sequence studies
In sequence studies, players use a limited set of sound materials, each of which is linked to a single cue. They listen to an audio track in which an artificial voice reads a sequence of cues, followed by a pause. In the pause, the players replicate the sequence using their sound materials as best they can. Each sequence may be different in some way, or the same as a previous sequence.
Each sequence lists the number of sounds needed and the cue words used. Players should prepare the correct number of sounds in advance, but not label them in any way. Sounds may be made by any source, including pitched and non-pitched instruments, objects and materials, or electronic sounds and samples. Each sound should be relatively short, such that it is recognisable as a discrete event. If more than one player is responding to a sequence, each player may use a different set of sounds, or sounds that are the same in some way (e.g. the same source, and/or the same pitches).
The only requirement is that each player sticks to their own selections as consistently as possible. The score for each sequence is a Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) file which can be played back in any artificial voice application which can read SSML, such as Google Cloud Text-to-Speech. Realisations may use any available artificial voice as preferred. The speed of the voice can also be adjusted, but in general there should be enough time in each pause to respond to the cues.
In performance, the audio playback of the artificial voice may be rendered live by the app, or prerecorded. It can be played back over any speaker setup, such that the audio playback and the sounds the players make are all audible and distinguishable spatially
5x5x5=creativity: art as a transformative practice
The purpose of this article is to share ideas from 5x5x5=creativity, a research initiative established in Bath (UK) in 2000, with the aim of developing and embedding a creative and reflective pedagogy in schools and early years settings. 5x5x5=creativity research, in partnership with schools, educators, artists, creative professionals, mentors and cultural centres, aims to raise the aspirations and improve the life chances of children and young people as creative learners. In our research we want to develop creative reflective practice and influence systemic educational change. This research defends the special role of the arts in developing a more flexible concept of education through curiosity and creativity, together with the capacity for the arts for allows ‘possibility thinking’ through a creative and critical pedagogy. In this article we analyse the impact of the artists’ involvement on the development of a creative, reflective pedagogy in schools. As both artists and educators we believe it is necessary to challenge current orthodoxies and establish creative and critical thinking at the heart of learning for both children and adults
Predictors of single word spelling in English speaking children: a cross sectional study
Background:-- The study aimed to explore to what extent variables associated with lexical and sublexical spelling processes predicted single word spelling ability and whether patterns of lexical and sublexical processes were different across ages.
Methods:-- Beginning (mean age 7 years, N = 144) and advanced (mean age 9 years, N = 114) English‐speaking spellers completed tasks associated with sublexical processing (phonological ability and phonological short‐term memory), lexical processing (visual short‐term memory and visual attention span) and factors known to predict spelling (e.g., rapid automatised naming).
Results:-- Phonological ability, rapid automatised naming, visual short‐term memory and visual attention span were significant predictors of spelling accuracy for beginning spellers, while for more advanced spellers, only visual attention span was a significant predictor.
Conclusions:-- The findings suggested that for beginning spellers, both lexical and sublexical processes are important for single word spelling, but with increasing literacy experience, lexically related variables are more important
Development of a creative platform for multiple-purpose predictions in tourism
This research aims to use the ideas and theories of Creative Computing to create a user-orientated and integrated predicting platform for tourism industry. In the process of rapid development of global tourism, there are many problems. The reason why this research chooses to study tourism prediction is that the analysis and resolution of many problems depend on the prediction of development trend. The main content of this research is to apply the idea and method of creative computing to tourism prediction. The tourism predicting platform established in this research is multi-functional and can meet the predicting requirements of users' sing or multiple targets. Seven prediction models were built and the corresponding algorithms were designed to achieve this.
In the process of building models, each model involves innovation based on the idea of creative computing. Some models use new techniques such as machine learning and neural networks. Some models use new methods, such as Gray model, gravity model. Some models use new variables, such as political, cultural and social factors. These have not been done before.
This research defines tourism multi-structured data with five dimensions: source, type, content, structure, and application value. And the content of multi-structured data is classified from three aspects: human basic needs, spiritual needs, and social connections. This research creates some new data collection rules and presentation rules. For example, physics rules, psychology rules, and knowledge combination rules for data collection. Colour psychology rules, pattern recognition rules for data presentation, etc.
Through the case study, the results of the predictions established in this research are very close to the real data, indicating that the prediction accuracy is high, and the prediction platform is reliable. It also shows that the research results based on creative computing have good application values
Optimization of enzyme‐assisted extraction of ferulic acid from sweet corn cob by response surface methodology
BACKGROUND
Sweet corn cob (SCC), an agricultural by-product of the corn-processing industry, contains more than 80% insoluble bound ferulic acid (FA). Extraction of these bound phenolics can be achieved through chemical or enzymatic hydrolysis; however, the shift towards greener chemistry has raised awareness about the use of enzymatic hydrolysis. In the present study, the ability of ferulic acid esterase (FAE) and xylanase (XY) to catalyze the hydrolysis of FA from SCC was investigated. Response surface methodology (RSM), based on a five-level, four-factor central composite rotatable design (CCRD), was used to establish the optimum conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis of FA from SCC. Sweet corn cob was treated with a combination of FAE and XY at various concentrations (FAE: 0.00 to 0.04 U/g; XY: 0.00 to 18 093.5 U/g), temperatures (45 to 65 °C), and pH levels (pH 4.5 to 6.5).
RESULTS
The optimum extraction conditions predicted by the model were: FAE concentration of 0.02 U/g, XY concentration of 3475.3 U/g, extraction pH of 4.5, and an extraction temperature of 45 °C.
CONCLUSION
Under these conditions, the experimental yield of FA was 1.69 ± 0.02 g kg−1 of SCC, which is in agreement with the value predicted by the model

Whose domain and whose ontology? Preserving human radical reflexivity over the efficiency of automatically generated feedback alone
In this chapter, we challenge an increase in the uncritical application of algorithmic processes for providing automatically generated feedback for students, within a neoliberal framing of contemporary higher education. Initially, we discuss our concerns alongside networked learning principles, which developed as a critical pedagogical response to new online learning programmes and platforms. These principles now overlap too, with the notion that we are living in ‘postdigital’ times, where automatically generated feedback never stands alone, but is contested and supplemented by physical encounters and human feedback. First, we make observations on the e-marking platform Turnitin, alongside other rapidly developing artificial intelligence (AI) systems. When generic (but power-laden) maps are incorporated into both student and staff ‘perceived’ spaces through AI, we surface the aspects of feedback that risk being lost. Second, we draw on autoethnographic understandings of our own lived experience of performing radically reflexive feedback within a Master’s in Education programme. A radically reflexive form of feedback may not follow a pre-defined map, but it does offer a vehicle to restore individual student and staff voices and critical self-navigation of both physical and virtual learning spaces. This needs to be preserved in the ongoing shaping of the contemporary ‘postdigital’ university
The barriers of income equality: comparison of Turkish and British investments within the telecommunication sector
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between
capital investments and inequality values (GINI) by focusing on the
same sector (Telecommunication) among two different countries.
While the research explores the investments in
Telecommunication which has more investment than other sectors,
Turkey and the United Kingdom are selected for the comparison.
Moreover, the research aims to suggest an econometric equation
for both countries. The data is derived from the database called
“Data Password” over 20 years. The statistical analyse is conducted
to investigate the relation between the GINI coefficient and
investment by using Anova and Regression analysis. While the
United Kingdom’s GINI index value fluctuated between max 36
minimum 33, its deviation is 0.761. Turkey’s GINI index varied
from 38 to 46, with over 2.500 variations. In terms of means of data,
over 20 years, which have considerable differences displayed;
while the amount of UK’s Capital Investment on
Telecommunication is 80 times larger than Turkey’s Investment,
Foreign Direct Investment account in the UK is 16 times bigger than
Turkey’s value. At the same time, the UK’s GINI has a significant
correlation with Capital Investment in Telecommunication. Capital 9
investment in Telecommunication has a significant positive
relation with Competitive Index and Corruption Index, whereas a
negative link with Consumer Expenditure. Whereas Turkey’s GINI
does not have any positive correlation with any other account, on
the contrary, it has a significant negative correlation with Capital
investment in Telecommunication, Foreign Direct Investment
Inflow and Control of Corruption Index. Lastly, the attempt to
suggest econometric formulation is failed for Turkey due to high
regression value (Sig 0.146), whereas the equation for the UK offers
as parameters are within the meaningful value (Sig 0.028)
Moral agency in tourism: is there a future for ethical tourism?
Given the growing concerns about global sustainability, morally-guided tourism should play
a significant part in tourism development. However, research on moral agency in tourism has
been neglected. This paper discusses critical problems in existing ethical tourism research
and develops an innovative critical realist framework that is more ontologically robust,
epistemologically correct and methodologically feasible. In addition to this theoretical
contribution, the paper reports on the author’s empirical investigation that is premised on the
framework to examine the moral mechanisms of a group of 31 undergraduate Chinese
tourism students. The research discovers: (1) moral template and reflexivity are constitutive
elements of moral agency; (2) these agential properties have generative powers (when
activated) permitting four mechanismic processes to emerge; (3) these moral mechanisms
explain the participants’ moral muteness. The close examination of the mechanisms reveals
the forces exerted from the structural levels of social structure and culture, and that from the
social interaction level. This finding suggests opportunities for China’s social and
institutional systems to responsibly develop tourism. The study has significant practical
implications for (1) China’s moral development of current and future industry personnel, and
(2) for the future of its morally-guided tourism practice
Human visual neurobiology
Human visual neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field of study which seeks to understand the processing of visual information by the eye and brain in humans and provides a well-studied model of how sensory systems enable organisms to interact with their environments
