The challenges of navigating participatory research: the perspective of a doctoral student who co-ordinates a team of researchers with lived experience of mental health challenges
Participatory research (PR) involves people with lived experiences of the research topic as co-creators of knowledge. I have the dual role of being both a doctoral researcher and the co-ordinator of a research group – the Converge Evaluation and Research Team (CERT) – which consists of researchers with lived experience of mental health challenges. I am using evaluation projects conducted by CERT to offer insightful case studies for my doctoral research, in which I am exploring coproduction in mental health research. I use learning from my doctoral research to explore how CERT can maximise opportunities for coproduction. Using a CERT evaluation of an arts project for adults with severe and enduring mental health challenges as an exemplar, this article considers my reflections on the challenges of PR as a doctoral researcher elucidated by Southby (2017): power and sharing control; adhering to the standards and procedures of an individualistic academy; inexperience and fear of failure; competing priorities; and time and effort. In addition, remuneration is also considered as a crucial challenge in contemporary research
AI-Based Solution for Sustainability Tracing for Companies
Many companies look for novel ways to trace their operational sustainability. The application of AI to analyze and make sense of the big data the company holds represents one promising approach for this aim. The authors study how one can set and design an AI-based solution for improving the sustainability of complex business processes and decision-making in companies of different types. First, they provide a general analysis of current frameworks for measuring adherence to sustainability goals for companies, then they present a conceptual framework and architecture design for an AI-enabled sustainability service for companies. The implications of our research suggest that AI can provide distinct functions: (a) automation: taking big data from different departments and analyzing them with the aim of tracing the sustainability of the company; (b) support: to help decision-making and create relevant insights for stakeholders that are coherent with defined sustainability decision criteria. To the authors' knowledge, no previous research has provided analysis and design of such AI solution for companies
3 Keys to Strengthen Cooperative Democracy w/ Owen Powell
In this episode of Punchcard, we sit down with Owen Powell, a lecturer and researcher with a focus on cooperative democracy. Owen first cut his teeth in the Young Cooperators Network, a national initiative formed by young people seeking cooperative alternatives to traditional economic models following the 2008 financial crash. Since then, he has completed a PhD that examined how larger and more established worker cooperatives maintain collectivist democracy over time.
In his PhD research, Owen identified 3 critical factors for strengthening cooperative democracy:

2. A Culture of Reviewing and Refreshing Established Norms
3. Bringing in Learning and Expertise from Outside
Owen remains deeply committed to the cooperative movement, actively contributing to workers.coop as a member of their research working group. The group has already published two significant reports on the organisation’s collectivist health, offering valuable insights into the sustainability of cooperative principles.

Enhancing Healthcare Delivery Through Digital Health Interventions: A Systematic Review on Telemedicine and Mobile Health Applications in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs)
This study explores the role of telemedicine and mobile health (mHealth) technologies in improving healthcare delivery within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A thorough review of existing literature reveals that these technologies have made significant strides in enhancing healthcare access, diagnostics, and patient outcomes, particularly in underserved and remote areas. Key findings indicate that telemedicine has played a crucial role in enabling early disease detection, boosting maternal and child health, and promoting improved medication adherence among patients. Nevertheless, the study also uncovers significant barriers that impede the effective implementation of these technologies, including inadequate infrastructure, unreliable internet connections, limited digital literacy, regulatory challenges, lack of funding, and a shortage of trained healthcare professionals. Additionally, the review notes its limitations, such as the omission of grey literature and inconsistencies in regional research coverage, which may impact the overall findings. To address these challenges, the study emphasises the need for LMICs to invest in technological infrastructure, improve digital literacy, create comprehensive regulatory frameworks, and secure sustainable funding sources. Furthermore, integrating telemedicine into national healthcare strategies and enhancing public awareness are critical steps to fully leverage the advantages of these technologies, ultimately fostering equitable healthcare access and improved health outcomes in resource-constrained environments
Allergen immunotherapy using recombinant Culicoides allergens improves clinical signs of equine insect bite hypersensitivity
Introduction: Insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) is an IgE-mediated allergic dermatitis of horses caused by bites of Culicoides spp., sharing some common features with human atopic dermatitis. Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) using Culicoides whole-body extracts has limited efficacy. This study aimed to evaluate AIT with a pool of major Culicoides recombinant allergens in a prospective, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study. Methods: The IBH lesion score was assessed during a pre-treatment year and first treatment year (May–October) in 17 horses and in May and July of a second treatment year. Nine horses were immunized subcutaneously 3× with a combination of nine r-allergens (20 μg each/injection) in alum and monophosphoryl lipid A (MPLA). Eight horses received a placebo. The immunization was repeated twice the following year. The specific antibody response to one of the AIT Culicoides r-allergens was assessed. Results: In the first treatment year, the decrease in average IBH lesion score was significantly larger in the AIT compared to the placebo group, with 67% of the AIT group and 25% of the placebo horses reaching >50% improvement of the average IBH lesion score. The response to the AIT was enhanced in the 2nd treatment year when 89% of the AIT vs. 14% of the placebo horses showed an improvement (p ≤ 0.01). IgG antibodies of all subclasses were induced, with IgG4/7 showing the most significant differences between groups. The post-AIT sera showed IgE blocking activity. Discussion: AIT using only a few injections of small amounts of r-allergens in alum and MPLA as immunomodulators seems a promising approach for the treatment of insect bite allergy
