Combating Misinformation and Polarization in the Corporate Sphere: Integrating Social, Technological and AI Strategies

    Get PDF
In an era where misinformation and polarization present significant challenges, this research examines the root causes within social networks and assesses how corporations can use AI technologies for prompt detection. This research uses a dual approach: a "telephone game" with 225 participants from a Spanish university to study the spread of misinformation, and interviews with 15 experts from three French tech companies to investigate technological solutions. The findings indicate that almost one-third of participants inadvertently contribute to polarization, and around one-quarter propagated misinformation. The study also identifies the existing tools enhanced by AI and Machine Learning that effectively detect misinformation and polarization in corporate settings. This investigation provides crucial insights for practitioners to strengthen their strategies against misinformation and technical challenges and opportunities

The Art of My Autistic life

    No full text
In this chapter, it is my intent to provide a 60-year critical retrospective on my academic and professional life. Underlying the most recent 20-year period, I have been troubled by the oft-cited phrases: the art of leadership, or the art of management, or the art of some other such work practice or other. Taking things quite literally, no one could ever explain to me what they meant when they uttered those words. And no book that purported to offer the secrets of any art, could satisfy my curiosity. Why so literal? What did it matter? Well, to me, it matters a lot

Promoting Gender Equity: Enhancing Women’s Leadership in Nigerian Higher Education Institutions

    Get PDF
Having women in higher education leadership enriches the decision-making process, serves as role models for female students and facilitates achieving’ Sustainable Development Goals. However, women remain significantly underrepresented in leadership roles within Nigerian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), primarily due to cultural stereotypes, work-life balance challenges, and institutional biases. This policy brief presents a multi-faceted strategy to address these barriers, aiming to increase women’s leadership representation at all levels of academia. By implementing the outlined recommendations, Nigeria can advance gender equality in HEIs, diversify leadership, and contribute to its national development goals

Developing a web-based app for non-mental health nurses to assess the mental health needs and risks of children and young people

    No full text
There is high demand for specialist mental health services for children and young people in the UK. Non-mental health nurses are well-placed to assess the mental health needs and risks of children and young people to maximise opportunities for early intervention and relieve the pressure on child and adolescent mental health services. This article provides an overview of a service development project to develop a web-based application (app) to support non-mental health nurses when assessing the mental health needs and risks of children and young people. The article describes the development, testing and evaluation process, which involved consultation with children and young people as well as interviews, focus groups and an online survey with a range of professionals working with children and young people. Overall, the findings suggest that the app is appropriate for use by non-mental health nurses in terms of quality, functionality and acceptability. University-industry linkages: A bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review

    Get PDF
University-Industry Linkages (UILs) have always received enormous attention and acceptance due to the stakeholders’ belief that collaboration between academia and industry can be pivotal for innovation led economic growth and policy makers’ concerns that university research should be relevant to, and accessible by, industry. A heterogeneity of ideas exists in the field UILs due to its multidisciplinary nature. To portray the frontiers, status, categorization, trends, and future direction of the UILs research, present study had carried out a large-scale bibliometric analysis of the literature on UILs from 1980 to 2022. Furthermore, we present a systematic review of the ‘selected’ documents on UILs highlighted in bibliometric analysis to have a detailed and holistic understanding of the field. Finally, we have pointed out gaps existent in present literature, which provide direction to potential future research on UILs

Does the attractiveness of K‐culture shape the enjoyment of foreign language learners of Korean?

    Get PDF
Attraction to the target culture can be a reason to study the language, especially in the case of languages other than English (LOTEs). Recently, the number of Korean language learners has surged alongside the growing popularity of Korean pop culture (K‐pop). However, it is unknown whether the initial attraction to the culture and the first steps in that direction shape foreign language (FL) emotions in the longer term. To fill this gap, this mixed‐methods study examined to what extent the attractiveness of the Korean Culture (K‐culture) predicts foreign language enjoyment (FLE) after controlling for other established learner variables (i.e., the length of FL study, FL proficiency, frequency of FL use outside of class, and attitudes toward the teacher and FL) through sequential regression analysis. The quantitative findings are complemented by the open‐ended responses to the sources of FLE using the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages 3Ps framework (products, practices, and perspectives) through NVivo. A total of 782 university students studying Korean as FL completed an online survey on the attractiveness of K‐culture and FLE. The results showed that the attitude toward the teacher and attractiveness of K‐culture are the strongest predictors of FLE

Ensemble-based deep learning model for welding defect detection and classification

    No full text
This study introduces an ensemble-based deep learning approach for monitoring and detecting submerged arc weld defects in weld beads and adjacent zones during Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). The methodology utilizes an open-source image dataset to categorize submerged arc weld conditions into three defect types: cracks, lack of penetration and porosity, and ideal welds (no defects). To enhance image analysis, we employ preprocessing and feature extraction in both spatial and frequency domains using segmentation techniques like grey level difference method (GLDM), grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), discrete wavelet transform (DWT), Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and texture analysis. Following image preparation, the preprocessed data undergoes training and testing in our proposed ensemble-based deep learning model. The model's performance is thoroughly assessed using key metrics such as precision, recall, F1 score, receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, and a confusion matrix, resulting in an impressive accuracy rate of 93.12% for detecting and classifying weld faults. In comparing our model to state-of-the-art techniques in existing literature, our ensemble-based deep learning approach consistently demonstrates a high fault detection and classification performance in the face of a simplistic MLP-based core architecture, ratifying the robustness of our feature ensemble approach. The study concludes that this model has significant potential for integration into current inspection systems, offering an efficient and robust solution for real-time condition monitoring of welds along weldment joints
