the whole Africa, SSA and North African countries to investigate the variations in the FDI factors within the continent. The results illustrate that GDP size, per capita income, improvement in economic freedom and corruption levels, sharing common religion, improvement in easiness of doing businesses, and better political stability are attracting FDI from Turkey to Africa in general and SSA in particular. In the North African region, the FDI positions of Turkey are increasing in parallel to the GDP growth of Turkey, its import volume and the macroeconomic conditions of the hosting economiesh. Keywords. Turkey-Africa relations, Gravity model, FDI.JEL. B17, F21, C01, C23
Nominal Exchange Rate Dynamics for the Taka
Abstract. Error correction modeling is used to model the nominal exchange rate for the Bangladeshi taka. Based on existing trade volumes and trade practices, the bilateral exchange rate of the taka with the dollar is analyzed. Annual frequency data are utilized for the study. The sample data cover the four decade period from 1976 to 2015. Results indicate that a balance of payments modeling approach performs more reliably than a monetary balances approach.Keywords.
