National Drugs Strategy 2009-2016
14.5.2015
Drugs misuse continues to be one of the most significant challenges facing our country.  It is highly destructive and has devastating effects on individuals, relationships, families, communities and society in general.
Implementation of the National Drugs Strategy 2009-2016, which sets out Government policy in dealing with the drugs problem, is being pursued across a range of Government Departments and Agencies. Solid progress is being made across the 63 Actions of the Strategy, which are based around the five pillars of supply reduction, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and research. The Oversight Forum on Drugs, which will be Chaired by Minister Ã" RÃÂordáin, meets on a quarterly basis and reviews the implementation of the Strategy. The 2014 Annual Progress Report on the implementation of the actions of the National Drugs Strategy is available here
Emergency Department Task Force Report
2.4.2015
In December 2014, Minister Varadkar convened the Emergency Department Taskforce to provide focus and momentum, and to develop sustainable long-term solutions to ED overcrowding.
On 2 April, 2015, with Minister Lynch, Minister Varadkar announced additional funding to tackle Delayed Discharges and ED Overcrowding and published the Taskforce Action Plan. The Plan sets out a range of time defined actions to (i) optimise existing hospital and community capacity; (ii) develop internal capability and process improvement and (iii) improve leadership, governance, planning and oversight.
This comes on top of measures already taken in Budget 2015, when the Government provided â,¬25 million to support services that provide alternatives to, and relieve pressure on, acute hospitals.

The Health Behaviours in School Children (HBSC) survey 2014
9.12.2015
The Health Behaviours in School Children (HBSC) survey 2014 shows that overall health levels are good. There are encouraging findings on consumption of fruit and vegetables, teeth cleaning, and a drop in smoking levels and consumption of sweets and soft drinks.  However, many children said they find it easy to get cigarettes, too many children are going to bed hungry, and there are concerns about levels of cyber bullying.
A total of 13,611 pupils were surveyed with questions on topics like general health, food and dietary behaviour, exercise and physical activity, self-care, smoking, use of alcohol and other substances, bullying including cyber bullying, and sexual health behaviours.

Prevalence of overweight and obesity and its contribution to Disease Burden in Ireland:1990–2010
BackgroundThe alarming increase in overweight and obesity is a global public health challenge. Accurate estimates of related disease conditions are crucial for informing national health policies. Different organizations (WHO, World Bank) have computed varying estimates in the past. We employed the recent Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study methodology for international comparability. We provide detailed estimates on five major non-communicable diseases (NCDs) attributable to overweight and obesity between the two time periods (1990 and 2010) in Ireland
Improving young people's health and wellbeing: a framework for public health
The Framework has been developed as a resource to enable local areas in the delivery of their public health role for young people. It poses questions for councillors, health and wellbeing boards, commissioners, providers and education and learning settings to help them support young people to be healthy and to improve outcomes for young people. This is a new framework, which has been developed with support from Association of Young People’s Health and with input from those across health, education, youth services and local and national government
