    Traced monoidal categories as algebraic structures in Prof

    We define a traced pseudomonoid as a pseudomonoid in a monoidal bicategory equipped with extra structure, giving a new characterisation of Cauchy complete traced monoidal categories as algebraic structures in Prof, the monoidal bicategory of profunctors. This enables reasoning about the trace using the graphical calculus for monoidal bicategories, which we illustrate in detail. We apply our techniques to study traced ∗-autonomous categories, proving a new equivalence result between the left ⊗-trace and the right ⅋-trace, and describing a new condition under which traced ∗-autonomous categories become autonomous

    A tale of two wares: an unusual type of Late Neolithic vessels from Gansu Province, China

    A group of pots found at Majiayao-period Neolithic sites in Gansu and Qinghai Provinces is very special. As they are made of two parts – one coarse ware with a rusticated surface and one fine ware with a burnished, painted surface – we named the phenomenon Double-Wares. This group was acknowledged by Bylin-Ahltin and Sommarström in their analysis of ceramics from the Andersson collections but not studied further. Double-Wares defy a central rule in pottery making, to strive for a homogenous paste to avoid diverse rates of shrinkage leading to cracks during drying and firing. In this study, sherds from 15 different vessels of this type have been analysed by thin-section analysis. The results show different combinations of clays and tempers as well as different ways of uniting the two wares devised to reduce the risk of cracks along the joint. It suggests that different potters made both fine and coarse ware as well as Double-Wares. All known examples of Double-Wares are settlement finds and most are fragments of large vessels from spouted basins to two-handled shouldered jars. More pots of this type have been found in recent excavations at Majiayao and may have come out at other sites as well, though they were not recognized as a special phenomenon by the excavators. Double-Wares demonstrate a close connection between fabric and design and that the joining of fine and coarse ware despite the practical problems must have been meaningful. Future research should aim at exploring the meaning behind this unusual phenomenon

    Marine alkaloids as bioactive agents against protozoal neglected tropical diseases and malaria

    Covering: 2000 up to 2021 Natural products are an important resource in drug discovery, directly or indirectly delivering numerous small molecules for potential development as human medicines. Among the many classes of natural products, alkaloids have a rich history of therapeutic applications. The extensive chemodiversity of alkaloids found in the marine environment has attracted considerable attention for such uses, while the scarcity of these natural materials has stimulated efforts towards their total synthesis. This review focuses on the biological activity of marine alkaloids (covering 2000 to up to 2021) towards Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) caused by protozoan parasites, and malaria. Chemotherapy represents the only form of treatment for Chagas disease, human African trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis and malaria, but there is currently a restricted arsenal of drugs, which often elicit severe adverse effects, show variable efficacy or resistance, or are costly. Natural product scaffolds have re-emerged as a focus of academic drug discovery programmes, offering a different resource to discover new chemical entities with new modes of action. In this review, the potential of a range of marine alkaloids is analyzed, accompanied by coverage of synthetic efforts that enable further studies of key antiprotozoal natural product scaffolds

    Strategies for preventing occupational stress in healthcare workers: past evidence, current problems

    The problem of occupational stress in healthcare workers is hardly new, but effective interventions in this area are lacking despite being sorely needed – especially in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The results of a Cochrane review suggest that cognitive–behavioural therapy and mental and physical relaxation reduce stress more than no intervention but not more than alternative interventions, and that changing work schedules may lead to a reduction of stress. Other organisational interventions showed no effect on stress levels. However, the evidence is of low quality owing to risk of bias and lack of precision. This commentary critically appraises the review and attempts to put its findings into the current real-world context

    Revealing a high water abundance in the upper mesosphere of Mars with ACS onboard TGO

    We present the first water vapor profiles encompassing the upper mesosphere of Mars, 100–120 km, far exceeding the maximum altitudes where remote sensing has been able to observe water to date. Our results are based on solar occultation measurements by Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS) onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). The observed wavelength range around 2.7 μm possesses strong CO2 and H2O absorption lines allowing sensitive temperature and density retrievals. We report a maximum H2O mixing ratio varying from 10 to 50 ppmv at 100–120 km during the global dust storm (GDS) of Martian Year (MY) 34 and around southern summer solstice of MY 34 and 35. During other seasons water remains persistently below ∼2 ppmv. We claim that contributions of the MY34 GDS and perihelion periods into the projected hydrogen escape from Mars are nearly equivalent

    Piperaquine pharmacokinetics during intermittent preventive treatment for malaria in pregnancy

    Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) is a long-acting artemisinin combination treatment that provides effective chemoprevention and has been proposed as an alternative antimalarial drug for intermittent preventive therapy in pregnancy (IPTp). Several pharmacokinetic studies have shown that dose adjustment may not be needed for the treatment of malaria in pregnancy with DP. However, there are limited data on the optimal dosing for IPTp. This study aimed to evaluate the population pharmacokinetics of piperaquine given as IPTp in pregnant women. Pregnant women were enrolled in clinical trials conducted in Kenya and Indonesia and treated with standard 3-day courses of DP, administered in 4- to 8-week intervals from the second trimester until delivery. Pharmacokinetic blood samples were collected for piperaquine drug measurements before each treatment round, at the time of breakthrough symptomatic malaria, and at delivery. Piperaquine population pharmacokinetic properties were investigated using nonlinear mixed-effects modeling with a prior approach. In total, data from 366 Kenyan and 101 Indonesian women were analyzed. The pharmacokinetic properties of piperaquine were adequately described using a flexible transit absorption (n = 5) followed by a three-compartment disposition model. Gestational age did not affect the pharmacokinetic parameters of piperaquine. After three rounds of monthly IPTp, 9.45% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.8 to 26.5%) of pregnant women had trough piperaquine concentrations below the suggested target concentration (10.3 ng/ml). Translational simulations suggest that providing the full treatment course of DP at monthly intervals provides sufficient protection to prevent malaria infection. Monthly administration of DP has the potential to offer optimal prevention of malaria during pregnancy.     Unique behavioural modifications in the web structure of the cave orb spider Meta menardi (Araneae, Tetragnathidae)

    In the last decade there has been a renewed interest in the study of behavioural adaptations to environmental constraints with a focus on adaptations to challenging habitats due to their reduced ecological complexity. However, behavioural studies on organisms adapted to nutrient poor subterranean habitats are few and far between. Here, we compared both morphological traits, in terms of relative leg lengths, and behavioural traits, captured in the geometry of the spider web, between the cave-dwelling spider, Meta menardi, and two aboveground species from the same family (Tetragnathidae); Metellina mengei and Tetragnatha montana. We found that the webs of the cave spider differed significantly from the two surface-dwelling species. The most dramatic difference was the lack of frame threads with the radii in the webs instead attaching directly to the surrounding rock, but other differences in relative web size, web asymmetry and number of capture spiral threads were also found. We argue that these modifications are likely to be adaptations to allow for a novel foraging behaviour to additionally capture walking prey within the vicinity of the web. We found only limited evidence for morphological adaptations and suggest that the cave orb spider could act as a model organism for studies of behaviour in energy-poor environments

    Robust storage qubits in ultracold polar molecules

    Quantum states with long-lived coherence are essential for quantum computation, simulation and metrology. The nuclear spin states of ultracold molecules prepared in the singlet rovibrational ground state are an excellent candidate for encoding and storing quantum information. However, it is important to understand all sources of decoherence for these qubits, and then eliminate them, to reach the longest possible coherence times. Here we fully characterize the dominant mechanisms of decoherence for a storage qubit in an optically trapped ultracold gas of RbCs molecules using high-resolution Ramsey spectroscopy. Guided by a detailed understanding of the hyperfine structure of the molecule, we tune the magnetic field to where a pair of hyperfine states have the same magnetic moment. These states form a qubit, which is insensitive to variations in magnetic field. Our experiments reveal a subtle differential tensor light shift between the states, caused by weak mixing of rotational states. We demonstrate how this light shift can be eliminated by setting the angle between the linearly polarized trap light and the applied magnetic field to a magic angle of arccos(1/3–√)≈55∘. This leads to a coherence time exceeding 5.6 s at the 95% confidence level

    Fungal allergic sensitisation in young rural Zimbabwean children: Gut mycobiome and seroreactivity characteristics

    Background The prevalence of allergic diseases has increased over the last few decades, with sensitisation to fungal allergens and gut microbiome dysbiosis implicated in this trend. The fungal community in the gut (mycobiome) has yet to be characterised and related to fungal allergic sensitisation. Thus, we characterised the gut mycobiome and related it to fungal sensitisation and seroreactivity among Zimbabwean children. We further determined the effect of host age, sex, Schistosoma haematobium infection and mycobiome composition on fungal sensitisation and seroreactivity. Methods Using shotgun metagenomic sequencing, we characterised the gut microbiome of stool samples of 116 preschool aged children (PSAC) (≤5 years old, 57(49.1%) male and 59 (50.9%) female). Sensitisation to common fungi in Zimbabwe was assessed using skin prick tests (SPTs). Allergen-specific IgM, IgA, IgG, IgE and IgG4 antibodies were quantified by ELISA. We analysed the relationship between fungal genera and SPT reactivity by ANOVA; fungal genera and IgE antibody reactivity by linear regression; variation in mycobiome abundance with host and environmental factors by PERMANOVA; SPT reactivity and host and environmental factors by logistic regression; seroreactivity and host and environmental factors by ANOVA. Results The mycobiome formed f for, Epicoccum nigrum and Penicillium chrysogenum) and SPT reactivity –related differences in seroreactivity. Conclusion This is the first comprehensive characterisation of gut mycobiome and fungal allergic sensitisation of rural children in Zimbabwe. Although reported allergic disease is low there is a high percentage of sensitisation. Further studies with larger populations are required to understand the role of the mycobiome in allergic diseases
