Through semi-structured interviews with 30 industry leaders, this research examines key ethical leadership practices and the challenges of balancing local cultural norms with global expectations. The analysis focuses on how ethical leadership influences employee satisfaction and guest experiences, and the findings underscore the importance of continuous training, clear ethical guidelines, and stakeholder engagement. The study offers practical recommendations for strengthening ethical leadership, contributing to the long-term success and sustainability of hospitality organizations in Dubai’s multicultural environment
Spatiotemporal evolution of air-sea CO 2 flux in the Northwest Pacific and its response to ENSO
Get PDFGlobal warming, driven by human activities since the Industrial Revolution, has significantly elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, leading to higher global temperatures and a rise in extreme weather events. The ocean, as a major carbon sink, has absorbed about 30% of human-induced carbon emissions, helping mitigate global warming’s impacts. This study examines the spatiotemporal distribution of air-sea CO2 flux in the Northwest Pacific from 1982 to 2021 and its response to El Niño-Southern Oscillation, using Empirical Orthogonal Function and composite analysis. The seasonal patterns of air-sea CO2 flux and the influence of environmental factors were further evaluated. The results show that air-sea CO2 flux in the Northwest Pacific exhibits clear seasonal fluctuations. In winter, high-latitude areas act as significant carbon sources. Strong winds deepen the mixed layer, promoting CO2 release from the ocean into the atmosphere. In contrast, in summer, longer daylight hours, rising SST, and melting sea ice lead to upwelling, which brings nutrients to the surface and stimulates phytoplankton growth. This process turns the region into a carbon sink as phytoplankton growth, driven by intense sunlight, enhances the ocean’s CO2 absorption. The mid-latitude region consistently acts as a carbon sink year-round. During El Niño events, more negative air-sea CO2 flux anomalies appear in the eastern Northwest Pacific, enhancing carbon uptake. La Niña events have the opposite effect in the eastern regions. These findings highlight the Northwest Pacific’s critical role in modulating regional and global carbon cycles under varying climatic conditions. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for improving predictions of future climate impacts and for developing effective strategies to mitigate global warming

Changing Ideological Regimes: CEO Succession with Change in Political Ideology and New CEO Early Departure
Get PDFWe examine the effects of CEO succession coupled with a change in political ideology – when a conservative CEO is replaced by a liberal CEO or vice versa. We argue that in such CEO transitions, the new CEOs must alter their predecessors’ ideological imprints to imbue strategic leadership with their own values, which increases their executive job demands in the critical early years of their tenure and raises the likelihood of their early departure. We also suggest that this relationship is moderated by two strategic leadership interface (SLI) factors that influence the executive job demands these new CEOs face: (a) the retention of the ideologically incongruent predecessor as board chair, and (b) the ideological fit between the new CEO and the incumbent executive team. We first test our framework using data from 2286 CEO successions in S&P 1500 firms. We then conduct an experimental study to ensure causality and confirm executive job demands as a mediating mechanism underlying the relationship. Overall, our study advances the disruption theory of succession by shedding light on the deeply held mechanisms that lead to early failure in CEO transitions

Balancing growth and sustainability: COP 28 policy implications of green energy, industrialization, foreign direct investment, and globalization in South Asia
No full textThis research investigates the intricate relationships between economic variables and how they affect South Asian nation's ability to develop sustainably. Given the growing concerns about climate change and global warming brought on by emissions of greenhouse gases, this study looks into the connection between emissions of CO2, green energy, industrialization, foreign direct investment, economic globalization, and financial development from 1995 to 2022. Second-generation panel techniques were employed in this study to look at the relationship between variables because of the potential of residual cross-sectional dependency and heterogeneity. The empirical outcomes display that green energy, economic globalization, and financial development reduce CO2 emissions by 1.839%, 1.223%, and 3.902% respectively. Industrialization and foreign direct investment degrade the environment by 4.302% and 1.893% respectively. A bidirectional causality link between green energy, industrialization, economic globalization, and CO2 emissions was found by Dumitrescu and Hurlin (D-H). Based on our findings, we recommend legislative support for renewable energy, cleaner technologies, and strict environmental regulations, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Encouraging FDI, sustainable practices, and financial development can drive economic growth while preserving the environment. As we approach COP28, this holistic approach to sustainable development becomes increasingly vital for South Asian countries to achieve their SDG targets and combat climate change
Unveiling customer engagement dynamics in the metaverse: A retrospective bibliometric and topic modelling investigation
Get PDFThis study is a comprehensive retrospective bibliometric and topic modelling analysis of customer engagement within the metaverse. We carefully investigated a sample of 409 articles extracted from the Scopus database and used in this analysis. The aim was to explore the evolution, current state, and emerging trends in this rapidly evolving field. Utilizing advanced bibliometric tools including Biblioshiny and ScientoPy, alongside network visualisation software VOSviewer, we systematically mapped the intellectual landscape, identifying key publications, authors, and institutions that have significantly contributed to the discourse. Furthermore, through machine learning-based Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) analysis, we dissected the thematic structure of the literature, revealing the predominant topics and their interrelations. Our findings highlighted the dynamic nature of customer engagement strategies in the metaverse, emphasizing Design of Immersive Platforms, Personalisation & Customization, and the Interaction & Participation implications of virtual interactions. This study not only synthesizes existing knowledge but also uncovers gaps in the literature, suggesting directions for future research. By providing a holistic view of the domain, this research serves as a valuable resource for academics, practitioners, and policymakers interested in the intersection of customer engagement and virtual environments
Early sexual debut and pregnancy termination: uncovering the link among sexually active young women in 23 sub-Saharan African countries
Get PDFBackground: Unplanned pregnancy could be a socio-economic burden for many young women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) which often leads to pregnancy termination. The role of age at sexual debut in pregnancy termination in countries with lower income remains unknown. Hence, this study examines the association between age at sexual debut and pregnancy termination among sexually active young women between the ages of 15 -24 in 23 SSA countries. Methods: Cross-sectional secondary datasets from the most recent Demographic and Health Survey conducted in 23 countries in SSA conducted between 2010 and 2018 among 34,343 sexually active young women were analysed using bivariate and multivariable logistic regression to examine the association between age at sexual debut and pregnancy termination with statistical significance of p < 0.05. Results: The pooled prevalence of pregnancy termination among sexually active young women in SSA was 11.00%. Higher odds of pregnancy termination were found among those who had early sexual debut (below 16 years) [(aOR = 1.34, 95% CI = (1.22–1.48)] compared to those who had late sexual debut. Furthermore, those who were exposed to mass media [(aOR = 1.29, 95% CI = (1.16–1.43)] were more likely to report pregnancy termination compared to those who were not exposed. On the other hand, those residing in rural areas and those within the richest wealth index were associated with lower odds of pregnancy termination. Conclusion: The study concluded that early sexual debut of sexually active young women in SSA was significantly associated with pregnancy termination. Mass media exposure was found to be a risk factor for pregnancy termination whilst residing in rural areas, and those within the richest wealth index were protective factors. Interventions should be designed to target young women with early sexual debut to provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education to enable them to make informed decisions on pregnancy termination
Exploring consumer behavioral intentions toward energy-efficient vehicles: an empirical study for advancing sustainable development goals

This study aims to examine the key factors influencing consumer behavioral intentions toward energy-efficient vehicles (EEVs) in the context of promoting renewable energy and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, it focuses on SDG 7 (“affordable and clean energy”) and SDG 13 (“climate action”). The research investigates how the theory of consumption values – functional, symbolic, emotional and conditional values – shapes consumers’ intentions, with attitudes toward EEVs as a mediating factor.
Design/methodology/approach
A quantitative research methodology was used, with data collected through structured surveys. The data was analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to assess the relationships between consumption values and consumer behavioral intentions toward EEVs. The mediating effect of attitudes toward EEV adoption was also examined in this model.
Findings
The study found that consumer behavioral intentions toward EEVs are significantly influenced by consumption values, with functional value having the greatest impact. Attitudes toward EEV adoption played a crucial mediating role in the relationship between consumption values and behavioral intentions. Symbolic, emotional and conditional values also contributed positively, though to a lesser extent than functional value.
Originality/value
This research offers novel insights into the factors driving consumer interest in EEVs, providing a comprehensive understanding of how consumption values shape attitudes and intentions. The findings provide practical value for policymakers and researchers in crafting strategies to accelerate EEV adoption, contributing to the achievement of global sustainability goals. The use of PLS-SEM enhances the rigor of the analysis, making this study a valuable contribution to both academic and practical discussions on sustainable transportation
