    Middle Bronze Age II Battleaxes from Rishon LeZion, Israel: Archaeology and Metallurgy

    Thirteen bronze battleaxes from Middle Bronze Age II graves at Rishon LeZion, Israel were analysed by ED XRF at multiple surface locations in order to determine their metallurgical composition. Six of these were further subjected to neutron diffraction using an ENGIN-X diffractometer in order to determine bulk phase composition. The results indicate that the previously established geographical and chronological variability in Sn–Cu (with occasional Pb) and As–Cu alloys found using the former method may be an artefact of preservation and conservation. In addition, the varying homogeneity determined by the latter reflects special treatment for improving on the metal cast.© 2013, University of Oxford

    Evolution with applied field of the magnetic structure of TbNiAl4

    Neutron powder diffraction data of TbNiAl4 has been re-examined using a representational analysis, allowing a new model of the magnetic structure to be deduced. The basis vectors obtained describe an ‘elliptical helix’ type structure in which the moments rotate in the ab-plane as one moves along the c-axis. This new model has been used to simulate the expected result of a Low Temperature Nuclear Orientation (LTNO) experiment involving 299 keV gamma-ray emission from the 160Dy daughter of aligned 160Tb nuclei. Results of the simulation along the a-axis appear to partly match currently existing experimental data, with good agreement in the magnitude of lost anisotropy. © 2014, Springer International Publishing

    Large magnetoelectric coupling in magnetically short-range ordered Bi5Ti3FeO15 film

    Multiferroic materials, which offer the possibility of manipulating the magnetic state by an electric field or vice versa, are of great current interest. However, single-phase materials with such cross-coupling properties at room temperature exist rarely in nature; new design of nano-engineered thin films with a strong magneto-electric coupling is a fundamental challenge. Here we demonstrate a robust room-temperature magneto-electric coupling in a bismuth-layer-structured ferroelectric Bi5Ti3FeO15 with high ferroelectric Curie temperature of ~1000 K. Bi5Ti3FeO15 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition are single-phase layered perovskit with nearly (00l)-orientation. Room-temperature multiferroic behavior is demonstrated by a large modulation in magneto-polarization and magneto-dielectric responses. Local structural characterizations by transmission electron microscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy reveal the existence of Fe-rich nanodomains, which cause a short-range magnetic ordering at ~620 K. In Bi5Ti3FeO15 with a stable ferroelectric order, the spin canting of magnetic-ion-based nanodomains via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction might yield a robust magneto-electric coupling of ~400 mV/Oe·cm even at room temperature. © 2020 Springer Nature Limite

    Plant Life on the Sandplains in Southwest Australia is an entirely new venture and is not an update of the earlier book on a similar topic edited and produced some thirty years ago by John Beard and myself. Firstly, it embraces a far broader range of topics, themes and conceptual issues, and features chapters on plant–animal interactions, conservation, phylogenetics and Aboriginal use of plants. Secondly, it employs almost three times the number of authors, including several new postgraduate and early-career scientists and, serendipitously, only a few of the old brigade commissioned for the earlier book! Thirdly, it covers a wide variety of approaches, methodologies and techniques, proving how well the contributors are using those state-of-the art tools which are so integral to current biological research. Finally, the standard of presentation of visual material and the ‘reader-friendly’ approach is exemplary. Without doubt, the authors and publishers have taken full advantage of the extraordinary escalation in publishing techniques over the past few decades

    Pressure dependence of crystal structure of Cu2O by TOF powder neutron diffraction

    Neutron diffraction measurements were performed on powder Cu2O with different samples that are pressure released after a pressing force of 295 K with iMATERIA (IBARAKI Materials Designed Diffractometer) installed at MLF in J-PARC. Peak widths of Bragg lines increased depending on the pressing force. To clarify the relation between the crystallite size and the microstrain effect, Rietveld refinement analysis on a TOF neutron diffraction pattern of Cu2O was performed by assuming a cubic cuprite type structure (space group Pn-3m). Strain and crystallite size effects were estimated from Lorentzian terms in the Pseudo-Voigt profile function with a pair of Back-to-Back exponential types based on the Stephenes model. It is considered that the increasing peak width according to the dependence of pressing force is mainly derived from strain effects. And this result is consistent with the previous studies of Ag2O where the Williamson–Hall plot method by X-ray diffraction was applied. © 2013, Elsevier B.V

    On the temperature dependence of H-Uiso in the riding hydrogen model

    The temperature dependence of H-Uiso in N-acetyl-L-4-hydroxyproline monohydrate is investigated. Imposing a constant temperature-independent multiplier of 1.2 or 1.5 for the riding hydrogen model is found to be inaccurate, and severely underestimates H-Uiso below 100 K. Neutron diffraction data at temperatures of 9, 150, 200 and 250 K provide benchmark results for this study. X-ray diffraction data to high resolution, collected at temperatures of 9, 30, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200 and 250 K (synchrotron and home source), reproduce neutron results only when evaluated by aspherical-atom refinement models, since these take into account bonding and lone-pair electron density; both invariom and Hirshfeld-atom refinement models enable a more precise determination of the magnitude of H-atom displacements than independent-atom model refinements. Experimental efforts are complemented by computing displacement parameters following the TLS+ONIOM approach. A satisfactory agreement between all approaches is found

    Microporous gold: comparison of textures from nature and experiments

    Recent experiments have shown that microporous gold can be obtained via the oxidative dealloying of Au(Ag)-tellurides such as calaverite (AuTe2), krennerite (Au3AgTe8), and sylvanite [(Au,Ag)2Te4] under mild hydrothermal conditions. The same Au textures have been found in natural gold-telluride ores from the Late Miocene epithermal Aginskoe Au-Ag-Te deposit in Kamchatka, Russia. This confirms that natural microporous gold can form via the replacement of telluride minerals. This replacement may take place under hydrothermal conditions, e.g., during the late stage of the ore-depositing event, explaining the wide distribution of “mustard gold” in some deposits. At Aginskoe, the oxidation of Au-tellurides appears to have resulted only in local redistribution of Au and Te, because the associated oxidation of chalcopyrite scavenged the excess Te, inhibiting the crystallization of secondary Te minerals more than a few micrometers in size. Such cryptic mobility may explain the lack of reported secondary Te minerals in many Te-bearing deposits. © 2014, Mineralogical Society of America

    Generation of vacancy cluster-related defects during single MeV silicon ion implantation of silicon

    Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy (DLTS) has been used to study defects formed in bulk silicon after implantation of 8.3 MeV 28Si3+ ions at room temperature. For this study, Schottky diodes prepared from n-type Czohralski-grown silicon wafers have been implanted in the single ion regime up to fluence value of 1 × 1010 cm−2 utilizing the scanning focused ion microbeam as implantation tool and the Ion Beam Induced Current (IBIC) technique for ion counting. Differential DLTS analysis of the vacancy-rich region in self-implanted silicon reveals a formation of the broad vacancy-related defect state(s) at Ec −0.4 eV. Direct measurements of the electron capture kinetics associated with this trap at Ec −0.4 eV, prior to any annealing do not show an exponential behaviour typical for the simple point-like defects. The logarithmic capture kinetics is in accordance with the theory of majority carrier capture at extended or cluster-related defects. We have detected formation of two deep electron traps at Ec −0.56 eV and Ec −0.61 eV in the interstitial-rich region of the self-implanted silicon, before any annealing. No DLTS signal originating from vacancy-oxygen trap at Ec −0.17 eV, present in the sample irradiated with 0.8 MeV neutrons, has been recorded in the self-implanted sample. © 2014, Elsevier B.V

    Characterisation of embedded nano-precipitates by X-ray diffraction imaging and small-angle X-ray scattering

    We report on the characterisation of embedded Al2Cu nanoparticles in Al matrix by X-ray diffraction imaging and small-angle X-ray scattering. We employed direct retrieval of the average morphological characteristics of the nanoparticles from their diffraction pattern. Data suggest the possibility of acquiring truly 3D information with X-ray diffraction imaging. Validation of the results obtained with small-angle X-ray scattering is reported. © 2020 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd

    Archaeological implications of a widespread 13th Century tephra marker across the central Indonesian Archipelago.

    Despite the occurrence of exceptionally large eruptions in the Indonesian Archipelago in recent historic times (i.e. Krakatoa 1883, Tambora 1815), no historic tephra beds have been widely identified in the terrestrial realm that could facilitate the correlation of equivalent aged sequences and/or archaeological remains. This study has identified one such tephra bed of 13th Century age that can be correlated throughout central-east Java and now can be unequivocally correlated with the Samalas 1257 A.D. tephra recently described from Lombok. The occurrence of this historic tephra marker extending ≥650 km west from its eruptive source provides the first opportunity to effect inter-regional correlation over large swathes of central Indonesia. It remains entirely conceivable that in the aftermath of this exceptionally large eruptive event there was considerable westward disruption to subsistence agriculture and trade, food shortages and famine, dislocation of affected populations and socio-political unrest on a scale that equalled or exceeded the catastrophic effects documented from the more recent Tambora 1815 A.D. eruption. Indeed the effects of this mid-13th Century eruption can be registered globally in a variety of records from Antarctica, Europe, Middle East and the Americas. Unfortunately, archaeological evidence indicating such disruption in mid-13th Century Indonesia is yet to be deciphered from the so-far sparse accounts and inscriptions of that time. However, this paucity of evidence does not diminish the utility of this widespread tephra bed as a unique chronostratigraphic marker for archaeological studies across large areas of central Indonesia. © 2016, Elsevier Ltd
