    Better educational signage could reduce disturbance of resting dolphins

    Spinner dolphins on Hawai‘i Island’s west coast (Stenella longirostris longirostris) rest by day in protected bays that are increasingly popular for recreation. Because more frequent interactions of people with these dolphins is likely to reduce rest for dolphins and to explain recent decline in dolphin abundance, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) proposed stricter rules regarding interactions with spinner dolphins near the main Hawaiian Islands and plans to increase enforcement. Simultaneous investment in public education about both interaction rules and their biological rationale has been and is likely to be relatively low. To test the hypothesis that more educational signage will reduce human-generated disturbance of dolphins, a paper questionnaire was distributed to 351 land-based, mostly unguided visitors at three dolphin resting bays on Hawai‘i Island’s west coast. Responses indicated that visitors wanted to see dolphins, were ignorant of interaction rules, were likely to read signs explaining rules and their biological rationales, and were likely to follow known rules. Therefore, investment in effective educational signage at dolphin resting bays is recommended as one way to support conservation of spinner dolphins on Hawai‘i Island’s west coast and similar sites in the Hawaiian archipelago

    Body mass index and risk of COVID-19 diagnosis, hospitalisation, and death: a cohort study of 2 524 926 Catalans

    Context: A comprehensive understanding of the association between body mass index (BMI) and COVID-19 is still lacking. Objective: To investigate associations between BMI and risk of COVID-19 diagnosis, hospitalisation with COVID-19, and death after a COVID-19 diagnosis or hospitalisation (subsequent death), accounting for potential effect modification by age and sex. Design: Population-based cohort study. Setting: Primary care records covering >80% of the Catalan population, linked to region-wide testing, hospital, and mortality records from March to May 2020. Participants: Adults (≥18 years) with at least one measurement of weight and height. Main outcome measures: Hazard ratios (HR) for each outcome. Results: We included 2 524 926 participants. After 67 days of follow-up, 57 443 individuals were diagnosed with COVID-19, 10 862 were hospitalised with COVID-19, and 2467 had a subsequent death. BMI was positively associated with being diagnosed and hospitalised with COVID-19. Compared to a BMI of 22kg/m2, the HR (95%CI) of a BMI of 31kg/m2 was 1.22 (1.19-1.24) for diagnosis, and 1.88 (1.75-2.03) and 2.01 (1.86-2.18) for hospitalisation without and with a prior outpatient diagnosis, respectively. The association between BMI and subsequent death was J-shaped, with a modestly higher risk of death among individuals with BMIs ≤19kg/m2 and a more pronounced increasing risk for BMIs ≥40kg/m2. The increase in risk for COVID-19 outcomes was particularly pronounced among younger patients. Conclusions: There is a monotonic association between BMI and COVID-19 diagnosis and hospitalisation risks, but a J-shaped one with mortality. More research is needed to unravel the mechanisms underlying these relationships

    Inferring shallow surfaces on sub-neptune exoplanets with JWST

    Planets smaller than Neptune and larger than Earth make up the majority of the discovered exoplanets. Those with H2-rich atmospheres are prime targets for atmospheric characterization. The transition between the two main classes, super-Earths and sub-Neptunes, is not clearly understood as the rocky surface is likely not accessible to observations. Tracking several trace gases (specifically the loss of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN)) has been proposed as a proxy for the presence of a shallow surface. In this work, we revisit the proposed mechanism of nitrogen conversion in detail and find its timescale on the order of a million years. NH3 exhibits dual paths converting to N2 or HCN, depending on the UV radiation of the star and the stage of the system. In addition, methanol (CH3OH) is identified as a robust and complementary proxy for a shallow surface. We follow the fiducial example of K2-18b with a 2D photochemical model on an equatorial plane. We find a fairly uniform composition distribution below 0.1 mbar controlled by the dayside, as a result of slow chemical evolution. NH3 and CH3OH are concluded to be the most unambiguous proxies to infer surfaces on sub-Neptunes in the era of the James Webb Space Telescope

    New Findings What is the topic of this review? The review takes a historical approach to examining where in the body it might be possible to identify the most common cause, or causes, of long-term hypertension. It gathers evidence from histology, human and animal physiology, and computational modelling. The burden of decades of controversy is noted. What advances does it highlight? The review highlights the distinctive pathology of the afferent renal circulation and what its consequences are for the widespread view that essential hypertension is caused by elevated peripheral vascular resistance. Abstract The widely promulgated notion that long-term elevation in mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) can be caused by raised peripheral vascular resistance remains a subject of vigorous debate. According to the 1967 mathematical model of Guyton & Coleman such a causal relationship is impossible, kidney function being the determining factor. We explore this altercation starting with Sir George Johnson's 19th-century renal vascular histological observations in patients with Bright's disease. We note the striking physiological measurements in hypertensives by Gómez and Bolomey in the 1950s, moving on to the mathematical modelling of the circulation from the 1960s up to the ∼100-parameter computer models of the present day. Confusion has been generated by the fact that peripheral resistance is raised in hypertension in close proportion to MAP whilst cardiac output often stays normal, an apparent autoregulation, the mechanism of which is poorly understood. All models allowing for the circulation to be an open system show that isolated changes in peripheral resistance cannot lead to long-term hypertension, but models fail so frequently to account for results from experiments such as salt loading that their credibility with regard to this key finding is compromised. Laboratory animal models of adrenergic renal actions resonate with a contemporary emphasis on the sympathetic nerve supply to the kidney as contributing to the characteristically markedly elevated renal afferent resistance that appears to be the most common cause of hypertension. Remarkably, there remains no account of the way in which the fixed structural changes in vessels observed by Johnson relate to this sympathetic overactivity, which can itself be modified by drugs in the medium term.     Do scalar implicatures prime? The case of exclusive 'or'

    Understanding language requires comprehenders to understand not only what speakers say, but what speakers might imply. Scalar items (e.g. some, numerals) often invite comprehenders to compute scalar implicatures, pragmatically strengthening the semantic meaning of scalar items by negating their stronger alternatives. Recent priming evidence suggests that scalar implicatures may share underlying mechanisms, priming both within and between implicature types. We report two experiments designed to extend these finding to or, which has an inclusive meaning that can be strengthened to an exclusive meaning, potentially via scalar implicature. Experiment 1 investigated or alongside some and numerals, holding the number of visual symbols constant. Experiment 2 reduced the visual complexity of Experiment 1. Both experiments found robust within-category priming, but failed to fully replicate or extend between-category priming effects. We discuss implications of these results with respect to visual manipulations and the potential fragility of priming across different categories of scalar implicature

    Spatiotemporal invasion dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 emergence

    Understanding the causes and consequences of the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern is crucial to pandemic control yet difficult to achieve because they arise in the context of variable human behavior and immunity. We investigated the spatial invasion dynamics of lineage B.1.1.7 by jointly analyzing UK human mobility, virus genomes, and community-based polymerase chain reaction data. We identified a multistage spatial invasion process in which early B.1.1.7 growth rates were associated with mobility and asymmetric lineage export from a dominant source location, enhancing the effects of B.1.1.7’s increased intrinsic transmissibility. We further explored how B.1.1.7 spread was shaped by nonpharmaceutical interventions and spatial variation in previous attack rates. Our findings show that careful accounting of the behavioral and epidemiological context within which variants of concern emerge is necessary to interpret correctly their observed relative growth rates

    Cross-checking SMBH mass estimates in NGC 6958 – I. Stellar dynamics from adaptive optics-assisted MUSE observations

    Supermassive black hole masses (MBH) can dynamically be estimated with various methods and using different kinematic tracers. Different methods have only been cross-checked for a small number of galaxies and often show discrepancies. To understand these discrepancies, detailed cross-comparisons of additional galaxies are needed. We present the first part of our cross-comparison between stellar- and gas-based MBH estimates in the nearby fast-rotating early-type galaxy NGC 6958. The measurements presented here are based on ground-layer adaptive optics-assisted Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) science verification data at around 0′′.6 spatial resolution. The spatial resolution is a key ingredient for the measurement and we provide a Gaussian parametrisation of the adaptive optics-assisted point spread function (PSF) for various wavelengths. From the MUSE data, we extracted the stellar kinematics and constructed dynamical models. Using an axisymmetric Schwarzschild technique, we measured an MBH of (3.6+2.7−2.4)×108M⊙ at 3σ significance taking kinematical and dynamical systematics (e.g. radially-varying mass-to-light ratio) into account. We also added a dark halo, but our data does not allow to constrain the dark matter fraction. Adding dark matter with an abundance matching prior results in a 25 per cent more massive black hole. Jeans anisotropic models return MBH of (4.6+2.5−2.7)×108M⊙ and (8.6+0.8−0.8)×108M⊙ at 3σ confidence for spherical and cylindrical alignment of the velocity ellipsoid, respectively. In a follow-up study, we will compare the stellar-based MBH with those from cold and warm gas tracers, which will provide additional constraints for the MBH for NGC 6958, and insights into assumptions that lead to potential systematic uncertainty

    Zap-Pano: a photocaged prodrug of the KDAC inhibitor panobinostat

    We report the synthesis and biological evaluation of a light-activated (caged) prodrug of the KDAC inhibitor panobinostat (Zap-Pano). We demonstrate that addition of the 4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzyl group to the hydroxamic acid oxygen results in an inactive prodrug. In two cancer cell lines we show that photolysis of this compound releases panobinostat and an unexpected carboxamide analogue of panobinostat. Photolysis of Zap-Pano causes an increase in H3K9Ac and H3K18Ac, consistent with KDAC inhibition, in an oesophageal cancer cell line (OE21). Irradiation of OE21 cells in the presence of Zap-Pano results in apoptotic cell death. This compound is a useful research tool, allowing spatial and temporal control over release of panobinostat
