An inadequate painted history of Mexico (2021) [REF2021 collection]
The series of paintings by Dexter Dalwood that form An Inadequate Painted History of Mexico arose from a residency in Mexico in 2017, and discussions with the local community and secondary school students Oaxaca state. The paintings have been constructed in order to raise questions in the viewer’s mind: What is the history that is being depicted? Who does this history belong to? Is it possible for an artist that is not from one culture to make images that are specifically about another culture
New expressions 3: heavy rock|Plymouth Sound (2015-2016) [REF2021 collection]
A contemporary response to the historic collections held at the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Heavy Rock|Plymouth Sound focused on the unceasing hidden construction process of the concrete Breakwater in Plymouth Sound. This public project extends Harrison's ongoing research into transforming matter through sound and making hidden processes public.
This Collection comprises a multi-component output with contextualising information, evidencing the opening of the Heavy Rock event and exhibition at KARST (2015). Heavy Rock was originally staged in Plymouth at KARST and on Plymouth Sound. Adapted for Material Language at the New Arts centre in 2016, Heavy Rock took the form of a specially fabricated marine ply version of the wooden replica Wavebreaker mould and was installed in the grounds of the New Arts Centre transmitting sound recordings from the original Wavebreaker that was in position on the Plymouth Breakwater.
Contextualising information includes a 300 word statement, research timeline, and research questions
The Book of Hours (2018) [REF2021 collection]
The Book of Hours is a contemporary re-imagining of a Medieval book of hours, via a 'calendar' of poetry films and a collection of poetry. Medieval books of hours were collections of hand-illustrated religious readings and accompanying images, created in a transportable size so they could be carried by the owner and read on a daily basis. They can also be seen as interactive texts as these books were not intended to be read chronologically. This Book of Hours project is secular in its themes, but the general mood is contemplative and reflective.
All the films have been made in collaboration between Dr Lucy English, a UK based spoken word poet and Lecturer in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University, and an international community of film makers. The poetry collection is authored solely by Dr Lucy English.
This Collection represents a multi-component output with contextualising information, including as outputs the website displaying a collection of poetry films, and a collection of poetry, originally published by Burning Eye Press. A sample of poems from this collection is provided open access. Contextualising information includes articles and blogs written by the researcher, detailing methods, processes, and approaches to the work
Zassho-Cascadia (2021) [REF2021 collection]
Zassho-Cascadia is the culmination of a long-term project that uses photography to consider the shared seismic histories and rupture probabilities in the tectonic subduction zones of Japan and NW America. It places the human experience of catastrophic earthquakes and tsunami in the context of deep time and scientific exploration.
This Collection contains documentation about the forthcoming monograph Zassho-Cascadia by Stephen Vaughan. The monograph was originally scheduled to be published in 2020, but was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Collection also contains a 300-word statement about the long-term research project of which Zassho-Cascadia is the culmination, along with a Timeline of the research project, a set of Research Questions, and details of research papers presented by Vaughan at several conferences
Witches can't be burned (2020) [REF2021 collection]
Witches Can’t Be Burned is a practice based research project initiated by Silva Semerciyan Drama Lecturer at Bath Spa University wherein the creation of a playscript became both an instrument and a process for challenging institutional sexism. The play investigated Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and the historical case of the Salem Witch trials through the lens of feminist critical theory to create a diverse narrative which opened up dialogue about the representation of girls and women in so-called ‘masterpieces’. Witches Can't Be Burned was commissioned by the National Theatre as part of their Connections Festival 2020 in which 19 youth theatre companies across the UK would perform the play.
This Collection comprises the output in the form of the play script, and contextualising information in the form of a 300-word statement, research timeline and research questions, video of a performance excerpt, and a video interview between Semerciyan and theatre director Orla O'Loughlin
Curious about care (2014-2018) [REF2021 collection]
Curious about Care is a series of painting machines reliant on the attention of others for their activation. By making public the role of care in the machine’s maintenance and upkeep this research seeks to understand if actively engaging the hand of others in the manufacture of a painting, in real time and with an audience, alters engagement and broadens access to the complex debates inherent in the works.
This Collection contains information about the international dissemination of Kidd's research at a number of exhibitions, including in Oxford, Leeds, London, Chicago (US), Taiwan, and Canberra (AUS) between 2014 and 2018. Also contained in the Collection is a 300-word statement about the research project, a research timeline and a set of research questions, along with contextualising information about the exhibitions, installation work, and presentations
